Andrew Huberman's weight loss diet.
I was tagged in this video of Andrew Huberman saying if you want to lose weight, "you can eat meat, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables... if it is not in that list, you are not eating it".
I think this serves as a very useful lesson.
What is being described is actually very similar to a paleo (caveman) diet, with the further removal of nuts and seeds.
In short, you can ONLY eat meat, fish, eggs, fruits and vegetables.
And it can work. There are numerous research papers showing that people who follow a paleo diet will often 1) lose weight 2) improve their health markers.
And this can happen even when people are NOT given calorie goals. They just naturally consume fewer calories by the prescription of food choice. They are prioritising nutritious foods that are good for appetite regulation (on average) and also eliminating all ultra-processed foods which are worse for appetite regulation (on average). This obviously sounds great.
But there is a flip side. This diet has also been criticised for being 1) unnecessarily rigid (especially with the removal of dairy, grains and legumes, let alone STRICT avoidance of everything else) 2) unnecessarily expensive 3) difficult to adhere to in the long term.
For example, a mere 4-week feasibility study described it as possibly being impractical for use in clinical and public health settings.
So I think this is a good lesson for you which you can apply to any dietary approach you like.
Focusing on food quality can be great.
But sometimes it goes too far, and if a diet is so strict that is it difficult to stick to long term, it might not be a smart idea for you to follow it.
Does that make sense?

Some people need interventions. Some people have short term goals. I see nothing wrong with this diet, even if you don’t adhere to it, it’s foods you can always eat. If you use this as a foundation, this could work easily!

I think prioritizing protein is helpful. Once you have a general calorie goal, focus on getting enough protein to minimize muscle loss and the rest falls in place to fill in the gaps.

. . . I don't care who's poop the popsicle is flavored after . . . I ain't eating it.😁 But, agreed, effective and results doesn't equal sustainable or practical.

I have to know, when did fish stop being meat? and are they a special plant or something totally different?

Thanks for saying this. Ofc in the comments are still people that know better when it's just anecdotal evidence.

As far as diets go, this doesn't sound too restrictive to me. I think the main reason for failure and quitting diets and/or exercise is because people get told that some method is going to make weight loss quick and easy. That's bullshit, and I think people are better served by being told that weight loss is hard, damn hard, and slow. They should not expect to see results even from week to week despite diet and exercise. If they're not mentally prepared for that kind of disappointment despite all their struggles they're going to be more likely to give up. You have to be mentally tough, stick with it and not give up, and be willing to do the hard work even when it feels like you're achieving nothing.

Said the random guy on the internet who probably doesn't have any chronic illnesses/disabilities, kids and/or family who needs to be looked after and has the necessary money to follow a certain diet. For many of us it takes all the strength and mental toughness just to get through the day and it's high time all you self-proclaimed fitness gurus acknowledged your privilege. I'd even take a wild guess and say half of you don't have near enough *whateveritisyouclaimiskeyforyourfitness* to manage even one week outside of your privileged lifestyles.

@@janes2180 so you think you'd be better off being told that some diet is going to make weight loss easy for you? I have a young stepson and baby daughter, I find the time to exercise and force myself to do it even when I don't want to. I have barely any free time with these two kids and work, especially as they've been home for summer holidays. As for disabilities I don't think I really have any, though I am on the spectrum, so social interactions can be a pain in the arse, but I don't really think it limits me in any ways that I give a damn about. I try my best to not make excuses.

This one sounds like you can meet nutrient goals. Cutting out processed snacks will likely lead to weight loss. No thank you though. I'm going to continue learning ways to make veggies tasty enough that I'll eat them.

It's not at all restrictive and you just calling it that doesnt make it true. Despite those silly and non-factual "reasons" to the contrary, prefaced by "Has been criticised" "is it believed to be" "it may be (.. This or that..). It's just speculations against proven facts and therefore useless reasoning (begging the question, much?)

I am not “calling it that”. That is how it has been described in research papers. I even put it on the screen for you and highlight the key sentences. At least try to read it before implying I am being unfavourable for no reason

Isn’t Huberman discredited now? And what’s someone with a specialty in neurobiology doing talking about nutrition/dietetics? Ugh…
