Would those techniques work if you were fighting Mark Hunt? My guess is probably not. In case you don't know who Mark Hunt is he's a Samoan K1 fighter from Auckland, New Zealand. He's 178cm and 125kg.

Any thing you train wouldn’t work against mark hunt unless you have the same size power and build

well im glad somebody is ''saving'' karate... it has become so much watered down in western parts, it is losing its reputation fast. many are considering it a joke and i cant really blame them. if i didnt come across ppl like mr bertel i would be in doubt if there ever was any deeper skill in art of karate

+Chokwe RU-vid is a nice tool, but serious training in Japan is not so cooperative. Rick Hotton is a dancer not a karateka. He has no freestyle credentials. He talks a lot and copies the movements of sensei in Japan he has never trained with, including myself, yet he doesn't realize that the techniques he is copying are actually things we can use: our tokuiwaza. I am sure he is a nice person, but he is an artist not a martial artist.

+Andre Bertel have you met and trained with him? If not, how can you make those claims about the man? You appear more aggressive and athletic in your seminars, to be sure, but his technique looks quite sound, too, and his moves have visible power (though I haven't met him in person and would never presume to pass judgment on them, either pro or con, absent that sort of experience -- at least as far as the effectiveness of his obviously sharp technique). Anyway, wouldn't it be more civil not to badmouth the guy on the Internet? He's got a following, as you do, and both of you appear to me to deserve that attention. (For the record I've been quite impressed with your approach to Shotokan since stumbling onto your RU-vid videos online, but his are no less impressive though he doesn't go in for the dramatic techniques as much as you do in his web-broadcast videos as far as I can see.)

+Stuart Mirsky I received a reply by email from "Chokwe" asserting that the individual who apparently badmouthed Rick Hotton here was not Andre Bertel, the author and subject of this RU-vid link, but someone using his name via a false account. I don't know if that's true but if it is it's gratifying to know Mr. Bertel is not given to such disparaging remarks of other accomplished karateka. I tried to reply by e-mail to Chokwe but for some reason my reply would not go through. So for the record here is Chokwe's explanation to me and my reply: "The person who replied to that comment of mine isn't the real Bertel sensei. He just has the same usernam on RU-vid (I habe no idea how he's gotten in though) but he has no visible videos of himself on his channel. I did a little search and have seen multiple users with the exactly same 'Andre Bertel' name and a totally empty channel. (The real one makes new videos regularly, has a profile picture and doesn't neglect or bash any comment he gets the way this guy did." My response: Interesting and good to know. I was kind of troubled to see a kareteka with the obvious skills and knowledge of Rick Hotton bad-mouthed in the way Andre Bertel had seemed to be doing. It strikes me that, while Hotton is older and less athletic in his demonstrations, he is equally skilled in the fundamentals of Shotokan karate and no less deserving of respect for that. Perhaps Mr. Bertel should, himself, publicly recant such remarks falsely attributed to him and contact the RU-vid folks to find out who has assumed his identity online, and move to shut that down? I'm sure it can be done. Both he and Hotton deserve better.

@@StuartMirsky Good you cleared that up but it was almost obivously that a skilled guy like Berthel cant see and appreciate the high skill of Hotton.

You should have more sense and maturity to not make such a statement! Good for him if that's true! Do you realise that's actually ideal? That should be the goal of all martial artists as well as everyone else; to avoid such situations at all costs. Traditionally karate was never about: fighting for fighting sake, entertaining a crowd, or for thinking about who you can or cannot beat (pride or ego), using it to intentionally hurt others/seek violence. Traditionally there is a spirituality and morality to be a karateka in which one trains their body, mind, builds good character and discipline. You learn about ways to be your own personal bodyguard or be one for others but hope that you never have to actually use it. Karate when used for self defence is really about keeping distance or as a last resort bare knuckle striking with enough precision, power and speed each time and perhaps taking down an opponent without committing to grappling so that you can escape violence at soon as possible; 'street fighting' which is confused with self protection is not the same, one is consensual the other isn't!

+Poke Man I used to sit back and go along with a lot of things in life and not say anything and also not question anything that I naturally found suspect in day to day life - but with the level of injustice in the world and the MA community I think its better to start saying something and start making a difference in empowering yourself and also others. Kowtowing and just going along because thats the way I / you were taught doesnt do anyone any good. Make sure you question your MA teachers / superiors at work, you owe it to yourself and them ok I hope I have given you something to strive for and to think about. No insult intended. OSS

good point, I have done both modern style of martial arts as well as old school styles. I Can surprise fellow modern martial artists with older moves, and out last and fight old school fellow martial artist because of fighting experience in newer more modern styles. Its all on how you train.
