I am planing on doing this in my Jeep. I have 2 200 watt amps that are going to be hooked to the audio out to power the speakers. Can't wait to get the screen to get started on this.

Awesome project! This far from point pointless when having a smartphone or tablet. This is the perfect starting point for building your own android auto compatible double din radio unit, instead of buying one. And when you have a pi in there anyway, this opens the door for lots of other interesting car-projects !

This is less pointless than you expect. I've an old motorbike, and this is a perfect permanent solution for satnav and music. Love it.

Just bought the parts to try this out today and it works surprisingly well. Only a few issues that will probably be fixed soon. First off, if you wish to implement this in a car stereo system, (replacing the entire head unit for this setup) there is absolutely no way of changing the volume level , unless I am missing something. Maybe an external knob to trigger a change in the volume level. Second of all, I've found that Pulsar, a music player, is the only app that you can use on Android Auto that will actually let you play music stored locally on your phone. Also, maybe it might be better to step up the screen resolution to a 1024x600 screen resolution. This might be just a personal opinion, but I think the extra pixels will make the interface look better. ( I'm currently using the official Raspberry 7 inch Touch screen). Although the official touchscreen would probably look more aesthetically pleasing with the black bars surrounding the borders compared to other screens without them if implementing into a 2 slot DIN for car stereos (leave some holes in the side edges). But I can't wait for bluetooth to be fixed and I will await further updates. That's all I've experienced so far. Thanks so much for making a video about this. There's a billion "retro pie on a pie in a [insert classic game system] shell!" videos out there now, the idea is kind of over played, stuff like this with real world uses is exactly what little SOC boards like this shine at, can't wait to see how this goes, super interested in doing a build like this myself depending on what the final capabilities end up being

this is a fantastic build and ill do it on my car the only thing missing here is a way to auto shut it off once the power is interrupted and turn it on when power is restored. it would be great if you make a video on how to install it on a car

Android head units are getting very good, to the point where the units are single din with double din screens, full Android experience, nav, RU-vid, Netflix, Spotify, you name it.

Also, as a heads up for you and others reading, there was a new release today and the guy is going on a week break now, but he says the Bluetooth is in a basic working state (still a few bugs I think), and he's also figured out the stutter in the audio playing and some people says the map works better now too. Mount this setup in a 2-din case with a good amplifier and suddenly you own a top notch car stereo system to replace any old stereo in most cars.

I wish you would revisit this with a can install/what is needed. Also it would be cool to show how to take over an existing car stereo with the Pi to turn it into a touch screen head unit. Hell I would love to see using a android tablet as your car head unit also!

I disagree with the sign off this is very useful. There are other videos that show how you can integrate a rear camera with this and have all the function of android auto (which is different than an android tablet because it is connected to your phone for all internet and calling purposes) and better than a phone because you can permanently mount it in a convenient location in your car and not worry about hands free/ cell phone laws.

i don't think this is pointless at all. android auto on your phone is a pretty horrible experience without a solid phone mount, and if you want something that is any bit permanent i think this is the way to go. i'm definitely going to do this!

I'm looking to make something like this and print my own 2DIN chassis face plate for the screen.. Guess it comes down to which amp/HAT to use and how to cool the setup tucked behind the screen. Can't wait for a follow up vid on this!

This is a great start on my project I'm dreaming up. I want to replace the 2006 factory nav system in my Honda with a pi running AA. The only thing I think will hold me up is the nav touchscreen... I doubt it will be easy to get it to USB. I expect the video is standard RCA. The radio and backup camera are totally separate from the nav

Saw a video after watching novaspirit tech's video, where a guy had this setup with the pic cam (w/ wide angle lens) and such wired into his ignition system and gearbox so when he was in reverse he had a backup cam, and all sorts of things. Imagin when bluetooth starts working you could use a bluetooth OBDII scanner for diagnostics and such too.

I think you forgot to mention that when Etcher is done writing to the SD card and you remove it and put back in you get a few Errors Asking to Format Card for those who Don't know.

This but with a radio tuner and aerial input and radio dash interface and this would make a perfect headunit replacement.. I also just had an idea for a popout feature where the screen is housed in a popout style screen and you could add wireless charging and a storage spot for your phone.

