The final scene of Five by Five is such a well-written twist, because it forces you to go back and reconsider all of Faith's behavior. The way she perks up when Angel is mentioned (because he might actually be strong enough to kill her). The way she's burning every bridge she can, as fast as she can (Cordy, Wesley, even W&H). Even the gleeful "fun" she seems to be having while goading Angel throughout the episode - it mirrors the way some depressed people suddenly become way happier once they officially make the decision to end their own life, because there's finally an end in sight, and no longer any need to worry about long-term problems.

The parallels with the flashbacks of Angel in 1x18 showed us that Angel went through the same things Faith is going through right now. Despite him having a soul, he was still prone to doing bad things because that’s what he was used to. Angel is truly the 1 person that really understands her.

God Eliza’s performance at the end of five by five is phenomenal. The entire scene is award worthy i really mean it. Sometimes people forget faith is YOUNGER than Buffy and has been through SO MUCH even BEFORE she became the slayer. Unlike Buffy who’s alway had an ENTIRE robust support system she’s ALWAYS essential been alone. For her to have pretty much given up on herself and for Angel to refuse to walk away like EVERYONE else has done to her is so beautiful. Not supporting any of the wrong she did but she’s SO complex and so much more than being just “evil”. 10/10 episode
@ashleym780
@ashleym780 10 дней назад
I totally agree! Eliza Dushku is phenomenal as Faith and Faith is such a tragic character. But is she younger than Buffy? I mean we know slayers are typically called as teens but I feel like most of the fandom has always assumed they’re the same age or faith is a year or 2 older. I’ve always thought she was older bc she was old enough to drop out of high school and rent a motel room. Granted a bad motel room but still lol
@GemnEyes
@GemnEyes 10 дней назад
Yeah I mean, you saw what Buffy turned out like in season 3's The Wish, without her support system. Seems you either go crazy like Faith, or become stoic and lifeless like alt-Buffy was. Like that's what life is normally like for the slayer.
@AustinSamson1999
@AustinSamson1999 10 дней назад
@@GemnEyes 100%. I love Buffy and how strong and independent she can be but I think the fans forget sometimes that just cuz her name is the one on the title card it DOESNT mean she’s the ONLY focus and impotent part of this show, her contributions ARENT the only ones who matter. Like Buffy NEVER would have made it out of season 1 with Xander, they’re all seabed each other SO MANY TIMES and proven that Buffy is special herself 100% but her friends are her TRUE power and what separate her from every other slayer in history. Good callback to the Wish cuz I use that example all the time when discussing faith. That version of Buffy was essential faith 2.0. But it’s important to remember that even in that alternate reality all that’s changed is Buffy DIDNT move from LA to sunnydale. So that’s like THREE years of her life without a support system and she was ROUGH and RUGGED and battle scared and then she DIED. Faith has NEVER had a support system EVER before she first started bonding with the scoobies, so like yeah no excuses for what she’s done but if ANYBODY deserves a chance and some empathy it’s 100% this girl who’s entire life has been pretty tragic
@AustinSamson1999
@AustinSamson1999 10 дней назад
@@ashleym780 I think it’s important to remember tho this is shady hotel in the 90’s in a wild town like sunnydale when faith got there. Idk if the rules and regulations would be super strict to care if she’s underage or not cuz that dude who died who rented her the room was shifty AF anyways. I honestly don’t think there’s was ever any type of confirmation either way to Faiths EXACT age other than that she just is close to Buffy which at WORST would mean she’s slightly older or younger. I think the way i interpreted how the rules and powers works tho is that should it would by definition of how the slayer line and potentials work is that most likely it finds the younger the better. I don’t think it would EVER go to somebody two years older than an 18 year old Buffy by season 3 cuz the council already said the MAJORITY of slayers don’t even make it TO their 18th bday in season 3 when they took her powers and set up that test. The most likely bet is Faith is around 17 when she’s introduced, slightly behind Buffy whose birthday isn’t too far into the season. Like the writers wanted them to be around the same age cuz of how much they were going to be parallels story wise, Buffy got her powers at 15 and the only reason Faith was older than that is cuz they KNEW a 15 year old later wouldn’t hold the same weight and be able to be an equal rival to Buffy the same way she could if they’re peers. I honestly think the reason so many fans perceive Faith as older is cuz she just seem outwardly more “adult” and “mature” than Buffy is even tho WE know really how emotionally traumatized she really is. Faith comes in as a hot shot new top fighter equal to Buffy and she’s challenging her world view, interesting her friends and family, is independent and self sufficient, doesn’t go to school, seemingly in control of her destiny but at the end of the day we really see how damaged Faith is and how she jsut a lonely YOUNG girl at the end of day, legit ALL the mayor had to do was say “hey, I CARE about you.” And show it through a few meaningful actions and she was INSTANTLY in cuz all she wanted was TRUE love and acceptance and Buffy legit made her feel like and OUTSIDER since day ONE of her arrival. I love Buffy but people forget it’s a plot point she WAS Cordelia before she was a slayer, and faiths introduction is one of the few examples of that side of Buddy coming back out and her becoming SUPER insecure and the Hostile in defense becuase of it. Sorry for rambling but I hope I answered ur question with my thought process on the matter, god the writing is jsut SO LAYERED and SO GOOD😭🙌
@ashleym780
@ashleym780 10 дней назад
@@AustinSamson1999 *SPOILERS JUST IN CASE* first of all, thank you so much for saying that Buffy use to be just like Cordelia! SO many people just tend to forget that and for me it’s what makes Cordelia’s and Buffy’s dynamic so interesting bc Cordy didn’t have to grow up quite as fast as Buffy. Second, as soon as I posted my comment I thought to myself “then again Buffy fully rented an apartment in “Anne” at 17.” 😂😂 I definitely don’t think Faith is a lot older than Buffy but I always figured like a year older. Her trauma, like you said , making her seem more “mature” when looking at her through the eyes of the Scoobs. The majority of slayers don’t make it to 18 but we know that they have had slayers called that are older. Nikki Woods in particular. And we can’t really go back the standard rule when Faiths entire existence as a slayer is the exception to the rule. Sorry, I’m rambling too. It’s so easy to do with this show! Basically I’ve always thought Faith was called at 17/18. She meets Buffy then but is a little older than her 😂 and yes! The writing is so freakin good!

