Andy James is one of my favorite guitarists due to the way he can model the notes and scales into his music.

Andy gives excellent lessons and this one is a great intro to sweeps. He is using an elastic band (like a hair tie) at the nut to mute the unwanted string noise. I would suggest not using the band and making sure that you are practicing as cleanly as possible so as you progress your technique will be much cleaner.

Thousands of hours of practice have been put into Andy's technique. There aren't any shortcuts when building skill.. Put the time in and it will happen. It is how Humans are capable of learning practically anything (with time). Repetition is the key to learning anything.

Problems I have: 1. My hammer ons aren't NEARLY as loud as the picking so I need to pick while coming back up like at 1:00 when he goes back up, I HAVE to pick those or no noise is made. Amp problem? 2. Hand can't get comfortable with sweeping? 3. How do I mute some strings and let some ring? 4. I feel like my wrist does most of the picking in this, is this normal?
@Evolutionz2k12
@Evolutionz2k12 8 лет назад
+Zuiax I have the same problem, my hammer-ons are too quiet and I get lots of noise aswell. I also think this is kinda an amp problem. The good and expensive amps have a very good noise gate (and my Podfarm 2 just sounds good with a lot of distortion), I recommend you just use a hairband around your fretboard to mute played strings... If you are not comfortable with sweeping you should just sweep I guess :D I practised both hand individually with the easy minor and major patterns. Not very diversified but just do this while watching TV or something. I started to learn sweeping when I just played for 3 months because I just wanted to play some Avenged Sevenfold solos (especially Afterlife) I think you can be able to sweep a little bit after half a year. When youre going to the higher notes mute played strings with your picking hand (just the latest string u played should ring, not two) and when you go back to the low string try to mute with the fingers (this seems way harder for me). and just hold your pick how you feel the most comfortable. I hope you understand this shit and no english ripperino? :D
@pickleslz9919
@pickleslz9919 8 лет назад
He has emgs, which have very much compression which makes it more the same, so idk what more to do more than to hammer on as hard as possible and also don't pick to hard or else it will be high contrast between hammer on and picking.

When Andy is descending he tends to hammer on from nowhere instead of downward sweeps. Michael Romeo does this too a lot.

@galacticoasis

Mistake Andy! At :37 you said hammer on at 10 on the B. Should be hammer on 12 on the B string. Also I notice you when you hit/pull off the 14 fret you sometimes use your pinky and and sometimes your ring finger. For discipline and muscle memory shouldn't we stick with certain fingering?

What do you do so that the strings won't ring out Cuz I try to palm mute so the strings won't ring to much but I still get the low ringing and its obviously that I'm not playing it clean.

my philosophy is a bit harder... i like to practic my licks on a bass after i did on the acoustic... so my fingers are stronger and more flexible when i have to play it on my les paul...
@machinehead891
@machinehead891 11 лет назад
That is good in some cases but if you're practising reducing tension in your playing then it's not wise to do so on a different type of instrument. Acoustic guitars usually require slightly more tension to play than electric guitars. But for things like sweeping, yes you can benefit greatly from practicing on an acoustic :)
@TheEmilkl
@TheEmilkl 11 лет назад
play it slow then gradually increase speed and it's totally playable :) no quitting bro ! :)
@TheN00bPolice
@TheN00bPolice 10 лет назад
strange dimished example, why not just go up and down in the sme shape, that's more of a broken chord than an arpeggio. Also why not upstroke the note on the b-string for consistency?

my philosophy is, if you can make it sound awesome on an acoustic, you can make it sound amazing on an electric, so its best to practice on an acoustic guitar before playing on an electric, just some advice
