Angelina was around her 9th birthday when she created her arrangement for this 1956 Screamin Jay Hawkins classic and then took control of the studio and musicians to deliver a powerful, emotional performance. No musicians in her family and thankfully her family slow walked her career. They signed Angelina to Republic Records (Taylor Swift, etc.) at age 14 but requested she be allowed as normal a childhood as possible. Please read her bio. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on RU-vid. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. *Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Musicians working with Angelina would call her the boss since she knew exactly how she wanted to sing the song and would confidently instruct the musicians. While one could say Angelina was mimicking other artists, there is no doubt she had her own style and created her own arrangements, even at this early age. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition to trim the number of vocalists who passed their audition, and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. - Who is Angelina Jordan - Angelina is a Norwegian born child prodigy in music. She's a singer/ songwriter who's arranged over 180 covers and 6 originals, all since the age of 7. Angelina began singing at 18 months old. At 2, she began teaching herself how to sing, focusing primarily on the jazz masters of decades gone by. These are artists such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Etta James. She's also influenced by Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, and Adele, to name a few. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RU-vid, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

She was on a trip to Iran where her grandmother is from and met a street girl weighing people for money. Angelina sat and talked with the girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind herself (and the world) that there are still children in need. All book proceeds go to charity.

She performed Bohemian Rhapsody cover, her arrangement, on AGT Champions in 2020 at 13. Came in 5th i think. Queen, the band, was so impressed they GAVE her the rights to her arrangement. My thoughts on this performance. I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz," amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at 6 years old, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.” From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.

The competition you refer to is AGT, Champions where she sang Bohemian Rhapsody, winning a Golden Buzzer. The way she got to the champions competition was by invitation, following her win of Norway's Got Talent when she was 7 to 8. This song was done a year later, when she was 9. This is AJ's own arrangement and selection. Her family is not musical but her grandmother played a lot of jazz records. AJ fell in love with Billie Holiday and was walking around with a tablet playing songs she selected when she was 2 to 3. However, she began singing when she was 18 months old and was found singing Whitney Houston in her crib, all caught on video. She was in tune but the words were a bit mumbled, after all, English is like her third language, being Norwegian with Swedish, Japanese and Persian grandparents.

The driving force behind Angelina is Angelina herself. At age 6 she had been pestering her parents to participate in Noway Got Talent (NGT), but was not allowed to do so before she turned 7 (NGT rules, I believe). It was her maternal grandmother that introduced her to the old jazz classics, and apparently her favorite artists are people like Billie Holiday and Etta James etc. If you like this kind of music, you are in for a treat! She saw Screamin' Jay Hawkins version of his song .. and she was blown away by it and decided she wanted to do her own version. (That was Screamin' Jay on the candle at the first of the video.) Most of her covers are rearranged by her. You have probably heard that she is a child prodigy and is considered a musical genius. She knows exactly what she wants and has her way of getting that to happen. The band in this song called her "the boss" but loved her because she knew what she wanted and would ask for it with interest and the musicians were amazed by her choices in the arrangement and ended up quite taken by her. They are an extraordinary group of musicians anyway so playing for a nine year old seemed odd initially but they had nothing but great things to say about her after. Her grandmother loved jazz .. still does .. and as an infant Angelina responded to jazz very intensely .. and certain singers. Her very favorite was always Billie Holiday .. and she herself has said that there would be no Angelina Jordan if it wasn't for Billie Holiday. Her grandmother, a child prodigy herself and a well-known artist and writer/poet, recognized Angelina's awareness and intelligence and set her up with RU-vid .. showing her how to pull up the different artists. This child would listen to songs and repeat parts of the song over and over and over and then she would try to sound like that. She would work on songs she liked for a surprising amount of time in full focus. In my opinion, this is what makes her so strong and so special .. because she actually taught herself to sing .. from the inside out .. figuring out where certain sounds came from in her throat or chest etc.. Angie noted that it was cold and the girl's feet were cut. She talked with her and found she was an orphan helping to support her family. First recorded singing at eighteen months of age. At two going on three she is seen scrolling through RU-vid looking for Jazz artists to listen to for hours each day. At three tells her Mother she wants to sing on that Simon show. (Which she does at thirteen) At four she enters school and in after school program is taking music, piano, violin and flute. At five she is speaking three languages, Norwegian, Persian and English. She is reading English at a high level. At five she is studying music theory learning to deconstruct and rearranging songs to her liking. At five she tells her Mother she wants to sing at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert ( which she does at eight) At five she try’s to audition for Norway’s Got Talent , but is told she is too young and must be seven. At six while living in the Middle East, while walking with her Mother and Grandmother, she meets an orphaned child on the street. She spends around forty five minutes talking with girl. It is a cold day and while Mother and Grandmother wait, she takes off her shoes and gives them to the shoeless girl. Upon arriving home she records the encounter in her diary. This is where her legend begins. At seven she auditions for Norway’s Got Talent. At eight she wins Norway’s Got Talent. At eight and nine she tour’s the world singing at charity events for children and the improvised. At nine she publishes her book titled “Between Two Harts “ telling the story of why she sings on stage in her bare feet, becoming the youngest published author in Norwegian history. Angelina’s recordings have very little post production, if any. She most often records a song in one take, and many times the first time she has sung the song. NO AJ is not pushed to do anything, actually she had to be restrained from doing her passion, her family and parents have protected her in the best way while letting her have a life both as a kid, but a world renowned star at the same time. It is just now at 17 after finishing highschool has AJ got the green light to devour the world over. She was born singing and everyday has worked hard on her craft. Only musician in the family, her grandmother an Iranian child prodigy herself, much like Angelina. She was awarded Norways youngest published author at 9. Her maturity, smarts, heart, voice are all beyond her years and most of humanity. She works 6 days week, 6 hours a day doing what she loves and it show. With AJ she is the real deal. Besides she has an Army of Angels at her side. Glad to see your willingness to check out more, all your questions were valid as most would be cautious as to think what your witnessed was real. Although the video says 6 years ago on RU-vid, it was actually recorded about March 2015 so actually over 8 years old. It wasn't posted until about a year and a half later however. Also, the time of release on RU-vid videos can be a little misleading. A video could have been released 4 years and 364 days ago but it will say 4 years ago. The next day it will change to 5 years.

