Um, actually, Brennan appeared on one of the test episodes, back when they still used actual bells to ring in. To call this his first appearance is only justified if we deem any game where he loses to be non-canonical
As a fellow Pratchett enjoyer, it's more important to say that actually -everyone- can see Octarine as when you close your eyes those colour bursts are actually the Colour of Magic.
Seriously, Otto's Irresistable Dance is one of the best crowd-control spells at higher levels. Sure, it is range: touch, but it doesn't allow a save. That's crazy good to lock down an enemy caster.
Brennan makes a good point about DnD. I used to have this DM who told me that the best trick he ever learned was that he would sometimes have players roll to do something that he plans on letting happen anyway, because it would be better as a satisfying moment to the player, and if you were to roll something like a NAT 1, instead you would be given something like a consequence later on as opposed to simply failing spectacularly. He said this approach makes every awesome or tragic moment that much more impactful and fulfilling to the players over taking a hard stance on rolling for everything, and later makes the effect of the NAT 1 that much more punishing, and can set up interesting scenes later down the line (let's say you wanna... catch a falling princess, then roll a 1, you still save the princess but you break your arm/leg in the process. E.g. Tasked failed successfully, or you're captured by the antagonist, or poisoned, etc etc) I dub it the "Butterfly Rule", because often it feels kind of like an in-game butterfly effect.
Turning nat 1s into later consequences is such an awesome way to let players off for unlucky rolls, while also turning them into a much more interesting roll than "you fail", without being needlessly punishing. It'll also feed into a sense of dread after they roll a few nat 1s, and they start worrying about what's gonna happen, and then you pull out Gethekriax the Unbound and everything goes to shit.
I can remember a few GM's in ye olden days who insisted on the "Oh wait a minute, you said you bought a back pack, you didn't buy a backpack STRAP, therefore you can't wear your backpack and all your food is ruined!!!"" Ain't nobody got time for that shit.
@@fugitiveunknown7806 Good thing most of these micromanagement GMs aren't a thing anymore (and that the rules are a bit less strict about having to gather/carry reageants, except the rarer ones, the super common ones are assumed to be carried at all time)
I let my players use Rule of Cool only if they burn inspiration, which I also give out for roleplaying - it's to give more concrete and tangible meaning to their roleplaying beyond just telling a good story.
I already went into this episode expecting Brennan was going to win, and then as he announced it was Brennan's first time I realized that they're in for a RIDE.
@@romxxii no he got stomped, Rogan had facts and stats while Adam kept falling back on logical fallacies for his arguements Also the fact you think Joe Rogan being prescribed a cocktail of medications one being Ivermectin (which even the cnn medical expert admitted was valid) is some kind of valid reason to "debunk" his arguements speaks very poorly about you and your ability to use critical thinking, so please next time make a valid claim or just ask a question not seeping with bias
@@andrewcook2625 it's easy to pretend you have "facts and logic" and back an unprepared guest into a corner. Hell, that's Ben Shapiro's entire modus operandi. Why do you think he keeps debating unprepared college kids instead of actual experts? It's also really easy to fudge statistical data, like how a common tactic on alt right "news" sites to claim that climate change isn't real is by presenting a short span of glacial ice recovering as evidence, when a longer span of data for _multiple_ ice sheets would show a steady decline over the decades. And finally, don't pretend Rogan hasn't been harmful to the United States' vaccination drive. And no, just because he got a prescription for Ivermectin as "a cocktail of drugs" doesn't make things better, or change the fact that even human-grade Ivermectin is _still_ not cleared by any medical agency, even in countries that are allegedly doing mass Ivermectin drives disguised as "de-worming" campaigns. The fact is: - Ivermectin is _not_ cleared for use against COVID-19 by the FDA - current and _multiple_ double-blind clinical trials have not gone well in favor of ivermectin as a COVID drug (see www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/tables/ivermectin-data/) - Merck, the company that _sells_ Ivermectin, has repeatedly said "don't fucking use this for COVID" and have started working on a different antiviral drug, currently in testing
@@romxxii so first on Rogans podcast they pull up sites and sources for each persons claims not just in favor of Joe, so anyone worth their salt would do some very basic research on the topics Joe told them beforehand they were going to talk about as well as research on the topic they want to talk about as the guest has more control over the conversation... Adam didn't do this and it cost him, that simple Also Joe brings on actual experts all the time Fudging data is common tactic for all "news" sites so don't pretend it's only one group at fault for that... and trying to paint it only as an issue on the "alt" right makes it sound like you are trying to paint Joe as an "alt" right figure... again painting you in a very bias light To the Joe hurt vax drive in the US, if one dude running a podcast ruins your nations vax drive then that shows how terribly you are marketing your vacations... maybe next time dont make your drive a large shame tactic campaign to force people to get vacation See Joe didn't actually hurt the drive, the political games and tactics used by the government and medai did, you just want a scapegoat over accepting that maybe the insults and bias weren't the right way to handle the masses to the covid-19 treatment, that has nothing to do with the conversation, Joe never said Ivermectin was a cure for covid so you trying to make it out like he did is just childish, maybe actually watch his podcast where he talks with cnn's medical expert who openly admitted Joe was being miss treated by the medai Lastly merck said stop using it because people where going out to stores and buying animal grade drugs and self prescribing, merck was covering their ass for potential lawsuits... but this again means nothing as Joe was prescribed by a licensed physician to take the drug, so clearly you are arguing you know better than the doctor (much like how the anti-vax people think they know better than the doctor)
I dunno, I always find it hilarious. Maybe because I also give no shits about US geography. But also maybe because I remember "Talking to Americans" being on TV. We did get some payback. The national animal of Canada will always be the Timbit.