Never forget that Angel is always a vampire, soul or not. Even when he was still on Buffy in that episode where Miss Calendar was possessed by that demon he explained he had a demon in him itching for a fight. He told Buffy a couple times that he could feel it all the time. His soul makes him care enough to restraign it and chose to be good. That drug basically turned off his control switch, or at least turned it down a bit, just enough to let at least a little of that vampire out uncontrolled for a little while. Five by Five is one my favorite episodes in the whole show. I've always liked Faith, good or bad. Eliza acted her azz off in this one and I love it!

16:55 a fan theory I prefer is that this had nothing to do with removing the curse. It simply removed Angel's inhibitions. The demon is always there but held in check, and the demon is just the human without its moral compunctions or emotional empathy.. plus it happens to be hungry for human blood instead of a big mac, which leads it to more murder than your average psychopath.

Besides showing flashbacks to Angelus episode 17 also shows Angelus more a mental state for Angel and if he choose to he can become that thing again while still having his soul intact. That the line between the two personalities is thinner then previously shown in The Buffy series.

This! Angelus is his darkest side let loose unchecked. His soul may give him the capacity for empathy, but it is his choice to fight for the best in himself-for compassion and love in spite of what he's lived through and perpetrated. And it's a constant fight, a theme you'll see more of with him, and that you saw reflected in Faith too. The "fine line" he walks is the understanding that if he stops fighting for a second, he can easily spiral back into it, which is what the drugs did.

Eternity was an interesting episode exploring the power of celebrity and how people can be taken in and manipulated by it. Angel having his drink spiked being drugged and almost getting that moment of pure happiness makes us anxious watching this. Funny when Cordelia calls her a slut, accusing her of having sex with Angel. Wesley knows it's not real and just an illusory feeling and saves the day here. Again the episode shows the dangers is spiking or drugging people as you never know what the consequences can be. Funniest part when Angelus tells Cordelia having to sit through her acting was even worse than being to Hell itself! This now sets up nicely E18 an E19 very much a two parter as good as anything from either show. Enjoy!

