I'm a 62 year old music lover. For over 40 years, I've continuously held that Ella and Whitney were the two greatest... it's shocking, to think a 15 year old, could cause me real doubt now. Thank you for sharing Angelina's works of art.

Singing has an emotional component to it that some singers can bring forth so as to enter the human soul. That is what Angelina has in 'spades' when you realize how many different genres she performs, bringing forth that emotional component seemingly whenever she wants to. She is the most versatile singer of excellence I have ever heard. Others can do some genres very well, but only Angelina does all of them........and that is the edge she has on all other excellent singers.

Angelina is one of the most addictive singers I have ever listened to, & one of the very few, that can pull you right into the song, making you feel, every word, every note, & every emotion. ❤️💙 I always have this feeling that Angelina is not only channeling some of these late great singers, but that they also pass through her, when she is singing their song ❤️💙 A rare beauty, in every sense of the word ❤️💙 Loved your reaction, & you can gather from my comment, that Angelina would be my preferred listening tone........it's all preference & how we hear the music, & Angelina just touches the emotions like nobody else can!

Another thought provoking analysis of Angelina’s amazing talent. I’d never heard Angelina and Whitney back to back before. I always thought Angelina did a very good job on this, but she was really staring on the high notes. After hearing them back to back I really enjoy Angelina’s version slightly better. If you factor in the age difference it is no contest. Will Angelina be able to do this better when she is 29, only time and nature can decide. Thanks again for your devotion to Angelina.

Voice coaches on youtube always said a maturing voice will be moving towards the lower end of the register. Which would make it harder to hit those high notes that are on the edge of her range now. But we'll see.

@@yves2932, I'm not a vocal coach, so I know nothing about this, and am genuinely curious as to when a voice matures. Had Whitney's voice moved to the lower end of the register before she recorded this song and made it such a hit at the age of 28, or does that move happen later in life? Has Angelina already reached her peak, after just turning 13 in this video, or does her voice have at least 15 years to get better? I am curious, because I'm old, and would like to know if she will get so much better than she is now, in my lifetime, or have I heard the best from her in her first 7 years.

In my opinion the difference between Angelina and other polished and professional singers - the reason we cry when Angelina sings, but remain dry eyed when we hear another singing the same song is because those singers are performing...they are SINGING the song, but Angelina is LIVING the song...lyrics, meaning, melody, and all.

Alan, I love what you are doing with your channel. I have been listening to Angelina for almost a year. I am an old sax player and lover of Jazz. I do not have the words to describe fully what happens to me when she sings, but I want you to notice her when she does a song really well. She giggles slightly to herself at the end of the song as if she is pleased with her performance and it made her giddy. I have known a psychic as a friend. The ability to connect to other people through time and space does happen. Angelina's ability to move people emotionally may be in that realm. It almost seems that Angelina connects with the song writer's thoughts & emotions when the song was written, connects with the artist's talents she covers and then channels all of that through her with her own style in a uniquely pleasing way. Her singing penetrates like warm, radiant sunlight on a cool morning and it feels good. Wayne

At some point however I think people can begin to come to some agreement about a group of superstars. You touched on 2, Elvis and Whitney. There are others, Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury for instance. I believe Angelina over time will join this pantheon of all time greats. Thanks again, Alan. It IS great fun! I agree with the assessment of who is better. It's taste and connection. Jesse doesn't really connect with me but she does some stuff at the high end that I like a lot. Ariana is exceptional and I like her a lot, but her version of the song here is less impactful than the others for me. This is not my favorite Whitney version. Still, I think Whitney is great. Angelina is the only one of the four that I feel a connection to. I feel more from Angelina's songs than from others (generally speaking-- there are a few outliers). I don't know that I've read how much or how often music was played in the house. I have only read that granny did introduce Angelina to jazz and played it around her. Angelina's aptitude and desire are key. Some reactors point out a few flaws in Angelina's performance. Even with them, I like her version as much (if not better) than my favorite Whitney version and I recognize that at 13 her voice is not fully mature so those flaws may fade if Angelina continues to sing this song 5-10 years from now. Still, I choose to listen to Angelina and I feel a greater emotional response to her version and to her singing, in general, than I do others...even the recognized "great" ones. Angelina's on her way to achieving her destiny.

