Well. I think in gcn ac the personalities sucked because EVERYONE treated you like shit. I understand that newcomers aren't seen well,but not everyone is like that. Some people are nice with strangers. But at the same time not all people are nice, and that's the error of nl and nh. I think that in ww the personalities were right, cranky villagers treated you like shit (because that's their role), normal villagers were nice etc..

Wanna know something interesting? Apparently this game didnt even get translated from japanese when it came to America. The English team just did it their own way and thats why they're so rude lol. That and you could get away with it, the rude dialogue back then. Its not as bad as it is now though its still there to an extent in the newer games.

They're mean in the Japanese game too, but NOA definitely punched up the dialogue a bit.

@@Caniki In any case, it was definitely not as bad in the Japanese game compared to the English localization. I definitely like the villagers better the way they are now though. Them throwing a tantrum for the crime of, for example, rejecting a nickname felt uncalled for.

It was the tail end of the 90s and snark was still in. This game was pretty tame compared to a lot of the stuff on TV at the time.

@@MrPenetroso I'm new to the franchise, but if I ever basically "finish" NH and find my old DS I might try Wild World. Reading about the Able sisters on the wiki is what convinced me, because seeing such serious backstory stuff really surprised me after getting accustomed to the simplistic and constantly cheerful NH characters. I like the gameplay of NH and love its visuals, but at some point it would be nice to see villagers have some actual personality for a change.

Each villager was unique back then and the friendship you will build with them feels kinda genuine. Something you wont get from NH and NL, sadly. Thats why people nowadays judges villagers based on appearance only. Very sad.

Wild World had a great balance between rude villagers and nice villagers, also, talking to the able sisters regularly gives you way more interesting dialogue than what NL and NH offers. I got so invested in their backstory when I played it as a kid. Never played City Folk but I reckon it's not too far off from what Wild World is.

That's why I like WW Grumpy and snooty characters are exactly as described, but once you befriend them they're really nice to YOU but still assholes to everyone else. I loved it

@@TigirlakaLaserwolf6 Total EDITS: 5 (as of May 14, 2020) New Horizons needs dynamic villager interaction. Badly. If two of them had a conversation about say, a "true or untrue fact" of a penguin... and neither of them are a penguin, but you have a penguin villager, if you talk to either of the first 2 later on you should see them tell you that the penguin villager explained what was up. Also if they say they're gonna bake a cake or food "tomorrow" you should be able to see them making it or see them sharing it with others and inviting over for dinner. I love NH but it still very much suffers from overly gamey dialogue. And some dialogue honestly needs to be blocked until your island has actually had a specific season... or take into account how long ago a shop was finished. Takes me out of the world when they say stuff like "I planted pitfalls last winter and I'm looking for them" and I'm like "dude literally *none* of us were here last winter". Or "XYZ and I went to the tailor shop a few days ago"... but 2 days ago the shop didn't exist...? Also more dynamic and consistent dialogue trees would be nice. Like if they wanted to give you something but then they say "oh I'll just mail it", if you free up your pockets within like 10 seconds you should be allowed to ask them "You had something for me?" And they're like "oh yeah here you go!" Also villagers being kinder to certain species, either their own or different would be interesting. I also notice, that partially due to the obscene amount of characters, and limited personalities they still feel very samey. A bit off topic for dialogue, but I want to be able to properly use the facilities I decorated my island with. I want to buy a snack or drink or cotton candy. It'd be great if you could ask some villagers (Grumpy or Lazy or Snooty would be harder to convince if ever) to work as an assistant in shops too. Like if they accept, you can suggest a shift (30 mins?) And they'll say they'll do it depending on how late it is. And they also ask you if you wanna play like beach volleyball or something with them. But you're never allowed to. it's just a *thing* they say. The reason I find the dialogue so offputting is that the villagers are more alive and energetic than ever. They actually work out or run or clean and emote to each other. They swap clothes while out, they hold more than tools in their hands. So when there's very limited interaction it feels... well, empty. (Also for the love of god let them catch fish or bugs without giving up or waiting specifically until the bug is out of reach... seriously what is that) And while I'm on the topic of "interaction" it'd be cool if some furniture could count as multiple things. Like bunkbeds. I should theoretically be allowed to climb up to the top. And I should be able to sit on top of my freezer if no one is opening it. Just for fun. Some desks with stuff on them already should have a "free" slot on one side to put a small thing there. EDIT: I also want to actually rock in rocking chairs... or spin in wheeled chairs. And fish while sitting. EDIT 2: If I pass up on a deal that someone wanted to sell to me I should be allowed to change my mind if I talk to them again in the next few minutes. I get this is make haggling for a lower price a risk but most rational people would be allowed to...change their mind. EDIT 3: They should have dialogue pertaining to watching a tarantula get caught. Lyman looked relieved and I expected him to say thanks for getting rid of the tarantula in his path. Also I was provoking Monty multiple times and I can keep apologizing no matter how much I abuse him... in fact after I had made him depressed and angry six times each, he rather gave me a bicycle helmet and said it was for "being so good to him". Good god this is dumb. And HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE GRUMPY. What is this goddamn interaction... EDIT 4:My villagers are not disturbed or confused in the slightest by my wearing something that covers my entire face. Also I wish that at least a few villagers had more personalized dialogue, like the super heroes. Or even HELL reuse the personality dialogue from WW or CF or NL for some villagers. Sure we've seen it all before - but we've already seen the NH dialogue before, god knows lol. It may not be brand new but it would be SOMETHING to add some spice to the samey personalities. EDIT5: Why why why can I not change their catchphrase or greeting after I already did it with them? Why do I need to wait everytime until they get bored of it? I messed up and forgot to add a period to a greeting and it looks so stupid... I really wish villagers had specialized relationships with others. Like they're more inclined to hang out with certain ones and actually (mention) avoiding others. It's so boring that just about everyone is treated with the same treatment just because of personality combinations. The gifts and visits to other villagers are just random. "Oh wow I never expected to be invited here" YOU WERE HERE BEFORE. And that's another thing. There's no consistency. Why do peppy villagers have a "lolrandom" dialogue about losing their voice and then they immediately get over it the next time you talk to them? There should instances of like say "Remember the time we went to Coco's house? That was cool." Or "Hey, player. I'm really glad you swung by earlier/yesterday/the other day. It made my day." We need interactions that take into account how many hours or days occurred since something. I cannot stress this enough. Maybe I'm asking a lot but the villagers should be the meat of the game and they are just not very fun to talk to. I also want to work towards maybe making some meaner characters nicer... or hey maybe you don't want to and you just leave em. ANYTHING to help have a goal to work towards Anyways that's just my thoughts.

