nah i doubt arturo was trying to blow away dizz...especially considering dizzy was his teacher...my guess is dizz is just chillin...sitting back enjoying how his hard work payed off through arturo as a parent would when they see their child become successful...
Dizzy had been a legend in his own time for 40+ years at this point. I think he’s more than happy to give Sando more spotlight to make a legend out of him as well.
I was there and saw this live. This was to me the highlight of the entire concert and in no way does Arturo try to blow away Dizzy - it’s massively disrespectful to say that. I saw this band twice in the UK, once here in London and then next year in Bristol. Both times they were absolutely amazing and undoubtedly the best big band gigs I’ve ever been too.
Dizzy was in his day an amazing trumpet player but into his 70’s his chops just gave way I mean we all know you are not supposed to puff your cheeks out but for years it worked for him!!
1. Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet Claudio Roditi - trumpet Arturo Sandoval - trumpet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet Slide Hampton - trombone Steve Turre - bass trombone Paquito D'Rivera - alto saxophone, clarinet James Moody - alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute Mario Rivera - tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone John Lee - bass guitar Ed Cherry - guitar Danilo Perez - piano Flora Purim - vocals Ignacio Berroa - drums Airto Moreira - percussion Giovanni Hidalgo - percussion, congas 2. jazz fusion/afro-cuban 3. 32 bar popular song form 4. I really like the duet of two great trumpet players but also the cuban groove was really smooth and Arturo is a phenomenal trumpet player.
This live performance is my all-time favorite trumpet 🎺 playing of Arturo Sandoval. He was surely at his best here! In all his solos he pretty much played interesting jazz phrasing, blazing fast and Cuban music (My fav solo part is so majestic: @6 21min). And also that last double High G at the end caught me by surprise when I first heard it 😅 Well granted Dizzy wasn't at his best but who cares! He s a legend and inspiration to all of us jazz musicians and non-musicians alike.
both great players, this is what jazz is alla bout. look at um messin with eachother havin a great time. naw this is just good fun for sure, both incredible trumpet players.
Sandoval is definitely a great trumpet player, but the language he is using comes directly from Dizzy Gillespie, so there really is no point in comparing the two. If Sandoval was playing something that came entirely from him, then that would be different. In a way, it's like a complinent to Dizzy.
holygroove2 so true. I first heard this on the radio and they named the artists as "Dizzy Gillespie with the UN Jazz Band" and I thought Arturo was Dizzy.
I agree. Even now, his language is derived from Diz...his articulation is just deeper. Arturo told me most of his vocal came from that and Clarke’s (met him long ago)
Always thought Athuro blew dizzy off. Now retrospectively watching back years latter realise Dizzy was letting his student express himself like a father.
Tin Tin Deo is the tune. this band was smoking good! moddy on sax claudio roditi on trumpet as well and so many more. I saw them live oh what a treat! Elliot
@LoveSRN I´d like to agree. But just look into their faces and listen how the phrases follow to each other. then you should agree that Arturo turns the whole show into a competition.
Back in 1947 in NY during a Jazz Fest. he placed his trumpet in the floor trumpet holder and stept on it and bent it up, the show has to continue so he has no choice than keep plying the trumpet like that, then he became famous with his bent trumpet...........
@@BopWalk Sat on as somebody fell over while it was sitting on a chair. Also Dizzy tells another story to the Cubans in 1977 on his visit about a maffioso annoyed at him for mistakenly pointing his horn at him on stage. The gangster supposedly handed him a $1000 dollars then took his horn and bent the bell, lol. It's on the DVD "A Night in Havana". heh.
Arturo Sandoval learned from the best of the best. Dizzie lives on in everything Arturo plays, it's a shame people don't care about REAL music anymore. The fake pop shit is nothing. It's a simple cord progression with words, big deal. This and everything that Arturo does is art.
No me pegues
I *love* dizzy, but by this time he was a shadow of his former greatness. I'll say it, his playing here is not very good. This is a great document thanks for sharing it.
The first time I heard this, it was on the radio, and I thought Arturo was Dizzy because they didn't name him as one of the artists. I thought it was Dizzy and some crappy trumpet player they had with the UN Jazz Band... you're very right, his playing is nowhere near what it was in his younger years
Well looks like Dizzy didn't mind, in fact he seems really enjoyed the featuring. Plus I think it's his genuine play, not that Sandoval tried to blow away his mentor or so
He wasn’t trying to diss him or blow him away. Dizzy was his teacher. They were having fun That’s also why I think at 6:01 why Aurturo looked shocked rather than rub it in Also at 6:04 he kind of does an “I’m sorry pose”
