I don't think there's anymore great storytellers like Andy Griffith and Jerry Clower. When I was a kid I didn't think anything about it but now that I'm in my 50's I realize how great they were. The current state of the world is in sad shape!
@Don Taylor Mt. Airy is technically a part of the Appalachian Foothills, but people from the Winston-Salem area don't consider ourselves Appalachian. We're just as leery of hillbillies as we are of Piedmonters and Tidewaters. To call Andy Griffith an "Appalachian humorist" would be less accurate than calling him a Southern humorist.
"Murder in Coweta County" is his best role, simply because he plays against type as a racist killer. "Under the Influence," where he plays an alcoholic father raising a young Keanu Reeves, was also really well-acted. Either one of these was imo better roles than A Face In The Crowd.
Years ago my uncle offered me my first taste of moonshine. As a teenage boy I of course said yes. As he was pouring some spilled onto the table and ate the varnish off. I reconsidered and said no thank you.
While I was in the Marine Corps I lived in Newbern and my next-door neighbor was Mr. Jones. We had a barbecue for the Fourth of July and he had some moonshine in his garage. I had given him a Marine Corps blanket do rap the quart bottles in. One of them leaked. And ate holes in the wool! I did not drink any of the shine! Many years later as a cop in Newark New Jersey I did get some. It was a local and very good! A couple of years later the house with the still Blew up! They were tapping in to the electric from the pole on the street! It was an abandoned house!
Eh, don't know your story to the fullest, but I've had some good ol' Southwest Virginia 'Shine. Goes down smooth as water (smells worse than the taste), but will "grab a holt of ya" in a few minutes.

I used to have a still in a little town calked Mayberry, North Carolina. I only had one customer---Otis Campbell----but I got rich off him. But that damned deputy Barney Fife found the still and chopped it up. So I joined the Army and built a still for a M.A.S.H. unit.
I went to cooking school and another student cooked and put on the steam table for everybody to see... a whole mess of green beans with a snake head looking out! They were canned. "Hush, the others'll want one too!"
He was discovered doing humorous monologues in clubs. Check out his big hit from 1953 called What it Was, Was Football & it’s flip side : Romeo and Juliet.
Respect North Carolina yet nothin beats Arkansaw mountain dew ( home made medicine, cleaner, drain clearer, keeps away critters. And, for my uncle who converted his model T car, gasoline).
