Judging by the comments, some of you don't understand or respect the spirit of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Rolling is an experience that is for all ages, builds, levels of experience etc. Each session tells a story the way I look at it.. Here we have a 6'2 inch, long limbed, mma star with a black belt in jiu jitsu against a much physically shorter and smaller man who is at least 20 years older...but who is one of the brilliant BJJ masters and foundational competitor. To me the outcome that matters is not the outcome (who taps who) but just being able to see the moves and counters and both men displayed real mastery in their roll. Very efficient motion and technique on both sides. Silva really taught me a few things about removing the hooks that Riva attacked Silva with while Silva was trying to pass guard. Silva is very good at jiu jitsu.

That looked like pure play to me. There wasn't tensed muscle in sight. It was just an old master and a respectful young(-ish) gun having some lighthearted fun. My understanding is that RDLR is more of a technical pioneer than a competitive powerhouse anyway. Silva's hamming shows that it wasn't remotely a serious encounter.

Some of you are reading way too much into the video...neither one was trying hard at all...and there is certainly nothing that De La Riva needs to do to make Anderson look good..Silva's skills are legit, and he doesn't need the assistance of anyone during a roll to make him look good...Get a clue please...
@greysaku

I find the title to your video misleading and disrespectful. You are staining a Legends reputation for more views. That action shows your character. First, of all they where not rolling. Second Master De La Riva was helping Anderson warm up. Third it was clear Anderson was joking with his reaction. I say this not being disrespectful, just stating the facts.

+Tony Shorting They are doing what is called a 50/50 roll. You don't go full out. What you do is practice the movements and technique. It's really helpful when you want to learn a series of moves or as you get older. The cool thing about BJJ is each move, can move in to another move. You can lead someone down a path of no return, where every movement they make you already know and they only have that move and it leads to their submission. It's human chess. In order to chain moves together, the 50/50 helps you learn and it's also a cool way to spar with someone... you get injured way less and as you get older and it prevents injuries. You don't always have to go all out young buck :)
@respeezy
@respeezy 8 лет назад
+Robert C. Christian 50/50 roll you made that up ? lol
@rcchristian2
@rcchristian2 8 лет назад
respeezy No, it's what we do in higher levels of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Most do it without speaking... I don't know what others call it, but that's the term I use and many higher levels do it. I'm a purple belt going for brown and we do it all the time. The better you get, it seems the less strength/quickness you tend to use and the more technique you practice. You also put yourself in worse positions to see if you can survive and thrive.

This is how i want to learn jui jitsu. I hate sparring as as a white belt and even blue belt i wouldn't want to spar at that level. I never see people spar like this using barley any strength. It is so unenjoyable to spar when someone uses 40 percent of their strength.
@kivsa85
@kivsa85 7 лет назад
In Muay Thai we call it "Light Sparring", We should call it Light Rolling in BJJ
@marceljones3393
@marceljones3393 7 лет назад
I've dislocated my thumb, separated both shoulders and almost blew out my knee within 10 classes. Sparring hard from a non experience aspect is pointless, for not only technical reasons but aswell as injury from lack of knowledge on positioning. martial art w/ rules n a controlled environment isn't realistic, it has absolutely nothing to do with being soft. After a horrible start , i decided to train myself by watching from the bench. And after 5 months of watching and studying from youtube, I came back and shocked people. Some would ask "You should actually be a blue belt." I only got 26 classes in?!?! It has nothing to do with being weaker, pride is a problem. I laughed a couple weeks ago when this 230 pound dude actually thought he could scramble with my instructor, not only did he fail within seconds but the guy got hurt in the process - since he had no clue about positioning. Sparring is the main cause of quitters at the early stage , because too many injuries occur within a month. It's about being smart with your time. Not everyone wants to train for street or tournaments. I'm not against hard sparring but to make it a habit is rediculous. This one guy in the class is known for sparring hard and thats the reason he's made little improvement since i last sparred with him coming off my hiatus.

Who is Renato Laranja? I can't find one of his actual fights. I can only find videos where he sets up encounters with a camera to confront famous people, and on MMA shows that I've never heard of. Most people he challenges are close to twice his age. I'm sure he's a great BJJ fighter but where can I see the fights instead of obvious self promotion of him confronting his elders. Does anyone have any links to his fights or know where to get them. On RU-vid all I see are staged confrontations and encounters at events. I want to see actual fights against people in his weight class.

For all the noobs in the comment section, I mean no disrespect ; firstly this is training in which a fighter mostly tries to master and enhance his techniques, and what they are doing is as if they are rehearsing if that makes sense to you. We even do in Judo, sometimes when wrestling with the Sensei, if one demonstrates a good maneuver of a technique, according to your level wether it was high or low, the Sensei will let you complete it. If this was a real fight Mr.Silva would probably leave with a broken arm. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's called "Flow Rolling" I'm not even going to read the comments because I can already guess how arrogant some people can be. Flow rolling means sparring with a flow, never staying in one position for to long just continuously moving. So pretty much it means submissions mean nothing in flow rolling, most of the time people will let you get the submission instead of fully fighting because the Flow roll is supposed to benefit both of the people. If you train BJJ you would know this