Five By Five a brilliant episode from S1 really a two part episode with the next one Sanctuary. Here we see Faith again who has completely lost control, after escaping Sunnydale from Buffy. She comes to L.A. to wreak more havoc. A brilliant comedy moment when Angel is talking to the 'Suit' in Wolfram & Hart with business speak, and he doesn't know who he is, a parody of Michael J Fox in Secret Of My Success. A fantastic ending in the alleyway in the rain ( this show loves alleyways in the rain) with Faith begging Angel for help after her serious nervous breakdown. Angel knows what she has gone through and offers help. A great final shot of Wesley in the distance as well dropping the knife. One of the most iconic endings to any episode in The Buffyverse. This episode and the following one E19 are two of the best from both shows.

It's worth remembering that none of the characters 100% know how Angel's curse works, not even Angel. Willow might, as she was the one who put the curse back on him a few years ago, but she was sort of in a trance when she cast the spell, and she was working from a computer translation anyway. The spell was basically lost knowledge that Jenny Calendar pieced back together. So, Angel has a vague idea of how it works, and so do Cordy and Wes, but none of them are 100% sure. They don't really know any more about it than we do as the audience.

For Cody's question about Angel's soul: Angel didn't lose his soul in Eternity from the drug, but remember that Angel is always the demon. He's always trying to suppress his instincts to act as a vampire, because his soul gives him remorse and empathy... but his nature is still to kill and feed. So as soon as Angel lets his guard down, stops trying to be good, his true nature comes to the surface. The drug made him content to the point that he didn't feel the need to fight himself anymore, and the demon took over temporarily. I think the misunderstanding most people have with Angel is that they forget that he is the demon, the same demon that is Angelus, he just has a conscience now... but the demon is still there, waiting.

@@terriblegamerstory531 It’s such an interesting episode for that reason and overall they did a great job in S1 of Angel of adding complexity without retconning too much of what was established on Buffy. Throughout we get a better sense of his inner thoughts and struggles. Many people feel like Eternity is a bad episode that sort of muddles what the soul and Angel’s curse is. But I do ‘t mind it. It’s just another emphasis on the dichotomy that is Angel and how it’s all about choices, not innateness.

Even though the focus of many comments will be on Eliza and the outstanding performance as Faith here, I really want to emphasise how important this episode was for Wesley. Literally the comic relief parody of Giles when introduced, self-important and performative in his role as a watcher, he had no experience, was a bumbling fool, was incredibly inept and immediately frightened and not able to help at all. Even immediately revealing crucial secrets to big bads, like Balthazar, like who had the macguffin of the day, for fear of being killed. Wesley in this episode not only stands staunch and resolute against Angel in his belief that Faith can be rehabilitated (when before he’s always fawned and acted like a snivelling sycophant before Angel) but the moment Faith attacks Cordelia, he _immediately_ attacks Faith back. Was it the right decision? Perhaps not - but his irrational fearlessness and seeking to protect Cordelia was such an impactful action that even Faith was shocked. He then with great dignity resists her torture. Not only that, he pinpoints a vulnerable moment in her monologue to sharply mock her. Wesley is changing and growing. SPOILER: And Wesley will eventually become to Giles, what Faith is to Buffy. Which is fitting, making him the perfect Watcher to Faith. It’s a long journey, an _unhappy_ journey. But it’s nevertheless one of the greatest depictions of character development on either show.

I think that the phrasing of the Clause of the curse can be interpreted in two ways depending on what part we focus on. The curse purpose is to make Angel feel guilty of all the suffering he caused as Angelus. They gave him back His soul for that purpose. If he has a moment of true happines would mean he stopped feeling guilt for a moment so also if his mind Is altered like in this episode even though It is not true happines what triggers the Clause Is that he stopped feeling bad.