This is just my own theory, but I think that the reason GC Animal crossing had such rude villagers was because of the localization team. If you see the way it was first advertised to American audiences, one of the commercials tried to sell it as some kind of reality t.v. drama show (maybe because they thought the core gameplay wouldn't be enough to sell kids on it at the time).

@@TrueLadyEvilChan Literally just right now in New Horizons I was talking to Cookie and she was like "Its so sunny and nice out right now, what should I wear?" WHEN ITS 10 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT??!! Nintendo, y'all delayed the game and still have slip ups like this, I've never experienced little things like this in previous installments of the game...it honestly ruins the gameplay experience, I find myself playing New Leaf more because it's so much more polished in my opinion...

DaBraxMan this is so funny. I have had some villagers be rude to me to. Lkke croque calling my name ridiculous and a terrible name. And then Velma saying I look the the old carpet she just threw in the garabage. These villagers were not nice at all. All though, sometimes i miss that they are not like that in the newer games

Nintendo Gal I miss their old attitudes too. It's a shame they didn't have that trait in New Leaf. Chatting with my villagers in the GameCube always felt refreshing, like I was actually talking with them. Unlike New Leaf were it's constant repetive dialogue.

This is exactly what i mean . Sure , some rudeness does indeed add humanity to the villagers but straight up calling the villagers overweight or saying theyre mentally ill in a insulting tone is just too over the fun meter.

Jirachey Mostly I think they don't have their sassy attitude from the original game in New Leaf because you ARE the mayor. Maybe it's just because they respect you more then if you were just a neighbor. Although, I have had some villagers that have been fairly rude to me in New Leaf. Mostly after I go moping around shaking trees and get stung.

In that game they are all pieces of s**t and real people are not that rude: even if they don't like you, they will rarely flip you off for the dumbest reason; but I would not mind if some of them kept using sarcasm or asking inappropriate questions, maybe even spread rumors. After playing Animal crossing: city folk for years (It's part of my childhood) I can say villagers there had a good balance, not constantly rude but also not happy everytime they see you. In New Horizons they are just boring, they would never let me notice I am listening to their private conversation.
