Andy Weir, author of The Martian, brings you a thrilling science fiction novel, Project Hail Mary. A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this incredible new science-based thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Artemis. Weir is a lifelong space nerd, devoted hobbyist, and connoisseur of astronomy, physics, orbital mechanics, and NASA history / manned spaceflight.
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission-and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.
Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian-while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

Amazing. I'll tell something, Andy Weir, even if i could live a thousand lives, i would not have the skills and sensibility to write The Egg. You're a gem of a mind. Live long and prosper.

Regarding college: I love Andy's thoughts on that. I went back to college in my 40s to finish an engineering degree. The state required these unrelated social "science" courses. But our college handled it brilliantly. For example, Psychology 101. Prof and we just read from the one book. Before exams, he gave us all the test questions to study for. And told us where the answers were. But despite that, when he gave the exam, he gave it open-book and said we could use our notes! - I'll tell you, we really appreciated that. I mean, I was taking three programming languages, calculus, and electronics design at the same time and really had no bandwidth left to learn what Frodo/Freud/whoever thought about sex dreams.

Im currently creating a plot line for a sci-fi novel, so this was entertaining and very inspiring. I hope to finish it by the end of the year and i think i will set a weekly goal for myself like you to move it forward. Thank you both for this awesome conversation

That was a great interview Profesor Keating. Some modern SF writers are also "on high microtubule frequency" apparently. If we are here. Could you please interview Liu Cixin as well some day? I bet it would be one of the most popular "Into the Impossible" ever!

I was listening to this in the summer of 21, walking through the local parks and literally brought to tears of joy and humility at multiple times throughout the final act. Truly a game changing, genre defining sci-fi tale for the modern age. I felt like I'd been waiting for this particular first contact story my whole life (I'm 43). Andy, keep that wild imagination of yours firing, the world is a much better place with your books. Project Hail Mary is an absolute rollercoaster in every sense of the word. You inspire me to maybe one day, take the deep dive and create a fully fleshed out sci-fi story of my own.

Andy Weir: I would make W. Michael Gear's Spider Trilogy into movies. Its not too far out but has great characters.

While I agree with the general premise that college/university should teach what is requested by the student, for most subjects/studies in STEM and computer science, students will benefit from having knowledge/understanding of related subjects. If only because knowing how to solve problems in one field, can help you come up with ways to solve a problem in your specialized area of knowledge. The knowledge of related fields may not have to be as deep as that of a specialist, but the basics, and perhaps a bit more would be beneficial in a lot of situations/jobs.

2000 years ago there were reports of objects that looked like Roman shields moving across the sky. It's not such a long time for those visitors back then to have sent back a message saying "hey, we got something interesting here" and for more to turn up 100 years ago and on. The speed of light can remain inviolable, and trade and anthrolopology con go on across those larger time scales.

Ok. Jumped ahead and stopped the music. Thanks. Little production is needed. Good equipment, good levels and background noise like table banging and good to go. Back up vid and sound too.

So Stanton Friedman, nuclear physicist, didn’t approach the study of UFOs from a scientific and analytical perspective? This guy obviously hasn’t done his homework, but don’t bother him with the facts…
