The lagoon bulkhead issue is no longer in question as to whether it is a design flaw or not. 63 lagoon 450's have reported damaged bulkheads, anywhere from bending, to completely snapped. This video shows the behind the scenes footage between Colin and Lagoon, and the struggles amongst confused Lagoon owners.
This series will show never before seen footage of how we straightened and strengthened a 45ft production catamaran, in order to be able to complete a circumnavigation. Located in Linton bay, in Panama, we meet our fair share of challenges trying to rebuild this boat from the bulkheads up...

As one of the quiet Lagoon 450f owners in the background, I can tell you that my wife and I are super appreciative that you have been running this series on RU-vid. Please continue to do so for the 100's of owners that are diligently following you, not for the three jackass trolls that are trying to get you to stop. We have inspected our vessel and our 2016 is not nearly as bad as some of the others you have shown. But we are showing beginning signs of bending bulkheads that will only get worse over time. It is because of you that we are able to monitor this situation and that my family will be kept safe. FYI, our boat has been pampered like a new born baby since it was delivered from Lagoon. No chartering, no hurricanes, no running aground, always professional riggers and hauled twice by the best in the country. If our boat, that has been so gently used, is showing issues, I can't imagine what is happening to the boats that are being put through normal sailing use. We are part of the 450 facebook groups and have turned all our findings into Lagoon. I am very much hoping Lagoon steps up and helps us re-support these bulkheads, as the boat is less then 5 years old when we reported these problems to them. Fingers crossed they will do the right thing, as we absolutely love our boat... Haters are always going to hate... Thank you again for protecting all the 450 owners. -Jimmy Sprague

Jimmy, I've been following Colin & Co.; carefully observing their repairs; following their discovery of issues and maladies. As I listen to Colin speak in this video, I'm reflecting on the sequence of events leading to his discoveries and trying to reconcile them with Lagoon's rational: Cracked bulkhead is caused by (among other things) over-tension of the rig. OK, great. So; what did Colin first discover during installation of the rig? It became loose overnight - its cause...we've seen over a period of weeks. It seems to me (a casual observer / non-boat owner with no sea-legs to stand on) that if Lagoon owners, like you, are completely unaware of the bulkhead issue, they may one day wake up to discover their rig is loose and naturally tighten it, all-the-while being unaware of the root cause of the problem. As such, who's to say which came first, the chicken or the egg -- the cracked bulkhead or rigging? Let's say the same unaware boat owner exclusively engages professional riggers, as you have. Are they aware of the bulkhead issue? Anyhow, just some thoughts from the Peanut Gallery. :-) ~ nod to the Howdie Doody TV show.

I wonder if given the form and shape of the cabins if you cold inject epoxy and let it set up while on the hard? would this not also bulletproof the boat? If the bulkheads are still intact it looks like you could set the boat to perfect speck on the hard and simply fill in the gaps with re-enforcement? just thinking out loud so to speak... Imagine all that epoxy sealing and binding 2 or 3 inches thick pouring it in in segments like layers of concrete...would that itself not add decades of service?

@@Search4TruthReality Not that what you describe couldn't be what happened in many cases, but it's not really a chicken and egg thing, the failure started with the bulkhead, lose rigging is merely a symptom of the problem no matter which way you slice it. Also, technically, if you are tightening the rigging because it's under-tensioned, you're not over-tensioning it... well, unless you tension it higher than the factory spec. It also seems like that was a common thing there would be owners asking why their rig is always going loose.

Your integrity and ethics are unquestionable. That has been clear from the day you started the revival of Parlay. Your willingness to risk yourself to assist others sets a moral standard that Lagoon would be wise to emulate. Anyone questioning your character, intentions or knowledge of this situation is misguided or just extremely frightened of losing something themselves. Being a Patreon and having “behind the scenes” information of the issues before you publicly disclosed them supports the honesty of everything you have said and done. I commend your actions in bringing this situation to the public’s attention and the risks you have taken to do the right thing.

Rat J - you are pathetic. Put yourself in his position and think how would he feel if he had said nothing then several months from now he learned of someone ( or multiple people) died as a result of these issues. It is very possible during a crossing that if one of these un-repaired boats gets caught in rough weather it could structurally fail. That could be catastrophic. He has a morale as well as possibly a legal reason to make other owners aware of this issue. History is full of situations where people have paid the ultimate price because no one was willing to stand up and do or say something about an obvious dangerous situation.

