Aside from the "Rock 'N Roll" tennis commercials featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Guerilla Tennis" is probably the most popular among Agassi fans. "Guerilla Tennis" was actually a 10-15 minute segment shown during the 1995 U.S. Open by CBS. Nike aired a commerical featuring both Andre and Pete playing on what was meant to resemble a NY city street - and was dubbed "Guerilla Tennis." Two versions of this commercial aired: a short version, and a long version. This is the long version. This and other Nike/Agassi commercials can be found (in much higher quality) at tennislegendondvd.com

I was an extra in this commercial as a kid (little preppy guy in the letterman jacket, left side, half of me chopped off, for like 2 frames at 0:46)! 🤣 They shot this at the intersection of Pine and Sansome in SF, and this tiny little one-minute thing was a full 8 hour day. I and about a dozen other kids were brought in toward the beginning of the shoot and told they weren’t ready for us yet, so they plunked us in an alley up Pine St., brought us lunch, and then forgot about us for about 6 hours. Some PA must have remembered, and they brought us out at the *very* end and put us in the crowd. It was cool! The money Nike dropped on this commercial had to have been insane. They shut down 4 square blocks of the SF financial district for a full day for this!

1995: Guerrilla Tennis = edgy and cool, used to promote the sport, etc. 2017: Merely saying "guerrilla" tennis = gets you fired

No kidding. ESPN should be ashamed. I hope Doug Alder wins his lawsuit against ESPN. It was ESPN that turned it into a racist comment. Jack Waynes!!

I think there is plenty of evidence out there to ensure that Adler wins this suit. Without much time and effort researching this, ESPN could have gotten to the bottom of it all without ever firing him.

I wouldn't want to work for ESPN. They don't stand up for their employees.

One of Agassi's best outfits ever. I still have the entire set. Those black/dark teal LWPs, the shorts (they still fit) and the shirt AND most importantly the "Tennis Sucks" skull & cross racquets hat. Such a unique and awesome look.

The teal/black LWPs, to this day, are still my favorite Nike tennis sneakers. They were perfect.
@06VistaBlueGT1

@@TheMrFett they were ALMOST perfect. The upper wore way too fast as it was a durabuck material. I wore my pair my senior year on my HS tennis team. Bought a 2nd pair years later on eBay and those I still wear. I'd freak if they actually did a retro.

In Agassi's book, he says this commercial was shot in San Francisco, not NY.

Andre did say that.....and it was during an Longines event that auctioned off a few very limited edition watches. There was a link at the Men's Tennis Forums that showed the video of it.

by far this is the best tennis commercial ever. they should do something with Fed and Rafa. though they're much less marketable since they're not american

Fed only lost to Nadal on Clay when he was in his prime. His prime was 04,05,06 Sampras Agassi, Borg, McEnroe, Laver, Kramer, Navratilova, BJ King and Nadal himself have all said Federer is the GOAT. And i doubt agassi said that considering his excitement when fed won the French. Can you provide a link? i wanna read it.

The sport of tennis was marketed a lot better in the 90s than it is today, had more charismatic players than today, and the depth of talent was considerably better too. Had Federer played in the 90s, he wouldn't have half the Grand Slams he has today. And players like Davydenko wouldn't have even seen the top 15. Furthermore, there were so many contrasting styles of play in the 80s and the 90s - - each well represented by a number of incredibly talented players.

@TheMrFett youre actually right about that weaker generation. at least in his first successful years with ppl like roddick being the greatest adversaries lol. but its hardly his fault that no one else was able to make the transition to the modern day tennis as well as he did. hes the only one i could see playing successful today and 20 years ago cause he mastered everything. does that not make him the greatest after all?

Agassi would have had just as many grand slams as Federer if it wasn't for Sampras. Sampras would have had twice as many grand slams if it wasn't for Agassi. I think that if Federer was thrown in the mix he wouldn't have anymore than 5 grand slams

Agassi was half assing it for most of his early career. The moment he started focusing on training he became unstoppable.

@TheMrFett Yeah, 'cause Philipoussis to have an example was much better than guys nowadays. A guy that nowadays is broke, and back then was only serve and volley, like Roddick is. Where's Roddick nowadays with the one of the most poweful serves in HISTORY? Where's Karlovic? Those guys back in the days would have been supermegastars. Luckily, nowadays, people have enough skills to know how to answer an amazingly fast serve.

When Federer was in his prime, he still lost to Nadal. Agassi retracted his statement about Fed being the best, adding something to the effect that "How can someone be called the greatest of all time when there is someone who 'owns' them?" Referring to Rafa of course. Also, Laver never said in clear terms that Roger was the greatest either. Again, Roger benefitted from a very weak generation of tennis players. No one with any knowlege of tennis history would deny that.

It's funny to come across this video after reading Spike Jonze's wiki and hearing people talk about Fed and Raf's prime...When they continued to dominate tennis until present time along with Joker.

They were both Americans. And some guys wonder about why they were more commercially appealing. THEY WERE FROM THE FUCKING USA! Federer is Swiss and Nadal is Spanish!!!!! DO YOU NEED A MAP? Being American, I'm sure you do.

"We don't actually know what was in his heart" Sure we do, I heard him interviewed and he's used the term many times in the past.......JUST LOOK AT THE ABOVE VIDEO......it's the whole point of the topic "Guerrilla Tennis" was a freaking ad campaign damn it. BUT, the reality is some people have the "privilege" of having their entire career destroyed because somebody had their feelings hurt .......NOT THAT THE PERSON DID ANYTHING WRONG.....but because some precious little snow flake sees a racist under every rock. This insanity must stop, it's destroying the country. edit: "I've never in my time on earth been called racist or homophobic, sexist, or any other label" How about stupid?
@singingchef23

therealthreadkilla and 1 final point, the man got himself fired, just imagine with all those amazing words in the English language at his disposal he could have simply said else. Whether he meant Gorilla or Guerilla, a smarter person would have greater depth on knowledge and linguistics to simply avoid insertion of one's foot in mouth. You know, like when your at home with your wife and you pause before you say exactly what's on your mind because you have the common sense to not tip the apple cart in the event she does not take things as intended. Effective communication is one hell of a skill and I can think of countless broadcasters and announcers who have never stumbled upon the issue. so your posing this as if this is a majority when in fact logically it's not, it happened once by one person.
@therealthreadkilla

You seem to be doubling down on "maybe he really wanted to call her n***er" live on TV and ruin his entire life in the process and I think that's stupid. I know it's hard for some snowflakes to realize this but not everyone that is white is racist........and i can guarantee you with out a shadow of a doubt he didn't want to call her that AND he didn't want to lose his job because some one like you thinks otherwise. HE DIDN'T get himself fired, some triggered moron who's looking to cash in did. And i'll leave you with a quote from a man much smarter than most of us. “There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs - partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.” ― Booker T. Washington
