She is not emulating Nina Simone. This song is honoring Screamin Jay Hawkins. At the beginning of the video, if you noticed, she made changes to the music sheet, director smiles and she's holding a candle with a picture of Screamin Jay Hawkins on it. She makes the song her own but respecting the style of the original artist including wanting to film it in black and white as Jay Hawkin's version. She did other covers of great jazz singers such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Dinah Washington and so on.

It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this! "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her cover). She starts low, rising in intensity throughout and finishes in an unexpected and practically operatic style. You must go and listen to Hawkins original to see the true genius in how AJ incorporated many of his vocal elements [usually omitted from most covers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). The picture she is holding up at the beginning is that of "Screaming" Jay Hawkins who did an eerily comedic rendition of this song in 1956. This is Angelina's tribute to him, toned down from the antics which he performed, not a tribute or emulation of Simone. Angelina may sound similar to another artist at times, but Angelina is Angelina and no other. Thanks to her grandmother's influence, Angelina has been studying and singing jazz since she was literally three years old! Since an early age (somewhere between 8 and 10), multitudes have been calling her the new "Queen of Jazz."

Angelina has started out as a 6 to 7 year old singer better than 99% of the professional singers 4 to 5 times her age. She is one that can do it all no matter the genre ,and it all comes natural to her with very little effort and no struggle at all. Angelina is just the singers singer no matter the age bracket. Where others have had to struggle to get theirs, Angelina was simply born with it.

And I'll change one more word in your vocabulary: "She's CHANNELING..." This word is my preferred one for a reason: she sings so many different styles among songs, always in her own voice with her own characteristics, but 'channeling' seems to be the common thread. She submerges/immerses herself in a song, and ends up deilvering such powerful performances - such as this - that are well-beyond "sounds like" critiques. So I call it "channeling" after that word's most excellent insertion into Ms OffTapLife experience.

I didn't realize this reaction/exposure was fairly deep into your experience with Angelina, including a couple of MILLION MILE video reactions. I wonder how often you're revisiting AJ songs? Do you end up re-listening several or just a few? Or any at all? Idly curious... I rewatch certain reactors and yours matches many favorite points of those: you start bopping along, then 'go still' in an almost-shocked state, then you start again, then go stone again, then back to bopping along. You end the song with a stony countenance, but furrow your chin in intensity, then smiling almost in relief and enjoyment. I suspect just about all AJ fans did this the first time or two or three, as well.

This is one of Angelina's most highly requested videos. It is not a vocal style that shows up in most of her work, but one thing that it really does is show people that this girl is a legit artist. The stuff she's doing here... you can't fake that... that is something that is just in her bones. She was born to sing and this video is one of the strongest examples of that. The first evidence of this video is from March 2015, so she would have just turned 9 a couple months before, but there is no solid evidence of when exactly it was recorded. There is a possibility (or even a likelihood) that she was still 8 at the time.

Just to comment on some themes emerging fro other comments... When Nathan referenced Nina Simone‘s voice he wasn’t talking about the arrangement of the song. He was talking about the influences behind the vocals he was listening to. Yes, this performance was clearly inspired and guided by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ version of the song. But her vocals in this song channel her well known female jazz vocal influences (including Billie Holliday, Etta James and yes, yes Nina Simone) far more than they attempt to imitate Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ voice. While this cover is based on his arrangement of the song and has a similar (but slightly less unhinged) fiery, intense delivery, Nina Simone’s version is sung in a much more somber, traditional blues style. Two very different interpretations of the song. But she’s not trying to imitate SJH here. The bridge/outro at the end feel to me more like Édith Piaf than SJH. It’s kind of like how Million Miles, to me, evokes an image of Amy Winehouse singing an Adele song. 😂 I hope that made some sense. And I hope I didn’t offend anyone with those comparisons. Yes, Angelina is Angelina. She is unique and something truly special as a vocalist (and human being). But she doesn’t exist in a musical vacuum. Every singer is influenced by the music they surrounded themselves with prior to and throughout their growth as a vocalist. I don’t think we have to take Nathan’s comments as literally as Angelina sitting down before the performance and saying “now let me sing me this song in the exact same way that Nina Simone would have sung it in.” When a reactor compares a vocalist’s style to other vocalists, it does not need to be taken as a diminishment of the singer whose vocals are being analyzed. It is not an accusation that the vocalist is an “impersonator” rather than a unique artist. The same kinds of comparisons can be made with pianists, drummers guitarists or any musician. I play the drums. I was heavily “influenced” by Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, Bonham and Neil Peart. Lol. The difference between me and Angelina is it that you can actually recognize her influences in her vocals. My drumming influences, not so much. 🙈 But we all have influences. Heck, Albert Einstein had influences that inspired his work. His famous thought experiments are believed to have been inspired at least in part by a book he read as a child by Aaron Bernstein. Nobody would ever suggest that those influences diminish in any way his greatness as a theoretical physicist. A comparison of one vocalist’s style with others’ is simply a way of understanding and describing that person’s vocals within the context of the author’s own past experience with music. To the extent that the comparisons coincide with the vocalist’s actual influences they are also a way of expressing something, on a deeper level, about that person as an artist. That’s why I tend to let somebody like Nathan, whose knowledge of vocal development, execution and expression are orders of magnitude superior to mine, express his take on the song in the way that makes sense to him and that he and most experts similar to him will tend to use frequently as a means of conveying their impressions. Being compare to Nina Simone is not exactly a terrible thing.

