Commitments star Andrew Strong performs on the Channel 4 Jonathon Ross show in the 1980s. Re-encoded with improved video quality over the previous upload.
I saw this movie when it first came out and never forgot it. years later I had the chance to buy the video and fell in love all over again. Now I have the collectors edition DVD, and gave a copy to my mother as well. Andrew Strong has so much heart and soul, and the balls to belt out the music in the way it was meant to be sung. I still get goosebumps listening to him. I also have his solo CD's (2) but I keep coming back to this...after all, as Joey 'the Lips' says: This way, its poetry.
I agree. What a staggering voice and talent. How did he not go on to be massive worldwide, or even just in the UK for that matter? He must have had some shockingly inept management and advisors.
Apples and oranges. Both versions are great. It's like comparing Joe Cocker and Ringo Starr singing With A Little Help From My Friends. It's a joy to listen to either one.
@steveryan124 : the film was set in the 1980s, when the Republic of Ireland was seriously economically depressed. I first went there in 1988; things were fairly terrible back then. Many young Irish nationals emigrated overseas, following in the footsteps of their ancestors.
Andrew Strong was born in 1973. When The film The commitments was released in 1991 he was only 17 years old 18YO if it was released after November 14th. He was indeed 16YO during filming!!! Love the power and soul in his voice!!
Andrew Strong from The Commitments has the soul to be the new Mr. Las Vegas. Hey casino Marketing Directors. You want to pack us rollers in, feature this guy in concert.
*Andrew Strong sings Try A Little Tenderness* It's not easy to hold the audience attention but Andrew Strong does it. Good to see other Commitments alumni in there too! #commitments #andrewstrong #irish
no disrespect to Otis Redding... but the first time i heard this song was by Andrew Strong in the Commitments and nothing has beaten it as of yet... love it
actually it was the 90's not 80's and most probably 1991, the year the film was made/released. Saw the Commitments (inc 4 original band members I think) in my hometown and had the privelage of spending the rest of the evening with them after the show in a local pub. Groupee or what! A big disapointment when arriving at the show was Andrew wasn't there, however, the performance was excellent - brilliant night during and after. In my top ten favourite films, easy.
this young man's voice is..simply....AMAZING...all the singing in the movie "The Commitments" was all done by the actors ...they all were the shit.!! haha
During the auditions for the roles in The Committments movie Andrew was the studio singer. All of the singers they auditioned weren't as good as Andrew so they cast him in the movie.
Saw you in WPG several years ago - Love to see you here in Vancouver! CHECK out Vancouver Jazz and Blues Burnaby BC! I shall be there to see you with thousands! : ) Awesome VOICE!
Flipping heck, I had no clue...I mean about the Grammy bit. Does he have any CD's out...I know I would purchase his stuff...wouldn't mind having his music on my ipod...
@NiceView23 Otis aside, this band, and especially the drummer , have nothing on Booker T and the MGs. Watch the Otis version again during the Stax tour...its musically amazing. Not to say that this version wasn't great, but the stax band is what made the otis version what it is.
somebody told my son and I that andrew was dead, so we googled him out, sent him an e-mail and got something like "Thanks for the message. Rock On! Andrew"
@NiceView23 I agree, although I prefer the Otis version of many other songs, like Love Man, Tramp, Dock of the Bay, These arms of mine and I've been loving you too long, among others.
To say this is better than the Otis Redding version is a huge disrespect. I suggest you go listen again. Otis was not only the greatest performer of this song but one of the best singers in history. Go look up his version of this song at the Monterey pops festival.