But taking that further, how fortunate we were that all of that was lavished on a child who was born with incredible musical abilities. She was blessed and we are blessed.

My impression is that she was a lot on her own in deciding what to do with her music, she also choose all the songs herself. Sometimes having no teacher telling you what to do can create a broader understanding of the possibilities and make you more prone to develop an ability to just puzzle it out until you're satisfied with it. Speaking from my totally different profession I believe that can help a lot in developing confidence.
@thealanpapier

@@yves2932 My impression is that lack of confidence was/is never an issue for AJ. She has this quiet confidence you barely need to scratch the surface to see. She is just very self possessed. When you place a child on stage in front of thousands of people there is a natural tendency to be fearful or nervous, regardless how well you sing or how natural it comes to you. Angelina has confidence which helps, but i think it's her ability to detach herself from her surroundings and enter her inner world where only she and her music exist.

Thank you, Alan, for a well-presented program. I have been following Angie for several years now, have seen all that she has done and many, many reactions, most worthless. Yours, however, are very well thought out and offer new insights to the phenomenon called Angelina. I have my own ways of describing her amazing abilities. The one I think most represents the difference between her and other singers is that she is 3D vs. their 2D - she brings another dimension to a song that is endearing and intimate and heart-warming and on and on. We just do not possess a word to describe it. Angie has said that she goes to s special, good-feeling place when she sings and you can see her go there a few seconds before she opens her mouth. While she sings she is not fully in our world, her eyes close and she selects from her toolbag of hundreds of voices, ornaments, pitches, breathing, timing, back phrasing and so forth, in just the right way to present each song beautifully. I would have to say that is pure genius, but it wouldn't work if she did not have an unique and gorgeous voice. When I listened to the three other performers in your video, they sang well, and in their own style, but were not interesting, once you compare them to Angelina. That is why I can listen to the same songs from Angie time and time again and never be bored. And, each time I discover something new. She is an amazing gift to humanity.

Alan. Totally agree that Angelina was listening to music while still in the womb. Forming words at eighteen months let alone having tone awareness and expressing it is barely comprehensible. Scrolling through RU-vid looking for Jazz artists at two through three is a wonderment. She must have been receiving contentment from the pursuit. She obviously learned from her mother and grandmother the use of a phone or tablet and quickly learned the direction she wished to pursue. What three year old tells her mother she wants to sing for Simon Cowell. How does a five year old acquire the life values she displays at six. Language skills and abilities by five and six are another discussion. Wish that we could conduct some interviews and research as to when. Regards Sir please continue.

Each of her vocal opera (I don't know whether to call them songs) is so absolutely and profoundly full of passion, emotion, sensitivity, with those personal and peculiar characteristics, that it's not possible to homologate it, it's her and only her and in this way she leaves you a sign in the soul, which you cannot erase. Whitney has an incomparable and wonderful vocal ability, but in this version of the song she is perhaps a bit too acting and is less soft and smooth. Thanks, great job !

Four amazing renditions of Whitney Houston's iconoc song. Why do I tear up at only one of the four cover's performances, the original one included? Like you say, Alan, it is subjective, and each artist sings the song beautifully. It is not at all, for me, the irrelevant and unfair question of who sings it better, but of who touched my trembling soul more than the other three. My answer is inspired by Nikola Tesla's work and can be, humbly, formulated in the following terms: Since a piece of music, for instance, could be interpreted as a sequence of vibrational sound frequency, the one that would correspond best to the particular vibrational frequency of my soul would affect me more. Angelina's own vocal vibrational frequency must obviously correspond to mine, since it is when she sings that song here that my whole being is touched, chills and goosebumps occurred, and my lacrymal glands are reacting to her particular vocal vibrational sound frequency. Does it make sense? I love, love your expression " anthem of the soul", the word anthem, that I would apply also to Angelina' original Oslo, describing poetically the emotional charge that I feel when she sings it.

A very well done and most interesting analysis with superb analogies. I completely agree with the vast majority of what you say. With regard to the development of her talent during her early childhood, I was wondering if you have considered the impact of her socioeconomic environment. We know that many of the artistic geniuses of history were greatly assisted by materially 'easy' childhoods, and ongoing 'patronage', especially during the Renaissance. It removes pressures and allows additional development time that more restrictive environments don't. From videos I have seen of her childhood, I suspect that may have been a factor with Angelina as well. Just a thought.