As others have said, Angelina was nine years old when she did this. I wouldn't say she's emulating Screaming Jay Hawkins, but she is doing it in his style. He is the one who wrote the song and recorded it in 1956. There have been dozens of covers by some pretty big name artists, notably Nina Simone and CCR, but this one is special. When she is writing at the beginning, she is making some notes about the arrangement that she (very politely) called her wishes.

Yes, I think she's delivering vocals more reminiscent of Jay Hawkins' original. I've argued that she's reduced his even-first-recordings (1956) back to his original composition, too. He was drunk and slurry after a long day of recording - supposedly this song was his last of the session. Somehow, AJ has distilled his then-theatrics back to a vocal quality that Jay probably never had - ie, "not having that voice" AJ has. I think he'd be quite amazed to hear a song that perhaps was closer to his "in his mind" composition than anyone else delivered.

She does a much better version. Remember she arranges all of her songs and this was arranged by Angelina at 9.2 yrs old! imo This is the best arrangement and delivery of this song including Nina's and definitely better than Jay Hawkins' over the top version. As you view more of her videos you will come to realize that AJ is a true prodigy. I would recommend "Feeling Good" Live on the Stream Gir Tilbake or "Every Time We Say Goodbye" on the roof of a TV station in Oslo both at 10 years old. Angelina is not emulating Nina Simone in this version of the song. She was actually doing an inspired version from screaming Jay Hawkins who was the original singer of the song. Nina Simone came along later. You are not listening to an emulation of anyone, you are listening to a young virtuoso. The style she is singing in is the style she listened to since she was a year and a half old. That was not an emulation that was an interpretation because she had mastered her craft by the time she did this song. She has been a jazz singer since he was six years old. She is a prodigy in every sense of the word, and since she just currently turned 15 last month she is still yet a child prodigy, but also a master.

@@nathanlongwell Nathan- - I guess I should have read down the comments before responding! Ur right-- everyone knows & I should have saved my breath. Thanks! Next time u don't care for someones reaction 2 u or something you've put forward on your channel, it would show some class if u could do it w/out the 'shut-up;' That really was uncalled for.

@@lindathompson3982 next time you don't like someone's reaction, maybe just move along instead of leaving an incredibly rude comment. Anyone who has followed this angel and her reactors any amount of time should know to give reactors time to see her evolution, her many voices, because they will know. Our job as viewers is to spread Angelina love and support reactors as we watch them go on their angelina journey. Rude comments like yours would not be approved of by Angelina. I always try to think that she could possibly see what we say, and want to make her proud. Not only that, but rude comments could also make reactors not want to react to Angelina anymore, and that means less exposure that we all know she deserves. Don't take that from her.

@@petttybettty Whitney, just found this from you. In principal, I agree with supporting reactors. I do not think my response was about 'rude' but about 'exasperation' Still, just as you find. Meanwhile, I have learned since then to write what I think when I just must, & then immediately delete. This way, I'm not exasperated and I'm also not rude! Works for me!!