Great reactions to important episodes in the progression of the show. We knew that Angel, like Buffy, would always take a normal plot and place a twist that was new and exciting. But Eternity had twists that were different than Buffy. We knew now that Angel was not just darker but it had at its core a difference from Buffy. The term used often is darker but that covers up the following core elements of rage, anger, sadistic behavior and the pleasure of inflicting, menace, and narcissism. Yes we knew now that Angel was different. Then we had the great 5X 5. This story was the other point that we realized signified the difference with Buffy… redemption. A reason that this story follows Eternity. The very menacing evil embodied by Faith is now confronted by the need of forgiveness and redemption. We did not fully understand but we knew Angel was really going to be different. Buffy is about her journey to becoming an independent, strong woman. Angel is about the tearing down of the facade, the need to learn to love yourself, and the torture of learning to become the best you can be morally . Buffy is about personal choices and Angel is about the acceptance of bad decisions made for selfish reasons.

My take on Angelus and Angel/human self. His human self died a sad young man. His soul moved on to the afterlife until it was restored to his now vampire body. Angel is always a vampire; he's always a demon. But his human self's humanity allows him to live as if he were human, experiencing all of what is to be human, including guilt, love, regret, temptation, all of it. But the former human and the vampire are one, always entwined. The drugs did what it potentially does to all humans, lose their best judgment. It wasn't Angelus. It was Angel being a poopyhead. Compare it to the Gorch brothers who were already killers, giving them their souls probably wouldn't have changed much.

This is my Head cannon for why Angelus came back. His soul never left he got loopy and his inhibitions dropped but we have to remember Angel wants to do bad things he just chooses not to. You remember when his younger sired vampire came to town? (Played by Hawkeye) He was witnessing those murders in his sleep and he even said they were not nightmares. He loves it. I think Angel inhibitions dropped and the demon that demon that was always there was able to emerge and have fun. Now in the back of Angles mind he didn't have full control so he couldn't enjoy it fully so no perfect happiness but it still allowed the demon to come out and play for a bit. I hope that made some kind of sense and that I explained it ok. The ending of 5 by 5 breaks my heart each time.

Foyke was in the original draft. Cordy mentions a great lunch at Mirabelle. At some point either before of ater this episode, somecfriebds went to Mirabelle for a friend's birthday dinner. Joss was invited and actually came. He had never been there before and loved it. I thought thst was after this, but could have been before it. It's funnier to me if the dinner was after the show. The actress is notcsmart. Beingva vampire means she will never film in daylight again. No one would ever hire her. Her agaent was the same guy who tried to represent Angel in the first episode, right before Angel and Cordy first reunite. There is a great blooper involving Angel smashing through the big window. 5x5 notes to follow in a reply.

5X5: Written by Jim Kouf who spent most of his career writing movies like Rush Hour and National Treasure. He wrote the final fight to happen in the rain. We couldn't afford to hire a rain truck. During filming the scene, it started to absolutely pour rain. You can tell it is real by the amount pouring out of the rain gutters. They wouldn't waste that water if it was fake. Everyone nailed each take so the transition from the fist completely dry take to the final take shit entirely in a downpour was flawless.

Five by Five is _the_ episode I’ve been the most excited for you guys to watch out of the entire Buffy/Angel franchise. Faith is my favourite character, and this is my favourite episode. You know me, I’m very loquacious, but I’ve nothing to say. The episode speaks for itself. The way she completely breaks down at the end, screaming “I’m evil, I’m bad- I’m evil!” is so beyond heartbreaking. Something in Eliza’s performance is so real, raw and visceral that for a moment, you totally forget that you’re watching a television show.

It's great for me, one of the best of the first season because there are more coming that are also very good and I can't say here until they arrive. But it has very good chapters later on, cross over and not that they are very good. This is one of them and for me, Eternity too. But yes I liked Faith a lot, a lot, and so did I, and later on I'll say something that I can't right now because it would spoil it for those who see it for the first time.😂

I think the soul and happiness is like this. It doesn't make his soul go away, he still had his guilt and conscience. But the 'happy' drug just made all of that muted. Angel as he is now with his soul is STILL Angelus, he is just Angelus capable of compassion and shame/guilt. He isn't suddenly a different person with a different personality.

