Roger returned it from the baseline instead of miles away like Med or Nadal, which gave the server less time to compose himself after serve. I think he invented the sneak attack, taking serve balls early inside the baseline.
For me, it's not just the speed , but the placement of the serve on the court. That should have been an ace. However, when I have watched the Serena William's serve in Wimbledon 2012, they didn't possess that velocity, but the placement made them into aces.
It makes me wonder how hard she could hit it if she wasn’t so concerned about placement. She hit a 129 on the line a couple times. She might be able to get into the mid 130’s if she was just putting the ball in
You wouldn't return 140 if it hit the sweet spot of your racket. 140 is crazy. Just get it in and 99% of people will barely see it let alone return it. Roger was just special.
@jj read carefully. The point isnt that a casual couldn't handle 140. Its that 140 doesn't need placement. Only Roger could make you think "oh hmm, if only he placed it better" lol
It wasn’t placed very well, and you can see fed read him like a book. The timing is unreal, but that’s Federer. If this were some one else, it would be truly impressive. But this is textbook fed. Just look at the footwork. He was reading to his child there.
as courts were generally faster back then, it would retain more of its speed after the bounce. Returning serve has probably become easier over the years
You have not played tennis at a high level. You can’t practice returning 140mph serves because so few in the world are capable of it and that speed pushes past even some top players ability to react in time if they are not standing at the back wall to create more time.
