Karate Interview with Andre Bertel - personal student of Tetsuhiko Asai (10.Dan)

In this interview Andre Bertel gives us a rare insight into the training with his mentor, the late Karate legend Tetsuhiko Asai Shihan (10th Dan). He also reveals some of the key aspects of Asai-ha Shotokan-ryu Karate and emphasizes the importance of training for real self-defense instead of focusing only on performance and winning competitions.
This interview was conducted with Andre during his visit to Germany early 2012. It was a rather spontaneous idea and is more or less improvised. From a technical point of view the result is far from being professional. Maybe next time I will get a chance to acquire proper studio lighting and microphones. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the video and get something useful out of it for your own Karate studies.
Last but not least, domo arigato gozaimasu Andre sensei!
OSU,
Oliver

Clearly he has trained hard and studied diligently at his art for many years. This is to be appreciated and admired. He is highly skilled in his art, enjoys passing that knowledge on to others and people seek him out for his knowledge and enthusiasm. That makes him a special person.

Thanks for all the messages & for the mention about the chart forum `having a go' at me (via this interview). The reality is that I talk with my karate.When teaching full time at the NZ Honbu dojo I used to engage in karate forums during my rest periods (between teaching & training). It was a learning curve as I realised 99% of the people in karate forums lack the physcial side of karate & have false confidence. Funnily, the people in this forum (YEARS LATER) include many of the same dreamers.

Andre Bertel Hello sensei, thank you for your reply. I found it funny too, that someone with the same name, as yours, answer on my comment.But I have known, that it was not you, who did this reply. LOLI believe, in the world wide web will always strange things happen, and not all are just fun.Sensei, I have seen a video recently form a seminar from Krefeld in Germany. In this you wear a bandage on your right hand. What is happen and is now everything all right, again?

Videos such as these and the Rick Hotton ones are a godsend to karateka such as myself. I live in a remote area in the North of Scotland and so do not have regular access to high level tuition. I travel to train as often as possible with Sensei Kawasoe, and am honoured to have been awarded godan in 2015. I will continue to do so but will also reference these videos and study the content so that I can incorporate into my own classes to supplement my own teaching. I do of course realise that there is no substitute for first hand tuition, but I believe that having an open mind is at least a start, and this has got me thinking anew about the application of kihon. Hopefully I`ll be able to travel more now that I have retired from full time employment to train with sesei and also with my good friends in the South. I would be interested to hear from others in a similar location to myself and how they address this. Thank you for this Andre. Osu!

Many things I learned in Special Forces Q and Ranger school were VERY similar to what Bertel is doing here. I have those applied to traditional TKD-and many of the most effective, not terribly flashy (but performed very fast and violently) techniques are frowned upon... I often get ‘Jesus you could kill someone with that’. Well, this is for self defense. If someone takes a swing at you, or presents with a knife or gun in close proximity, ask yourself - what do you think they intend toward you?

I lived in Japan for ten years and trained full time. undertook a instructors course under Kanazawa Hirokazu Soke, I am currently a Japan graded 8th Dan. Asai Shihan taught many students over his long career. No Japanese Shotokan Master had " personal students " but taught many students in Japan and overseas. I could very easily say that during my ten years in Japan I was a personal student of Abe Keigo Shihan and Kanazawa Hirokazu Soke, yes to the uneducated in Japanese Karate culture they would believe this but it is far from true. " The greatest test in Karate do is to conquer the enemy within not the one standing in front of you ". In Karate Do there is no room for Ego and self praise but humility and respect.

So this guy has got to be in his mid forties at the youngest if he was training as a young man in 93 and he looks like he's 18 years old. Clean living. I'm 30 and feels like I'm 60 sometimes. Getting real back into martial arts in the last few months and feeling real good. Rebuilding my legs after several knee injuries. I've spent a lot of years beating the shit out of my body through extreme careless living. I will become strong again. You're an inspiration sensei. I don't believe anything can match the explosiveness of perfected karate-do. I trained shotokan for years and want to get back to it. Right now I am focused on wing chun and hung gar. I believe where karate is explosive and powerful the Chinese arts are more about fluidity and I feel that is more what my body needs now. Happy training everyone. Amituofo!