I simply love inventions that absolutely complicate everything. And to add value it's pretty expensive for absolutely nothing that you achieve. And the cherry on top of this is the 2 reasons he put : because u can and because you like raspberry... Just insane .

Does it works with the Hifiberry DAC plugged to the Pi, too? Got a RPi 3 with the CarPi Project, but Android Auto looks much better.

It's not pointless if you want to 1. install your own custom audio amp 2. want a bigger screen for navigation and 3. it would be even more useful if they ever add in a backup camera feature.

Instead of running the headphone jack to a speaker, plug a double ended aux cord into your existing stereo system and piggyback the audio thru the existing system.

pinch to zoom works fine with the raspberry pi screen.

It lacks some very important and without, the volume keys. Is there a possibility to add them to the screen?

you can still put this in your car tho. then it has an useful purpose. if you have a rly old car for example, replace the radio with this thing. would work great i think

Whatever insides your phone will be shown up in the screen of raspberry pi? like the apps in your phone?

Be aware: if you dont connect it always to the internet you need an additional real time clock RTC. And then be careful with the power supply, it doesnt run just on USB, because the pi needs 5.1 volt stable. Im on my third power supply now, and im still getting a low voltage error and a unstable system. I have this Setup, but i was always trying to build my own software because i only need only mp3 playback. Got it done with python and Qt5 on raspbian, but boot times are difficult to optimize. So maybe using crankshaft is an option, otherwise you are in the -compiling linux kernel- world, which is pretty geeky

This is a awesome idea. I have older vehicles and want to replace my head unit with this. Is there a version that doesn't have to have a radio installed All ready? Maybe use a usb soundcard? And some kind of am fm digital radio module for when I'm to lazy to plug phone in? How bout 2 amp service to phone to charge?

Any chance you could show how to get this running on the Pi 4? I've been looking around and there isn't anything good for that yet, just vague hard to follow directions

What's the advantage of this versus a 7-10 inch Android tablet?

I seriously doubt Bluetooth will be fixed with the PI 3 ever. I set one up as a slave BT audio device and it seemed to work fine until a few minutes passed and it started glitching with audio dropouts. I looked at the errors being thrown and did some research. What I ultimately decided was the audio dropouts were because BT, all 4 USB ports, and Ethernet all share the same bus! In other words, the issue may be a hardware limitation. I started looking at alternative hardware with dedicated buses for each port but just decided to punt.

Your additional hdmi lines in config.txt seem a bit off. It appears that you are setting the HDMI mode twice (first to 640 x 350 85Hz, then to custom with the cvt line), and you are missing an equals sign in your hdmi_cvt line. It's hard to argue with the results, but it may be worth checking into.

i need to figure out how to set this up in my car tbh. I have a cheap little amp that I have setup but if I could figure out how to safely wire this in my car to have it safe shutdown, I'd totally wire this up

I´ve tried it on my TV, but it doesn´t look like your screen on the 7" Touch monitor. I couldn´t use the Navigation or music. Is this a problem with TV as monitor or did I made something wrong?

I don't understand why you say it is pointless at the end? ...or am I missing something? Running AA on a tablet is whats pointless since it isn't running your phone calls and controlling your communications, just running in standalone mode and running in standalone mode on a phone means running a smaller 5-6" screen. In order to get full phone integration on a larger screen you need to do this or buy a $300 in dash head unit

I don't really get why do you need the phone and why it can't be done via bluetooth. If it's for handsfree, internet connection and GPS location, then it should be enought to have an automatic paired bluetooth connection. I am not going to fiddle with apps and cable every time I get in and out of my car.

Hey I know this is an old post but I have few questions, could it be possible to hookup a backup camera to the pi? Where it could display from the camera? I could hookup the trigger switch to the backup lights or the wires that comes off my gear selector assembly I could pin point which exact wire are triggering backup lights and hook it to that! Anyone know if there's a working version for pi4? I'm using a 4gb version with the official pi 7" screen. The screen wasn't turning on and when I checked the pi, only the red light was on. I guess I'll try it out in my pi3 but that's a quest for another day :(