In all there are at least 100 and then another 900 that haven't checked yet. It blows my mind how some Lagoon owners are still defending Lagoon to the death. I've been on the frontline dealing with Lagoon (dealt with 3 differents dealers and the head of US Sales) and their strategy is the same--shift blame, make excuses, and empty promises. The only time I hear from them is when I make a video about my broken bulkheads--otherwise it's complete radio silence.

They have not been fooled. That's not fair. Lagoon clearly are finding out about this along with everyone else. They are not going to rush in. They are going calculate the best and most professional way forward. I would be very surprised if they even have the answer yet. There will be 3 possible outcomes deny and fight... not really a winner as they probably want to stay in business and keep their reputation. A recall... which is not something they are going to rush into as even the oldest and most damaged boats are still afloat. A compensation package. Like this is what you do and we will pay x amount as that is the cheapest we can do it for. Then again they may go for a mix like a recall on everything less than 5 years old. Insurance and liability will play a big part in the decision. I have seen this in the automotive world a few times and it never really happens the way you would expect with big manufacturers. Here's what I think will happen from a legal standpoint... Lagoon talked to their lawyers- Lawyers said for Lagoon to deny everything and also don't give tips for repairs and if they did then they are admitting a flaw and will pretty much open the case for lawsuits. It sucks but if they started helping people with repair instructions many out there will use that to sue unfortunately. Lagoon is stuck between a rock and hard place but I'm pretty sure they will deny/ignore and let everyone deal with it on their own so hopefully storm will blow over or future lawsuits will drag out for years. Best way out for Lagoon IMO is hire/pay these two guys couple million to travel the world and repair/reinforce all these other Laogoon boats and have all owners sign paperwork saying that Lagoon will not be liable for any future damages.

Lagoon is at a cross road , if they chose to ignore this they will never recover. The sailing community has a very long memory and a good reputation can and will disappear in a moment. Lagoon needs to document the changes in the production process showing the new bulkhead design so new owners can be confident and then as Colin points out assist the current owners as necessary to make them whole and protect the value of the 1000 450s. Some owners can DIY the issue but most are check book sailors and not equipped to jump in to a major structural repair. I don’t say a class action is not an option, i just say: this is not a class action restricted to US (think at all the different way such boat are owned ....: leasing, charter, owner with sharetime scheme, shadow compagny, flag outside owner’s country....and so on) At the end a real nightmare to define who is requerant and prosecuted (Sure that somes lawers see already $$$$ in front of such tweaky case....

Colin, you and Jamie have exposed not only a design flaw, but seemingly a company morality flaw! If they don't step up and take it on the chin that their design is flawed, then they have an obvious disregard to their moral duty to their customers! You are one hell of a team, and to make a conscious decision to make these choices, knowing the likely outcome takes a lot of balls and proves your moral compass is pointing in the right direction! Here's a possible question Lagoon may like to answer, "How many Catamarans of all manufacturers, have suffered fractured bulk heads"? Let's face it, if their defence is, Hurricane damage, running aground, heavy charter use etc, then any boat that has had this kind of use must surely suffer the same problems? I am not as knowledgeable as you clearly are, but I would be willing to lay odd's on your theory being the correct one! Are you aware of a Skipper called Igor Stropnik? He has experience delivering and doing charters on many types of boat in your type of class! He specifically said on a few of his videos that Lagoons creak like F$%K in rolling seas, something he said other boats, Specifically the Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 he sails in this video don't : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YLQiGfoUunA.html. Maybe you could ask him if he has any info or an opinion on the subject, he does seem a very professional skipper, as you are and seems to do quite a few deliveries from a Factory located somewhere in the north east of the Bay of Biscay! And the twat who has just bought a new lagoon, I hope mother nature deals him a nice dose of lightning, if that don't crack his bulkheads it will at least F$%K his electronics and maybe a little hole in the hull. I hope he is as resourceful as you and doesn't find his pride and joy lying down in Davy Joneses Locker!

Colin & Jamie, thank you for doing the right thing! It’s awesome that you are sharing this information! As a sailor currently looking for a catamaran to purchase, this information was huge! I don’t feel I can safely purchase a Lagoon at this time. I want to know that the Lagoon (Beneteau) company is willing to take care of their mistakes and do the right thing, first! Design flaws and mistakes happen, it’s what the company chooses to do with the information that makes all the difference!

Considering the number of Lagoons built for the charter market, one would have assumed they are built strong enough to handle rough treatment from inexperienced users. Thank you Colin for bringing this to our attention and I suggest that Lagoon would be wise to come to the party and produce and engineered fix for the affected vessels.