Q1: any comment of karate in comparison to MMA, karate rarely goes to ground and the attack is usually straight line , boxing for example has evasions, slips and angles I did not see that in karate? Q2: I see many people doing fist and knuckle conditioning..would you recommend it and why ?
@xGarrettThiefx
@xGarrettThiefx 8 лет назад
+savcob 1) They rarely go to ground because it is not part of the JKA syllabus and the JKA view on ground fighting is that it does not exist and is generally frowned upon i.e. it is not honorable and only "animals" roll on the floor as I was once told. There are no head slips as well - it is very easy to punch a karateka in the face as they don't have an understanding of breaking the "head" line and refuse to bring anything new into the syllabus. 2) The art of karate is generally good for the body but after a while the repetitive movements will cause degenerative wear and tear on the body and joints after long term training. I hope this helps.
@CorporaMedicina
@CorporaMedicina 8 лет назад
+xGarrettThiefx Yes thank you..we are on the same page. I spent time in Shotokan but my view has changed as I switched to boxing..2 different worlds. I would add also that boxing in real life (shocking) does not work exactly the same way as on the ring. Gloves force you to punch harder..you punch like that with bare fist and it will brake. I also take classes in classical bare-knuckle pugilism..and man is that a different world. the punches are not strong at all but devastating ..for example : left jab from orthodox stance in pugulism is done with thumb facing upward like Tate Tsuki..or even the thumb rotated to the left with palm facing up..you hit with the knuckles.. :-)
@xGarrettThiefx
@xGarrettThiefx 8 лет назад
+savcob I agree with your comments - I would like to to go so far as to say that Karate is a joke, the Karate community is more interested in kowtowing to higher dan grades, that also don't know how to fight, which in turn propagates this constant cycle of regurgitated false bullshit for hundreds of years. I have had a very close look at the so called masters and could tell you that there is a very good chance that they would fall apart in a confrontation - don't let those flashy "woosh woosh" sounds deceive you ok - they are just not that fast without a gi on ! I went from Karate to Boxing / Muay Thai and am aware of the discrepancy between wearing gloves and bare knuckle, I recently had a ex-scottish commando tell me that you should roll the punch over so that the thumb is pointing downwards to prevent damage and for maximising the cork-screw action of the punch. I found his take of this punching action very interesting to be honest.
@CorporaMedicina
@CorporaMedicina 8 лет назад
xGarrettThiefx absolutely the reverse with thumb down is more challenging..at least for me on the heavy bag..palm facing up is easier. I always think that the simpler the art the better. Boxing has only 8 attacks..it does not get any simpler than that.. :-)

I am 6 Dan (student of Master Shirai) and MMA instructor. Bertell's technique is impressive, but does it really work in REALITY? Here we only see an exhibition where Bertell shows his excellent athletic qualities. Attackers do not really attack and therefore ARE NOT true ATTACKERS. These are violent, unpredictable, do not stop when they take hits, etc. Here instead we see pupils who, full of fear and respect, allow themselves to be done by the Master.
@lorismarchitelli5274
@lorismarchitelli5274 2 года назад
This is a really good point, but yet... how do you train in a full contact live resistent situation a technique like the fish hook were you actually poke eyes or hit the neck?
@shotokar4211
@shotokar4211 2 года назад
@@lorismarchitelli5274 There are many ways to train under stress. If for example (stress in the distance) an opponent tries to get close to hit then you can stand with your back against the wall at a distance of one meter or less and let many shots be fired (slowly more and more realistic) for 3 minutes. The purpose of such workouts is (paradoxically) to SOME WAY EXTEND THE DIFFICULTY of the real situation. If I DON'T like something about reality, not even for a second, then I train this thing for 10,000 Seconds. Hitting in the neck or eyes can be trained, with the partner only slowly and with a lot of control. But while the body uses a lot of control the will and the mind have to "cross" the target. Hitting hard is obviously only possible with special tools or protections.

This kind of static karate is obsolete. And not functional. All the techniques he shows are on a real attacker, just on a a cooperating one. This only leaves an illusion to the viewer that the techniques work. Try these on some real martial artists and see if they work.
