Jason Calacanis is a technology entrepreneur, angel investor, and the host of the weekly podcast This Week in Startups. As a scout for Silicon Valley venture capital firm Sequoia Capital and later as an angel investor, Jason has invested in 150 early-stage startups, including four that have achieved billion-dollar valuations (so far). His book, "Angel: How to Invest in Technology Startups," is published by HarperBusiness.
Calacanis and Google Research Operations Manager Heath Row discuss the skills needed to pick a hit investment, what to look for in founders and investment opportunities, why VC should be democratized, and the difference between Silicon Alley, the Digital Coast, and Silicon Valley.

Jason’s main philosophy in a nutshell: if you don’t keep trying, taking risks, luck won’t come your way.

Love all the principles and perspectives on angel investing by Jason. One interesting thing is when he said that Snapchat is a 5 billion dollar company, and probably not a 10 billion one. 5 years later today it's a 120 billion dollar company. It's insane!

This is very accurate. I used to run a startup and have had legit mental health problems since then. Depression, anxiety, insomnia etc. It's very manageable for me. But I can imagine some people go off the deep end after running/founding a startup. It is nothing like the media makes it seem.

People don't really get how hard it's to start and run a startup. Believe me, it may ruin your life or at least fk you up mentally. It's nothing like cool as it's painted in the media.

10:05 It's very hard to be the founder - you don't sleep at night, you have 6wks to 12mo's runway, your product is probably under assault from competitors, you've got to convince people to come to your company, and they're probably with you only 6 months and leave. Most days as the founder are generally hard. It's a hard life, and it never gets easier. 18:20 All of the great change in the world comes from startups.

lol. With investing and stuff, I went completely all-in four years ago without knowing anything by that time, and yes the learning part really does happen differently and I would say quicker because one puts himself into survival mode. Whenever I made profits Id never before seen on my bank account, it did not touch my bank account long before going straight to other investment opportunitites that offered themselves (secondary market of a startup for example someone offered shares at ground floor. So I made 7K with an nft which costed me 60, the 7000 I'd put into shares of the back then startup, and the total amount now is woth +18.5K now. that's +300X !). I'm just moving numbers and trying to enlarge them. A couple of Bond movies did that to me.

you have to be careful. how do you get the green energy in the first place. how much earth do you have to pulverize, how much sea bed do you have to ruin, how much fossil fuel energy do you have to burn to allow green energy, how many river ecosystems (hydropower) do you destroy. what happens to the people downriver when China builds a hydropower plant. ,...

"... Bitcoin is probably one of the most massively manipulated currencies in the world - or one of the most manipulated things in the world." The humble beginnings and ideals of a decentralized cryptocurrency have certainly morphed into something else entirely. I have high hopes that future projects will have better success. Bitcoin was a great attempt.

You wanna become next Zuck or become the next billionaire, good for you. Give it a try, though above-mentioned goals are not the kind of factors that usually makes you a success.
