Which comes first, the equipment or the sound? Andy Brown talks about how he gets his perfect dark tone, why he likes round wound strings, and the role his gear plays in making his music.
Andy Brown has made nine albums as a leader or co-leader and appears on at least nine others as a sideman. He plays regularly across Chicago, including weekly gigs of solo guitar at the Green Mill, and leading his quartet at Andy’s Jazz Club in the loop.

I met Andy at the greenmill the other night and he was a phenomenal player and and even kinder person. Was very generous with his time.

I'm with you. My best sounding amp is the Vibroverb (2-10's) and I replaced the stock speakers with ones from Carvin and it made a significant difference. I also eschew flat wounds...they sound kind of muddy and 'thunky'. I like Thomastik Be Bops. They're expensive, but they sound great. You're a terrific player.

+1 for the Cannabis Rex! I have a 12” C Rex in both my Princeton and my Deluxe Reverb amps. Great sounding speaker!

How do you describe the different sound with the Cannabis Rex?

@@Player-To-Player Warmer overall, smooth top end. Louder than the stock speakers in either amp. Stays cleaner longer before breaking up

Ted Greene's favorite amps were the smaller Fender amps, too. As I was helping him carry out his Vibroverb from Spazio to his car. I asked "Why not the Twin?" Ted's reply, "I love the Twin Reverb. but my back!" I mounted wheels on my Twin RI, but I do now love the intimate character of the smaller amps.

Thanks for sharing this, @nickstasinos. Just goes to show that while Ted Greens was a unique talent, gravity is universal.

If you can get your hands on an old Ampeg G-12 Gemini I you'll be in heaven, especially if you like a bit of reverb, They have the prettiest reverb you'll ever hear. Not as loud as a Virbro-lux but, great sounding!

Sweetwater sells a tweed Princeton with a 12” Cannabis Rex. Great sounding amp, one of my favorites! I call it my baby Twin!

I have an inexpensive Katana. I wonder how a new speaker like the Cannabis might level up that thing.

I wanted to get one of those from Sweetwater but they were out of stock. I ended up getting a reissue black panel and put the Rex in it, don’t really dig it for some reason. The amp sounds like cardboard to my ears…sounds quite different an old one.

Takes a while to break in. Very efficient speaker, if you want early breakup it’s not the speaker for you. Just what I wanted!

@andybrownjazzguitar love your playing! I have a 70’s Vibrolux. For practicing at home, I find it’s almost too loud, can only play it at 2 and I find the sound doesn’t get really going until 3-3.5. Maybe that’s why you have the Gibson?

Not sure it's in this video but you got it. I recall him mentioning the Gibson not being loud enough for gigs.

@@Player-To-Player Old octal Gibson amp, one that Jim Hall or Tal Farlow used to play way back in the 50s.

If the camera was tilted slightly to the right, you would’ve seen a GA-50 in my basement! I love that amp.

Andy Brown is such an amazing player. His sound is impeccable, which is not just a function of his equipment and set up, but also his touch. Whether he is playing solo finger style or with a pick in combos - just incredible.

Agreed. Like he says in he video, regardless of your gear, your sound is comes from you.