Love the little coded moment where Lilah essentially picked Faith up. Who knows how murdery she would have gotten, but it's just a little indication of the bisexuality Eliza Dushku has confirmed she played in the role (she believed Faith had feelings for Buffy - in Enemies where Faith kisses Buffy's forehead, apparently it was initially planned to be a kiss on the lips but got vetoed by the network).

Omg isn’t Faith complex🤘😜 such a great character with as you both discussed layers. It just shows how brilliant a tv show can be when everyone involved takes time and care with what they are doing, all I can say is the journey is journeying😜 lol even after 20+ years the buffyisms get buffying😊

Oooooh been waiting for five by five! I watched angel as a kid when the reruns were on tnt (also how I watched charmed like cody!) but I never watched buffy until like 5 years ago so I never fully understood the context as a kid when I saw this episode. I just remember thinking faith was such a cool character and so freaking scary in this episode.

I think you were right in assuming that his defenses were lowered so Angelus found a way through. He didn't feel guilty, and he wasn't in control of himself. His demon is always there under the surface, he's always fighting Angelus down. It is a little bit of a play on the lore in this episode, though.

1X17 I know Angel didn't save a famous person and avoid getting hit by a car to avoid Cordelia's question, but what a lucky break anyway. 1X18 Eliza's best Faith performance is that ending scene.

I think they wanted to bring in Angelus for an episode so people that only watch this show can know what Angelus is, so they can understand the threat of what Angelus could do.

30:12 Angel was a vampire for 145 years but only human for 26 years, he didn't even remember what his original human name was. So now with a soul he doesn't know how to be human or how to be a vampire, that's why he was still trying to be his normal evil self.
@smkfet

19:13 Many people have said this, but it is vital to understand that Angel isn't truly a different person from Angelus, which gives the whole character a darker context. He is ALWAYS literally thirsty for human blood and figuratively thirsty to do really fucked up shit to people. Putting him in a more adult series where he faces the challenges of adult life will have interesting interactions with that inner demon. Always keep that in mind when you see the lengths certain characters will go to fuck with Angel.

I always had the same question about Angels soul that Cody had. And i kinda got a new theroy on it while watching this. I Think its simply a result of of the physical aspect, Angel took the drugs and it tricked Angels mind into litterally believing it turned him into Angelous. Angel believed it and his mind turned back to Angelous, but his soul was in tact. Maybe i dunno, just a thought.

Angel was *NOT* turned into Angelus. His skin did *NOT* turn super pale (which was a moment one hint that he wasn't actually Angelus). He did *NOT* lose his soul. He was *drugged* into briefly believing that he was Angelus. But he wasn't.

As much as I *love* Eternity (it's not an all-time favourite, but it was the first episode that hooked me onto AtS when I first watched), the drug loophole is admittedly stupid and lore-breaking and requires you to suspend your disbelief. The writers of Buffy and Angel have said multiple times they'd rather be a little lore-breaking in order to get to an emotional truth if necessary. Having said that, there are decent explanations fans have given over the years that *can* make it work. At various points in the series, vampires and demons describe feeling spiritually "pulled" towards evil. Evil is always the compulsion, and it's one that Angel is fighting constantly. There's nothing objectively stopping him from going out and murdering a bunch of people except his own choices, which he's capable of because of his soul. But if Angel decided being good was too big a pain in the ass, he could just go be Angelus again, because that's what's always under the surface. The drug essentially releases Angel's inhibitions, giving a glimpse of Angel's "true" impulses.

You can cheese it by saying the guilt is what keeps Angelus at bay, so even tho the soul was still present, it didn't feel guilt due to the drugs and thus the demon (which has been described as a secondary creature inside a body) was free to come and party

They could have made another cookie cutter slayer with the character but what Eliza does with Faith just makes every episode she guests in five by five times better! After Caleb, whom you guys have not met yet, Angelus is the scariest villain in the whole entire Buffy-verse, to me. Nobody is as scary as Caleb, though with his toxic deadly misogyny) DB's pulling off that Angelus part for several episodes is what really showed everyone that he needed his own show. I enjoyed him utterly in Bones, as well, after this because I love criminal and medical procedurals. Best thing about Browns is he got to show off his comedic chops - - which he has by the bushel. I grew up on law and order and have spent some of the best of my last decade watching The Closer. (There's never been a better police procedural in my opinion, including all the law and order's. And there's never been one that was meant to be a drama that was funnier, either!) I'm also glad that David apparently is doing really well in a series he has right now that I don't watch.