I wonder how serious Adam's answer was. Calgary isn't even the capital of the province it's in! He seemed shocked that he got the question wrong, though...
I’m an American--Texan, to be specific-- and I want to stress that when I was younger, I made a point of learning all the capital cities of the world, as well as all the various states/provinces/prefectures, etc. But, for the most part there’s been no useful application for all that memorizing. It amounted to a bunch of trivia, much of which I’ve forgotten again. I forgot what the capital city of Canada was, simply because it wasn’t particularly useful for me to know. Does that make me ignorant?
Um, actually, this is the start of Brennan's villain arc, in this episode he's like "This feels bad to make such a dirty move" and now he's all like "I will use every fibre of my soul and being to prevail in any contest"
I find it extremely hilarious that Adam Connover, the man who kind of essentially started this whole trend of nerds correcting modern myths on CH, got only 2 points
@@danatronics9039 look up spain's racial caste system. It's not specifically to insult but is a term used in a legal framework that is entirely racist and bears its weight. Like Quadroon too.
@@Souledex blackamoore and mulato well. A good litmus test to see if someone’s a racist is if people know and use old timey racist slurs, because only hard core racists really know them and use them. Unless you’re a historian.

Um, actually, Spirited Away's Dragon is not Haku, that is is slave name given to him when Yubaba steals his memories and identity to serve her. The point of the movie's plot is that Chihiro reminds Haku that he is the Spirit of a River; the Kohaku River. And is from then on properly addressed as Kohaku
@@pseudotasuki um actually chihiro remembered her name before haku’s name is revealed, as shown when she tells yubaba’s twin her real name before leaving with Haku
@@spamreciever4208 it's supposed to be pretentious because it's essentially um actually in non-gameshow form. I will admit I haven't watched it in a LONG TIME, but I distinctly remember an episode where they correct all the errors made in episodes before it. Also, consider the fact it is definitely not scripted by Adam... he is just a partially nerdy actor who wanted to make light of himself being viewed as annoying by making an annoying character.
Um, actually, the fourth dragon from the left (from Spirited Away) is named Kohaku River. Haku is the name that was forced on him by Yubaba to steal his real name and bind him to his employment contract.
I just want to say, that in the spirit of the game, yes, being more accurate is better. But there being a more correct answer doesn't make saying he's named 'Haku' incorrect, as that is a name that he is called also.
Very late to the party but here's my Um, Actually: The Fifth Element was heavily inspired by the comic Valerian & Laureline (formerly known as Valerian) because Besson's goal was to adapt it when he started the project. However he didn't get the rights until decades later so he ended up having to change some parts of it.
I thought The Fifth Element ripped off 'The Incal' after all Moebius the artist for that series attempted to sue Luc Besson on the grounds of extreme similarity. And wasn't it was Star Wars that was supposedly 'very similar' to Valerian?
@@Quotheraving Moebius didn't sue, his editor did, Moebius actually worked on 5th Element XD (which is why the sueing didn't stick). Both were, Millenium Falcon is like 99% like the ship from Valerian). But aside from that it's more lie...Inspiration. Meanwhile Besson wanted to do an actual adaptation and ended up basically making an AU Fanfic because of his lack of rights. Which is ironic for a lot of fans because a lot of us consider the 5th element to be a better adaptation than the actual movie Valerian (in the tone and kind of story told).
@@celia1888 Thanks for the clarification.. Yeah I knew there had been legal action of some kind and had heard it was related to Moebius. As it turns out Jodorowsky blamed Moebius for the lawsuit failing because he worked for Besson. However, as to both films being inspired by Valerian I'm calling bull on that. The similarities between Star Wars & Valerian are superficial at best. For example you cite the Falcon as being a 99% lift from Valerian whereas in reality the design we see on screen was made by the production staff with the only input from Lucas being allegedly "Make it more like a burger". There's obviously been some inspiration but it came via the design team working to a very tight deadline (2 and a half months) and only involves 2 design elements, the saucer shape (see previous explanation for this) and the side fins, so one design element out of literally dozens! I sense a great disturbance in the straws, as if they are being grasped at by Valerian fans! Let's face it If there is any obviously heavy 'inspiration' going on in Star Wars it's from Kurosawa's 'Hidden Fortress', Dune, Lensmen, Campbell & Flash Gordon. The 5th element on the other hand bears marked similarities to the Incal (and my point still stands) sufficient for a lawsuit to be filed.
