She is different from everyone else in that she learned jazz singing as she learned to speak her native language(s) so the accents, timing, all of it are native to her and as natural as speaking because there is no difference to her, just another of her native languages.

To me, the latest performance is the accomplishment of what she really wanted to do back then, what she was hearing in her mind but could quite do just yet. Now it's just flawless and powerful.

At the beginning of my career in stage sound engineering i had the privilege to work for The International Montreal Jazz Festival and was lucky to watch Ella Fitzgerald , Sarah Vaughan and Tony Bennett in early 80's from backstage, they were masters with microphones. Once again thanks for taking my suggestions. My one disappointment from the 16 year old version is that it’s not live. IMO it’s her finest recording showing off everything she can do vocally. It’s simply beautiful to listen to. But there is just something so magical about young Angelina. She puts her heart and soul into everything she sings. She gets into the character of every song. I don’t think it’s intentional. It’s just who she is. Just like all these cool things you and other vocal coaches notice about her vocal techniques. I don’t believe she is ever thinking about what she needs to do to make a certain sound come out. It just happens, like breathing to the rest of us.

Of all the thousands of artists who have performed this track, almost no one does that beginning part ( in the first video). I’m glad you didn’t feel the need to compare the two versions. I have loved the earlier one for years. Of course her voice is stronger and more resonant now, but Angelina’s younger performances stand on their own as the best we could ever hear from a 10 year old-or younger. The current version shows, I think, an extraordinary jazz voice that combines her unique phrasing with classic elements from the golden age of jazz singing. These two songs fit right in the cloud of my 30 or 40 Angelina favorites. The earlier version has a special place for me though because it’s so raw and unprocessed. Ten year old Angelina on her chair, so happy to perform for us, singing her heart out in one glorious take.

Her Melismas (run's) are a part of her... Of COURSE she's going to sound better, but a young age she knew in her mind what she wanted to do . She went to a special school, the Oslo Waldorf School, that adds music and arts to the courses. She was taught how to take the music and remake it, taught to play 5 instruments, and how to arrange. That is were she was 6, in the studio, that was her teacher in the video.

I love how you said it makes you appreciate the 10 year old version even more. At 10 she was still trying the same slides and runs, it was all already in her. She has really begun to polish her craft.

I love both of these versions along with her 9 yo live version with piano & sax backing. To me the 10 yo & 16 yo versions are totally different. The former is the best child version ever, but the latter is absolute perfection & better than any legendary performance today or in the past, male or female, IMO. As far as I'm concerned, Angelina now owns this American jazz standard!!! It's also my current favorite performance by Angelina, I just wish we could see her performing it.

Yes, she has matured and improved technicaly, but the early version hits me harder. More jazz, less polished and more heartfelt. Love them both.

Her Mom wanted to keep this "young," so the song plays under a daydreaming teenager. It sounds very grown up and sultry to me. Her Mom is rightly being protective. You should know that recently AJ sang for Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffatt. She did "I Have Nothing"--the entire song--sitting in the Lotus meditation position. Spine straight, so room for lung and diaphragm, but still. Who sings that song sitting in a chair, let alone in that position? KLINT did that reaction and I have no idea where that video is housed. ---- Angelina had the tremendous advantage of going to school in Norway plus, per her mom (Sara Astar), Angelina started singing at age 1 1/2 years old, loved jazz, and sang all the time ---- Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School. It is an integrated primary, middle and high school with around 550 pupils. The school is considered one of the most prestigious schools in Norway. The arts play a major role in the Waldorf's curriculum and the activities surrounding the school. The Oslo Waldorf School includes a professionally equipped theater hall. Due to its long waiting lists, pupils are often enrolled shortly after birth to attend the school ---- Angelina participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where she received piano lessons and possibly some very basic vocal lessons. No attempt was made to change her style as that is not a good thing to do at any age unless one is hurting one's voice. In addition to singing and playing the piano, she plays violin, guitar and flute, and also paints. Unlike the US, the Norwegian system of extracurricular schools of music and performing arts (SMPA) is mandated by law. These schools are designed to reach all children and youth aged 6 to 15 in Norway. Not only because of her fantastic voice and interpretive skills but because we truly see the transition from a sweet young child into an accomplished artist and back again to the beautiful young person she is. And, btw, whoever have you heard sing the intro to the song? Her 16 year old version in a word, was magnificent and let's us know her path, her journey, is continuing just as we hoped it would, to bring us joy, hope and happiness and a warmth in our heart in the form of love and we will most definitely express our love to her by being the best we can be as human beings, a desire which means so much to her.