I have dreamed of owning a Lagoon for a few years now but until this issue can be resolved by Lagoon themselves and there is a redesign of the bulkheads in the future I'm going to have to look elsewhere for a boat I can trust to sail my family on. Thank you Colin and Jaime for making this series and bringing this to light!

We are looking at 2nd hand catamarans and we’re very interested in the Lagoon 400. This bulkhead issue appears to be just a 450 issue from what we know. That said, it just now put doubts in my head about Lagoon. If Lagoon would have owned up and showed it’s a 450 issue then I would still have looked at the 400. Bu now, who’s to know if there are future issues with all lagoons? We are now in August booked a charter of a Leopard 40 (managed to change my booking away from Lagoon 400). So there you go, we are seriously buyers who are walking away from Lagoon - and I really really like their boats. The Leopard and Fountaine Pajot’s are about in the same price, why risk getting a Lagoon? Not me, unless I get 25% discount…..

@@aeasthouse316 I am now looking at sea wind, Leopard and Bale instead for my future plans of cruising into retirement.( Or maybe a perfectly uninsurable 450 for 100K and 80 K worth of work)

@@emilopffer1069 personally not a fan of Seawind - just too many design issues I don’t like. The build quality though is very good, but it feels to me like a boat designed by an engineer, not marine architect (no disrespect to any engineers, some may even say it’s a good thing 😂). Depending on the model you look at, the shrouds come down so you have to dodge it every time you go underneath it, lines all across the side deck where you walk, steps in the floor, dual helm stations, those sorts of things. Many love them, me not so much. Bali’s I have no experience with as there are less around, not even seen one in Australia boat shows, so can’t comment on them. Hope you find the right boat soon at the right price. As to a cheap Lagoon 450 - can’t see any owners parting with a big hole in their pocket. There will always be a buyer who will pay lots of money for them I recon.

Thank you for honest effects and dedication on this very serious issue. Yes, some owners will not show this problem because it's a stress issue and not all boats are under the same stress. So when you check your bulkheads keep in mind how you have used and stressed your boat. Also, use a head gun to remove the trim around the bulkhead doors this will loosen the glue and make the job easier. Good Luck All!

Young man you have a huge set of coconuts on you, seriously. Your courage and bravery on this are astonishing. You're basically going up against not only a multi-million if not billion dollar yacht builder but also the cognitive dissonance of Lagoon Owners themselves. I truly hope you have a good high powered law firm in your corner. At first of course this company was making what appeared to be an effort to work with you in good faith. As you've began to realize over time though that is not actually what's going on. Especially the more word gets out about what could be a major flaw in design. If I were you I would expect there to be law suits soon to try and shut you up. We're talking about hundreds of millions in liability on Lagoons part if you're proven correct. I do not expect them to take that lying down and to very soon go on the offensive. You're doing something that very few have the balls to do by going up against the big boys. You really aren't trying to turn this into a fight and were I'm sure hoping for someone to step up and do the right thing. Sadly that's not how most operate in today's world. I wish nothing but the best for you and your crew as I do believe this came from your hearts, a good place, and you're not just trying to get something for nothing. You've already done the work needed to repair your own yacht and are now actually fighting for others to not have to face these rebuilds alone and get the support they need as well as deserve. I wish you and your crew nothing but the best as I believe you're good people simply trying to help others...

He posted the link above under Collins pinned comment. I think they are in panic mode, and trying to run from this. They know they have a problem. Truly an amazing story unfolding before our eyes. Any one who has owned several boats knows how many things can go wrong and how much care needs to be taken when you make a purchase. You boys are for sure doing the correct thing here and documenting the whole process will help so many of these boat owners now and in the future. Lagoon management is only hurting themselves and there future sales buy turning a blind eye to this problem, these type of things never just go away and dealing with it head on is the only way a manufacture can get clear of the long term damage. Keep the pressure on from all sides !!!

I have such a long perspective, I still think it is an option. Because if is NOT fixed, it gives me at least 18 months of food of savings in the price. (We can do all the repair ourself) It is after all very cost effective to DIY. (Renovation is not that different in a home and on a boat. Its the know how that counts.)

@@familyupgrade Indeed. This is more of a buyer beware situation. If you're buying a lagoon, insist on bulkhead inspection before negotiating price. If you see cracked bulkheads, price accordingly by factoring in the cost of repair.
