Animal Movie Review by Anupama Chopra | Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor

When I interviewed Sandeep following the release of Kabir Singh, our conversation concluded with him stating that "if people thought this was a violent film, he would show them what a violent film actually is." Sandeep has indeed kept his promise. Animal showcases various forms of violence, including emotional, psychological, sexual, and physical. The film features Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Anil Kapoor.

I have a problem with lies regarding Ranjeet Nalwa Shalwa and halwa. Sikhs were colonized by the British for over 150 years, but Afghans defeated British. Sikhs have been always state beneficiaries of the British and has serviced them throughout. Sikhs are the reason behind British colonization of South Asia. They took help ( soldiers, guns, bombs, telescopes, Maps ) from British to invade Hazara and uzbik ( singers and dancers) region of Afghanistan. Within 7 years Pashtuns/Pathans got together and kicked injured ranjett back to lahore . Nalwa was beheaded in jamord by Dost Mohammad. Afghan history and museums tell a different story but since they were never colonized by the British and never had British given cinemas, printing press, historians, railways, English schools, trained army, ports, parliament , radio etc, their version of history is not known.

Why do an interview when one knows what SRV would say?! It's quite evident that he made this movie out of the unreasonable angst he carries against the critics who did not liked Kabir Singh?! Just like everyone has artistic freedom to express what they want so do critics have freedom to dissent! Rather SRV should have taken the criticism in his stride and showed that he has matured as a story teller who believes that violence always ends up in destruction but he just had to go ahead and make a movie wherein the sky is not the limit for portraying misogyny.

This movie is doing good because a lot of people have this ANIMAL subdued within due to fake morality. The father son relationship is kind of a glue to hold all the violent scenes together. That said, this movie is nothing more than a blow to the fake morality of people. People who are blindly following some moral principles due to the fear of law and society. Such movies provide people with validation and a chance to live in that freedom of experience. Until our society understands the reasons behind acting morally, such movies will keep coming and will do good at the box office. Its a pity on the Indian society. I hope one day, people understand why women should be respected, not because of fear of law but true understanding. Only then people will prefer to watch Sam Manekshaw over this video game. Cheers!!

What was most disappointing for me was that the father son relationship really was not explored as deeply as how the trailer had implied. Anil and Ranbir are brilliant in the scenes where they are together, but just isn’t more of it. Instead more focus on elongated scenes of violence and misogyny. Pity. Ranbir however is one hell of an actor. Kudos!

There are different ways to justify violence. Glorification of abuse is however absolutely unacceptable.

First time I am disappointed with Film Companion and Anupama maam. They are letting their personal opinions colour their judgement. It looks like they hate Sandeep. Animal 's teaser and trailer clearly shows that its a violent adult film, and why did FC expect to see something else in the the movie,? The film did serve what was promised in the trailer but FC just saw misogyny and missed everything else ? Agreed there is misogyny in the movie but every character in the movie is opposed to Ranbir's character behaviour...its not glorified..no one in his family loves or appreciates him for his actions in the movie. All the powerful gangster/violent movies in the world are at some level misogynistic about how they treat women, but none have been panned like Animal, that should say something about what kind of opinion do these criticizers have about Sandeep when reviewing Animal....personal or professional?

American psycho or Joker are about flawed characters with the understanding that what they are doing is wrong but do it anyway, because they stopped giving a Damn about their morality. If he didn't ever meet Zoya, he wouldn't have a heart and would die in the first half only. The story would've ended right there and then. The exploration in the 2nd half was quite interesting when Bobby appeared, but had less screen time. If they could've focused just about more of his character, then the audience would've been engaged even more.

I don't understand why it seems that it is incumbent upon Indian cinema to preach. The last time I checked, cinema, regardless of its ethnicity, is meant to entertain and for its art to be appreciated. And Animal does just that. It's true that if you're expecting a run-of-the-mill Bollywood movie where the "hero" is larger than life, and the "heroine" must sound and look like a "Bollywood heroine", and the "villains" are born villain, then yea, this movie is not for you. This movie is rather about an ordinary man with an extraordinary grade of affection and adoration towards his father. And just like any of us, he's got some issues too. It's a pure family-vendetta action drama. As a filmmaker, is it so blasphemous to be inclusive and narrate a story with characters portraying actual human shades? For all that talk of misogyny and feminism, did we fail to notice how realistically and maturely Rasmika's and Ranbir's relationship has been portrayed? Can't we appreciate the fact that the movie has used music to bring out the art and fervour of not just emotional scenes but also the action scenes? How refreshing of an idea is that! And finally, Bobby Deol. I never knew the guy had so much talent in him. He doesn't have a word of dialogue in the movie, and yet, he hits the ball out of the park with his angelic-demon expressions. Kudos, to Sandeep Reddy Vanga for having the bold chutzpah to choose to make a movie that speaks the truth that all humans do have grey shades, rather than play safe and rake in the moolah.

This is my problem with reviewers man. They know the character is extreme, and the entire depiction of the character revolves around the fact that he is extreme, yet they still somehow take this as the director's message to society regarding how an ideal male should be. Which is far from the truth. I get it, Indian society is not used to character studies like this, but it still annoys me how people keep focusing on the wrong things in this movie.

This isn’t a character study. Kabhi masala movies ke ilawa bhi kuch dekh we have been making good movies that are ACTUAL character studies for decades now. I mean, Shekhar Kapur made Masoom 40 years ago ffs.

@@Burner__ Sorry I didn't know that judicial justice must be written into the plot of a story just to qualify for your intellectualism. SPOILER ALERT. Even if we go by your standards, is it not enough for the protagonist to get critically injured, almost die, almost lose his family, lose his sanity, and end up with a father who will die in 3-6 months despite the extremes that he has gone to protect him? Again maybe I'm not as intellectual as you to understand what a character study is, it's my fault.

A big dislike for this review. As a reviewer, you have to be neutral, but here AC reviews the film using feminist lens, when you should be lens free while reviewing any film. Vanga or any genuine filmmaker has absolutely no obligation to make a film keeping in mind people's sentiments. Rather, Vanga created a universe, which is a reflection of his inner universe. We have the choice whether to partake in it or not. Those who should be called out are directors who artificially manipulate the audience and just follow a template. Those are the hypocrites, and SRV belongs to the other end of the spectrum.
@astro6020
@astro6020 8 месяцев назад
Exactly. The title of the movie itself is "Animal." This is SRV's interpretation of it. You shouldn't expect a movie about an upholder of women's rights or a do-gooder or societal reformer, when the director himself has made it clear from the very start. Kudos to Vanga for having the guts to make a film being true to himself.

Dude dude. Indian movies are violent as well. Violence is not the issue. Issue is glorification of a negative character. Movies can be made on black characters but it should show their psychological bend of mind than glorifying it. Agneetpath was violent , squid game was violent , fight club was violent but its not harmful as it is depicting morally correct idea. Yes society is not equal and there are bad people and we need to know their stories too but justifying their behavior is absolutely dangerous.
