Andre Previn was a great musician and the classic and the jazz music!

I love Previn's quasi 50s jazz musician's demeanor. No forced movements of the head to emphasise a sforzando, no painful grimaces to demonstrate deep feeling. The only thing missing when he's conducting is a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.

The best interpretation of K 491. I have the DVD (not even yet blue ray version) of this concert, but the sound is acceptable. And is my favorite

The larghetto of this concerto is my favorite. I remember hearing it for the first time while driving. I became paralyzed with wonder and had to pull off to the side of the road and listen. It should be illegal to play this on the radio. It can lead to DUI......

This was always one of Previn's specialties. He was as deft at playing and conducting as was his good friend, Vladimir Ashkenazy who he taught to conduct. During the record they made of the Rachmaninoff concerto cycle, Ashkenazy had expressed to Previn his desire to learn how to conduct and Previn said, "It's actually pretty simple. All you do is get up there a wave a little stick in a beat pattern. But you must have the orchestra's full confidence in you if you are to succeed." The rest is history.

Isn't Previn's observation succinct? And he would know. Just wave a stick and beat time - but- that bit about needing the full confidence of the orchestra? Well now that's slightly more difficult ....