Norway is a very affluent country. They have a lot of land, few people and reserves of oil. AJ grew up very comfortably- at least upper middle class. Her dad works for an Iranian oil company. So the socioeconomic certainly didn't hold her back. And all the stars were aligned when she was born. And I also believe she has a different emotional construct than almost anyone else to do what she does. I will be discussing that in an upcoming video.

That is in no way any sort of judgement, but it does add weight to my theory. Regarding her emotional construct, it is interesting to see her reactions in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nxu0thekm-M.html where she is not yet certain she can do what she wants to, but is delighted when she finds she can. Thank you, Alan, for another of your intelligent and insightful analyses of Angelina's immense talent. Your approach is a breath of fresh air from the myriad "Wow! Amazing! How old is she?" reactors out there. May I offer a few observations (not criticisms) of my own? While the video of Whitney you used was wonderful, I wish you had used the official movie soundtrack video. It would have shown more of a correlation between Whitney and Angelina. With both using the same backing track, it would have made it easier to compare and contrast their performances. Not for competitive purposes, mind you. I hate when people try to turn the arts into a sporting competition. In listening to both of them, it never escapes me that Whitney did hers at age 29 in a major recording company studio with all the bells and whistles (autotune, mixing, compression, multiple takes, etc.), while Angelina, at age 13, did hers in one take in a small studio or a room in her home. That to me is astounding. Whitney's performance is "perfect" because of what I mentioned before, while, to my ear, Angelina's had two very minor flaws - intonation at the end of the second verse and a loss of breath support on one word at the beginning of the second chorus. Maybe she is human after all! I loved your analogies between chess and baseball to give perspective to Angelina's unique and immense abilities. Thanks again. Looking forward to your next in-depth video!

I really don’t think belting is her thing and she was definitely at the edge of her upper range there. But this was a tribute to Whitney from Angie. The interesting thing about Angie versus a lot of talented young singers is that neither of her parents are musicians or singers. Singers like Haley Reinhart grew up with music. Haley recently dropped a video with her singing and dad playing guitar. It is excellent. Little 7 year old Claire Crosby has two musical parents that influence her greatly. This song was not composed by the artist singing it ,it was written by David foster and Linda Thompson . Whitney made it famous , and every one thinks she owns it , which she did for a long time, until along came Angelina Jordan a 12 year old girl from Norway who has blown everyone else out to the game ,with her tone, smoothness , quality of voice, and a emotional content unmatched by anyone today, of seasoned singers over three times her age. No one singer can claim ownership of this song ,but Angelina to date is the master of this song at only a 12 year old girl. Whitney did a great job and held the trophy per say, for many years, however. compared to the now "Barefoot Queen of Song" Whitney's versions are a bit choppy ,where as Angelina is as smooth as velvet with the lyrics, and her range is ever as impressive as Whitney's ever was. I have to now hand the trophy over to Angelina , until some one else comes along and puts more emotion and tone in this song which seems to be quite an impossible task to accomplish.

Angelina's rendition sings the entire song seated for 4.52 minutes in one take with all the heaviest belts of the highest notes in the last 50 seconds. Ariana Grande's rendition is 2.30 minutes, cutting out the last belts. Whitney's live rendition has her taking breathing breaks in the last minute to complete. These are the basic facts.
@yves2932
@yves2932 3 года назад
I don't think her using "I love singing" as a kind of mission statement has neccesarily to be seen as an understatement. We've all witnessed her idea of "singing" is a bit different and broader than usual. Her covers are true to the essence of the original and you can instantly recognice the original and often even the artists voice she's covering. Yet she's not trying to create a duplicate. She's always adding her own twist on it and makes it her own. The first two artist you showed did a good copy, which is quite an achievement for this very hard song. But they dont do much more in my opinion. The consensus on expectations seems to be that covering Whitney can only end up as a miserable fail or something great. But in most cases a miserable fail. You have to be extremly good not to mess it up so much that it sounds horrible. And those select few that are that good are usually good enough to make it great. The reaction of the judges on germany's "Got Talent" variant DSDS was a vivid example of that. "I'll be singing Whitney Housten". "Are you sure? Oh no, I know how that will end. (Everyone will will hate me again for ripping a cute girl to shreds) Don't you have an alternate song? PLEASE!!!" Yes we have our own Simon character. The idea of an association of music with beeing cuddled, nurtured, loved is an interesting thought. You can associate feelings to a taste or sound, it's called a pavlov reflex. I once had unintentionally trained myself to one. So I can confirm it works in real life. I was always wondering how she can be void of stage fright. Some people cant feel physical pain due to some defect. Could it be something similar? That would be probably the only mental defect some people would love to have. But then again you can tell, she's not frightened but also not completly comfortable at her first apearances and grows more confident. That makes that idea implausible.