Even at this young age, the band members affectionately refer to her as "The Boss". While you can't go wrong with any of her performances - in order to better understand her musical roots, I highly recommend going back to her Norway Got Talent audition singing the Billie Holiday classic Gloomy Sunday - at age 7. (Please be sure to select a video with English subtitles - because even though Angelina will be singing in English, the narrator & judges will be speaking Norwegian.) Thank you. Great first reaction to Angelina. And I know that I will be seeing you again, because you obviously got her. She was 9 years 2 months old, which is actually impossible to understand. I have been following her for 10 years now, ever since she entered Norway's Got Talent at age 7 (she won the whole competition with 46% of the total votes), and now at age 17 she is already IMO the best female singer in the world. I'm looking very much forward to future reactions to her. She will keep blowing your mind each and every time you hear her. And that comes with a guarantee. No parents.....just Angelina. Her grandmother is a huge blue/jazz connoisseur. Mom and dad are not really musically inclined and even tried to slow her down just a tad. She does all of her arrangements.

AJ started studio recordings at age 6 which her very first time very first song and very first take she only messed up one line,,,, but you also have to remember she is 6 singing in her 3rd language she is from Norway, look up "I WHO HAVE NOTHING" and watch a 6year old jump for joy when she hits her note,,,, at 7 she went on TV at 8 she won NGT2014 then she did this arrangement, lyrics and band wishes she hand write for the band to follow,, then at age 10 most of her fans see her professional life take off ,, She did many unbelievable songs from 10 -12 .. At 13 YEARS OLD she graced the United States by entering AGT2020 even though politics kept her from being allowed to win, both partys felt it was best for each to allow her to sing 3 performances. Her First performance was her own version of Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, it was so good that Queen allowed her the rights to her version of their song.. so please make time for our Barefoot Princess and get ready for our Angel with a 1000 voices.... I don't think you will regret it !!

It’s impossible to explain how good Angelina is. You just have to start listening. Yes, she arranged this at 9 years old. She covers many different genres as authentically as this. I’m older than you, and Angelina is the best singer I’ve ever heard. Second place is not close. You could throw darts at her extensive song list and you’d be impressed with anything that came up. You’ll gets lots of requests for her cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, at 13, on Americas Got Talent. Go for it. Again, it’s her arrangement, and it will stun you that Angelina can take an iconic song, make it completely her own, but show great respect for the original. She’s a combination of musical genius and a voice that’s once in a lifetime. Queen was so impressed that they gave her the copyright to her version.