Them trying to escape Cordelia’s play 💀 Angel really stays getting hit by cars. Cordelia fangirling so hard. Her elbow is in the paper! 😂 A crazed stalker sending creepy notes ? Cordelia eavesdropping. Angel busting through the window! Oop Rebecca not seeing Angel’s reflection. I don’t trust Oliver. He knows something. Rebecca immediately catching on that he’s a vampire. “Evil Angel never would’ve worn those pants.” 😂 Angel on the red carpet is wild. An old stunt man? I don’t like the way Rebecca looked at Angel. She’s gonna want him to turn her. Of course Oliver was behind it. Her inviting Cordelia on a shopping trip & her fawning over her. Not her trying to drug Angel! We were rooting for you girl. Angel showing her what being a vampire is like 😳 DB crushing the change in Angel. Rebecca giving final girl energy. I always love soulless Angel. Not Angellus dissing Cordy’s acting then her giving an Oscar worthy performance 🙌🏼 Wesley & Cordelia coming in clutch trapping Angellus. Cordy being petty for the tough love & not untying Angel 😂💀 The gang of demons by the trash can fire was a crazy opening. Poor Wesley getting demon goo all over him after Angel beheaded it 😂 The transitions stay scaring me. They’re so intense out of nowhere 😂 Faith rolling into town & immediately jumping someone. Classic Faith. Yay, more Angel flashbacks! Oh the Gypsy curse origins! Faith really loves the club scene. Living dead girl 🖤🎶 Honestly iconic dance fight club scene 🙌🏼 W&H is not happy with Angel intervening. Darla turn on Angellus so fast when he was cursed! Angel stopping Faith’s crossbow shot in the middle of the lobby! I was wondering why nobody from Sunnydale told them she was awake & on the loose. Angel undercover in W&H talking business was hilarious 😂 David in a suit tho 🔥 Even the lawyer mentioned his suit 💀 Dennis trying to protect Cordelia is my favorite thing 💚 Faith attacking Cordy & Wes. Kidnapping & torturing Wesley. “You are a piece of s**t” Yes Wesley! Angel came to play. Their fight scene! 🙌🏼 Of course it starts raining. Faith’s breakdown 💔 I really liked these 2 episodes. You get to see how Angel has walked on both sides of good & evil & how it’s possible to change your ways. Maybe he’ll be the one who can break through to Faith if there’s gonna be anyone who can. Living for these reactions guys. So close to the season finale! 🖤

The gypsy curse restored the soul of Liam to Angelus, creating Angel. The purpose is to keep him in penance... all broody with guilt. Remember Jenny Calendar's uncle? What doesn't make sense is that perfect contentment / happiness breaks the curse & the demon within ejects his soul... thus unleashing Angelus! If the gypsies had warned Angel, he would have tried to avoid being happy - ever! So anyway, seems the drugs put Angel's soulful inhibitions (morality, guilt etc) in a coma, so the inner demon was free to play. What doesn't make sense is that, without a heartbeat or breath, Angelus could metabolize the drug in just a few hours. Good thing this is just TV fiction! The term 5x5 seems to be from early civilian & military ham radio operations. I'm guessing the first knobs went up to 5, not 11. Internet quote -->> Radiotelegraph signal reporting formats have two signaling systems: one is signal strength, the other is the intelligibility of said signals. Both go from 1 (very bad) to 5 (very good). So if one side of the radio communication asks for the status of the others' signal, they can respond Five by five to inform them that the signal is good, loud, and clear. As a musician, Christian Kane (Lindsey the lawyer) has had 1 album and 2 singles on the Country charts. He's got a smooth voice.