👩🏻🎤🎵🌎⭐️🇳🇴❤️ I've always thought that this was an utterly remarkable performance by a 13-year-old Angelina. Since we're talking about whether or not aesthetic judgments are subjective, I will just point out that if they are (and I'm not making a claim here one way or the other) that means not only that it would be wrong to say that Whitney is better than Angelina, or that Angelina is better than Whitney, but it also means that it would be wrong to say that either of them is better than Jessie J or Ariana Grande. In fact, it means that it would be wrong to say that Whitney is any better than my next door neighbor. If aesthetic judgments are subjective then everyone is on a par with everyone.

To address something you said at the very end: personally, I see Angelina's early development as a singer as being more comparable to her learning to speak than to her "growing her arms". Children learn to speak "naturally", yes, but it takes some effort. They may start out simply "babbling" and trying to imitate sounds that they hear, but they also are compelled to communicate needs and desires, and they get frustrated when they cannot do so effectively (which is why many parents opt to use sign language as a kind of bridge between the pre-verbal stage and speech, since that seems to make it easier for the child to communicate). IOW, children have an _urge_ to communicate; they don't just "happen to" start communicating at some point "just because" (the way an arm grows "just because" the child is growing up). Now, I don't know if there is in Angelina's early singing experiences an analog of the frustration I mentioned (maybe not until later, when she found she wasn't good enough for her own liking), but the video of her at 18 months is particularly fascinating because it (IMO) raises profound questions related to the other things I was talking about: imitation, motivation, and communication. When baby Angelina threw her head back and (eventually) closed her eyes as she sang, was she imitating other singers she had seen? Was she imitating Whitney? (I don't think so. Not in the music video for this song, anyway. Although Whitney closes her eyes a few times, she doesn't do it at that point in the song, nor does she ever throw her head back the way Angelina does.) Or was she doing it "naturally"? Was she "singing it with feeling" because she was _actually experiencing_ a feeling deep inside as she sang - something she would later describe as being taken to "another world"? (Could this have been the first time she caught a brief glimpse of that world?) And, assuming she was singing with "genuine feeling", was she perhaps even trying to _communicate_ that feeling through her singing? Is that even _possible_ for an 18-month-old? I don't know the answer to these questions, but the thought that the answer to some of the latter ones might be "yes"… I mean… I… I just don't know. (BTW, for comparison, here's a short clip of Claire Crosby at 19 months, throwing her head back as she sings along with "In Summer" from _Frozen_ : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-76Fwo2OjWYk.htmlm23s The full video contains many other clips of her singing before she was 3, starting at 10 months [off-camera]. I wish we had this much early stuff of Angelina singing. There's gotta a lot be more we haven't seen…)

Hi Donald, Your comment is much too long and articulate for me not to reply. We broadly agree about everything. I don't believe in splitting hairs- but normally you would be right- singing would be an extension of a child learning a language. But all the evidence points to AJ being attuned to music well before she was verbal. The image of 'growing her arms' was just a way to express the organic and inevitable nature of her growing to be a singer. Some things are hard to know and we can only 'conjecture'. I agree that the closed eyes takes her to another world. Maybe it also allows her 110% focus on the music with no visual distraction. What I haven't expressed explicitly (which I should have)- and which none of us can remember- is the world of feeling age 6 months, 12 months, 18 months. The neurology is not yet developed enough to filter the desirable from the undesirable. Everything is taken in- for better or worse. Just look at the family dog- all emotion right on the surface all the time. So when these young babies are exposed to life, they are a total sponge. All parents take note!! I had a look at the Clare Crosby video. It reinforces my view that early development is a massive influence Cheers AP

