Wish I got to see more of Agassi. Only saw a few Wimbledon matches of his before I really got into Tennis. Absolute Legend.

I feel super fortunate that I started watching tennis during the Sampras/Agassi era and then came of age during the era of the Big 3. Feel very lucky. There are generations of people who never got to see Sampras/Agassi and there will be generations of people who never got to see the Big 3. Pat Rafter is a really underrated player too. It sucks that he never won a Wimbledon title, but he also retired pretty young

Wow, that's a very thoughtful, nuanced commentary... amazing that Andre still remembers these fine details...

If this was back in the 50’s and 60’s Rafter would probably be dominating with his serve and volley style that was so prevalent back in those days. Rafter was an anomaly. Playing old school tennis in the modern day , which works against serve and volley players. It’s so hard to win now as a pure serve and volley player. As for Agassi , he gave great respect to Pat. He and Pat class acts. and Pat both

One moment I remember about Andre is in the french open final against Medvedev. Andre was getting crushed in the 1st 2 sets and it looked ugly. Andre came back and took the trophy. He was a fighter.

I have this match on DVD; for me, it WAS the final match of the men's singles tournament that year in Melbourne, as the final featuring Andre and Arnaud Clement was something of an anti-climax after the semi shown here, with the defending champion matching up against the Aussie's native son. I like the way Andre expressed his head-to-head against Patrick, the clash of styles across all of the surfaces (I think they played once or twice on clay). Sampras was Agassi's chief competitor of course, and while Pat's and Pete's styles were similar, several players have said that Sampras could literally take the racquet out of their hands, his serve being more powerful, volley's more crisp, and movement more effective than Rafter's on most occasions.

Agassi and Becker said Sampras could give them the feeling of zero hope-they knew the match was pretty much over if Sampras was playing well.

Maybe it would lose to Novak's in a straight fight - but it was about as beautiful as a double-hander could be. So, yes, I agree with you.

Patrick Rafter sort of reminds me of Keanu Reeves. If the latter were a tennis player he'd be just like Patrick Rafter.
@JiraiyaSama86
@JiraiyaSama86 2 года назад
I guessed right. It was consistent with what I've heard him say before. With Pete, you never know what version of him you'll get. But Pat, it's an open book, and they both get to duke it out.
@farid1406
@farid1406 Год назад
Pete typically played his best against Andre. The reason he troubled Andre is he's a much better player than Rafter and his style is also very disruptive. He would tank most return games, then suddenly decide he wanted to break and Agassi would be helpless since he hadn't had a decent rally in his service games the entire set and had built up no rhythm. There's a really great series on Pete's career where Agassi talks about this in more depth.
@JiraiyaSama86
@JiraiyaSama86 Год назад
@@farid1406 I can definitely agree that Pete is much more disruptive as a player. Better or not depends on the criteria being used.

Pete's serve was unreturnable if on (like in Wimbledon'99), and at that point there was nothing Andre (in fact, anybody) could do. The match was then completely one-sided and boring (not Pete's fault, of course). With Pat it was always an open-book kind of match, practically Pat served to volley, not to ace. Then Andre's passing kicks in.
@ciaronsmith4995
@ciaronsmith4995 Год назад
Not really. It was more Agassi liked a lot of shots to get warmed up and Pete ended points early through his playing style.
@cloudman8911

Agassi played like crap in that match. Peter didn t break Agassi with his serve. Agassi was playing like shit from the baseline. Novak or Roger would have destroyed Sampras.

Sampras is one dimensional Hewitt humiliated him - Andre was not the best at passing shots - otherwise Sampras wins much less Andre was more complete anyways

It would have been quite something for a player to admit that the most enjoyable opponent was one against whom he had a losing record.
