One of the best things I've seen/heard in a long, long time. I, too, had to stand up and sing Amazing Grace in front of the whole congregation - and my Dad was the Preacher....great memories this brought to me today. Thank you, Andy!
An most excellent demonstration of God's sense of humor. I absolutely love "Amazing Grace". It is one of two songs that I know the lyrics to by memory. And adding humor in no way diminishes the message. I believe it make's it better..

Great story! It reminds me of the little girl who sang the chorus to "Pistol Packin' Mama'" as a special in my father-in-law's church before her parents could stop her.

Oh wow! My mom did the exact same thing when she sang it to "House of the Rising Sun" in front of the congregation when she was little! XD lol and they had the same reaction as his dad! That's fantastic! ^^
Try doing "Amazing Grace" and "Gilligan's Island" the other way around, that is, singing the words of "Gilligan's Island" to the tune of "Amazing Grace!"
When hymns came into existence they would put the words to bar tunes so the people would learn the words to the hymn. Interesting fact from my music history class in college.

I have found over 200 tunes that fit the words to Amazing Grace. One of my favorites is 'California Girls' by the Beach Boys. And I love the fact that you can take one back from the Atheists by singing AG to the tune of 'Imagine' by John Lennon.
Geez Andy, your dad must've been really Strict. You know the late 1960's was the start of Contemporary Worship, the Jesus movement, and the era of churches with bands that have guitars, drums and stuff. A very strict person would say that Contemporary style teaches people to disrespect God, A jolly joyful person would say, it teaches people to be joyful by dancing and singing praises by dancing.
Too bad Andy seems unaware of the origin of the hymn. It recounts the experience of John Newton from the world's most vicious slave trader to one of the most effective advocate for the abolition of slavery. He joined a handful of others and together they accomplished the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire in less than three years.