@@thealanpapier Hey Alan,thanks for your mission to explain and bring the music of Angelina out to a broader public,and I must say its very interesting at least to listening to your explanation of why you think Angelina is the great artist that thousand of her fans from all around the world can agree too,and by the way,it's rare to find someone speaking english in a way that is so easy to understand for me as a foreigner.And here is my opinion about Angelina.Here she is 13 years of age,and she is connecting to you the listener in a way that no one else can,she emote and she is an expert to bring that emotion to the listener,in a way she is not only singing to your ears,but to your soul as well,and many who comment are calling her a doctor becauce her singing has a special effect on many,they are relaxing and starts to heal.This effect she had on listeners when she was 12,11,10,9,8,7,and may be even when she was six.Angelina said early that to her,singing was as important as breathing,and she wanted to be a superstar and sing to the whole world.I have seen a video with an american shaman where he tells that in his opinion Angelina is a cosmic avatar,and I am starting to believe it myself.So IMO she is a cosmic avatar brought to this earth on a mission in this turbulent time in the history of the human race.She is here giving out love through her singing an her example in her way of interacting with other people,example her giving away her shoes when six, giving away the money she won winning Norway got talent,an many charety events where she has been singing,raicing 21 millon euros,by her impact the world will be a better place and start to heal,in the same way people listening to her music are relaxing and if you have had a bad day listening to here singing,go right from her soul to your soul,and you start to heal.By the way her whole name is Angelina Jordan Astar,Jordan in the scandinavian languages are derived from the earth,so her name means an angel and a star from the earth.A conscidence,I do'nt think so,she is fulfilling her destiny,a destiny that was her plan from before she was born.If you read some spiritual litterature,many says that souls reincarnate together acording to plan,an therefore know beforehand who your parents would be,and the parents know who their baby will be,hence the appropriate name given to Angelina by her parents.

But, I think you picked a version from Whitney that doesn't really give a good one-to-one comparison. That was a 1994 BIG theatrical concert production, with all sorts of added flourishes and runs not present in her original version. Good fun with your analogies, Alan. Problem is they don't really work. With a marathon we have a measurement---Time. The winner has the fastest time, and I can compare others by looking at their time. Can't argue with that. With chess we have a winner. It's not up for discussion. Checkmate! But with singing, we have to make a judgement, and the standard varies. What you like I might not, and vice versa. So there's all this room for disagreement---Not with running, and Not with chess. See how the analogy breaks down. And you picked a version of Whitney's that is quite different than the others are performing, so comparison is very difficult. She's playing with the melody to entertain the crowd and to show off a little, and because she's Whitney and it's her song, she can do that. But while I love the original by Whitney, I didn't really care for this version. Some people will refuse to make a negative judgment because it's Whitney, and they assume that if she's singing it, well, it must be great. Which again shows how the analogies you used just don't work. There is no judgment with running---fastest time wins; with chess---checkmate. But with singing it's all about taste; and while you might believe that Whitney and Angelina are superior on this song, someone else might not. See the problem? For a Great comparison between Angelina and Whitney, Philip at pa1189j has created an incredible mashup of the two of them singing this song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iByyAzKCvFg.html It is simply Terrific! But again, it allows the listener to make a Judgment. Because there is no Standard for what is Best, so there can Not be an indisputable Winner, or a measurement to determine the difference between them---it comes down to "What Did You Like the Best"? So with that in mind, and ranking the ones that you chose, here's my ranking: 1st---Angelina; 2nd---Jesse Jay; 3rd---Whitney; and 4th---Ariana. And others will have completely different rankings because this is all a matter taste. Thanks for putting this all together, Alan. Until next time. 😊💕💕

Point taken. I was not making the point across the 3 human endeavours- marathon, chess and singing. I was making the point that with these, and virtually every other field, there is a huge range of ability. Whether these abilities can be 'measured' is almost incidental. Appreciation of music is subjective; the other 2 are not- but it is the range of ability which is fascinating The publishing of this video was delayed for 10 days because I was trying to sort out copyright claims. This was not my first choice for WH version. In the end, I was lucky to find any version that I could publish.

Actually, we'll find out that Grandma is the one we have to thank a lot. All that Jazz stuff AJ was exposed to even before the birth was due to Grandma's good taste in music. Grandma seems to be still a huge influcence in the way AJ sings and chooses the songs.
