What kind of a Moran would give a thumbs down??? Andy James kicks ass. Super clean and super fast. It is amazing how cool he can make a pentatonic scale sound.

When I clicked the video, I was expecting the usual one-position pentatonic lick, but fucking hell, was I surprised lol.

yea hes explained it in a few vids he just find it flows a bit easier on 2 note per string stuff esp over 2 strings to start on an upstroke - give it a shot it feels a bit less clumsy after a while ... but im still really used to starting on a down

he is using the E minor pentatonic + notes of the major scale, or using the D major pentatonic + notes of the major scale ???

Blake Webber Hi, Blake :-) He's stealing notes from dorian...specifically the natural 2 and 6 scale degrees. That's where the F# and the C# come from. With regards to the alleged A# in the notated version in the link...I'd say that should probably be respelled as it's enharmonic equivalent if we were to be 100% theoretically accurate about things but considering the context and purpose of the notation I don't think anyone really cares. It's a really common rock and blues guitar technique to steal these notes. Wylde, Dimebag, Hendrix, Clapton, John5, the list goes on forever...are all examples of players who use this technique. Give it a try in your own licks! It's super fun :-D Have a great day!

D, E, G, A, A#, B, C# 7 notes. Penta is greek and means five. So this is not pentatonic. E minor pentatonic would be E, G, A, B, D. That makes 5. In Blues we have blue notes, that's where the A# comes from. So we can use it while still beeing in pentatonic/blues territory. But where does that C# come from? It's not from e pentatonic, nor e minor. And the chromatic A, A#, B tell us we are not in major/minor territory anyway. Whatever this is, it sounds great on its own, but some may have a hard time to find a good chord to go underneath it. Without good knowledge of theory or the best of ears this is gonna sound out of key in most cases.

The C# is from something called E dorian. A dorian scale is just a minor scale, but with a raised 6th degree. So E dorian would be E F# G A B C# D. A dorian scale basically sounds a bit brighter and "jazzier" than a normal minor scale. The dorian scale is something called a *mode,* you should look into them if ur interested. Yeah you are correct, this is not fully pentatonic. But the C# is a pretty common add to pentatonic licks. Not many solos are strictly just pentatonic notes, and that sounds kinda lame after a while. You mentioned the "blue note", A#. A# and C# are both little things you can add to spice up a solo from being just pentatonic. Definetely not a note to stay on for too long, try using itas just a passing note between B and D. It can sound good on its own too, tho. If you play it on top of an A major chord, then it sounds great. In the key of E minor, an A major chord can be "borrowed" from the E dorian scale (different scales have different chords u can form, too. In this case the A major chord is built from notes of the E dorian scale, A C# E).

It also sounds great on top of just an E minor chord if you play a D just after it and take it from there