Um, Actually, having magical abilities can be a mutation, as the mutant Pixie has a mutation that grants her a strong connection to magical forces, allowing her to easily use magic.
I commented this after you and I wish I would’ve waited to see the several comments that mention this, but I am also glad that other people notice this as well.
Dude Ottos Irresistible Dance is an insanely good spell. The target provokes attacks of opportunity on each of its turns. So you effectively get to attack the target twice every round and they can't move or fight back. It's an insanely good spell against creatures with low will saves.
Technically, while it does fit with the X-Men motif of naming yourself X-something, X-23 was named because she was the first success after 22 failed experiments, making her name more akin to Xperiment-23. She was called X-23 well before joining the X-Men.
Um, actually, and for no additional points "The Jabbawockeez" are a popular and talented break dance crew that is known for wearing masks during their routines.
I literally just got done posting the same correction. It makes me genuinely happy for someone else to know the same fantasy poetry fact as me. I'm so proud of you!
@@schrodingersbraincell5861 I think everyone got that right except the host. I thought it was Jabberwocky and thought everyone was gonna get that one wrong
Um actually. Otto's irresistible dance is unquestionably an amazing spell. Nothings feels better than beating a kraken because it's just vibing with its tentacles swing in the air
It’s hilarious finding “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” in college used book stores and libraries, because the label taped to the side often reads “Do Androids Dream of Electric Dick”
Siobhan is one of my favorite contestants. Especially for telling Adam he's an asshole nonchalantly to his face. She's also great in other episodes and it's my life goal for the spelling of her name to be in trivia (anywhere) cuz it's very interesting and I've memorized the spelling.
Adam clearly did not take well to getting outbuzzed by Siobhan and Brennan on stuff he also knew. Especially the Blood Elf one where Siobhan got it on the technicality but he had the extremely pedantic answer.
@@loseftheman9474 Nah, this is pretty much Adam. He made "Adam Ruins Everything" based on the fact that his pedantry usually turns people off. They just tweak his character on his show a bit to make him feel just a tad less offensive.
My disappointment in the dragon question is immeasurable. Because NOBODY FRICKING KNEW SPIKE. Also glad to hear that it was Parthanax, because it means that I in fact WAS able to recognize him through the tiny picture in my tiny screen. And the fact that only Brennan got Toothless has now ruined my day. (Other than that, this was great)
Um actually, Vader actually can use force lightning! He uses a red storm version of it in Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi where he bypasses the need to direct the lightning through his body by creating a storm above his victim. He also used a solid white version in the Legends book "the Jedi Path" by using a Kyber Crystal to protect his animatronic body (or perhaps become so attuned with the dark side that he used force lightning anyway even knowing it might kill him). In fact, Vader is so skilled in Force lightning, he was able to teach it to others, including starkiller, and can easily absorb or redirect any force lightning other sith may try to use on him.
Although probably much less known, there is an episode of Stargate SG-1 (season 2, ep. 21) that also perfectly fits the last of the time travel graphs.
I know it’s way too late but I’ll throw my hat in the ring. Um Actually, X-23 isn’t named to go with an X theme. She named X-23 because she was the 23rd attempt at cloning Weapon X (Wolverine), who was called Weapon X because he was the 10th (Roman numeral X) weaponized mutant created by the Weapon Plus Program.
The X in X-23 has also been explained that the Y-chromosome from Wolverine was degrading over time and was replaced with a fresh X-chromosome to explain why X-23 is a girl.
@@drowninafire Depends on who you ask? At some point, I'm pretty sure they revealed her name is technically Laura Kinney. If I remember right, her biological mother was the scientist who made her, Dr Kinney, and before she died she told X-23 that her name was Laura.
Hey Adam, um actually Scorpion was never an ice ninja, which would imply that he was a member of the Lin Kuei. He was a member of a rival clan, the Shirai Ryu.
Um, actually, the Shirai Ryu were originally part of the Lin Kuei and splintered off from them after the original Takeda (not Takeda Takahashi) decided to form his own clan. We also don't know _when_ the split happened, so it's entirely possible that Scorpion was a member of the Lin Kuei before the Shirai Ryu. Furthermore, the Lin Kuei have nothing to do with Bi-Han's, Kuai Liang's, or Frost's powers; they inherited those powers by being part Cryomancer, so it's entirely possible that Hanzo could have had similar powers before he died, even though he wasn't Lin Kuei. He didn't, but his clan has nothing to do with that.
@@RabblesTheBinx although the lin kuei that reformed after kuai liang was removed from quan chi’s control was based mostly in cryomancy as the primary ability
17:44 Um, actually, Scorpion was never a member of the "Ice Ninja" clan, aka Sub-Zero's clan the Lin Kuei. Scorpion was a member of the Shirai Ryu clan. The two clans were rivals, which ultimately culminated in the elder Sub-Zero (Bi-Han) killed Scorpion. The reason why Scorpion did not transform into a scorpion for his Animality is because he was not playable in the original Mortal Kombat 3 game. Sheeva was in the base game with the scorpion animality, so when Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 released with an expanded roster (including Scorpion and Reptile, who were not in the original game) they were given some awkward animal transformations.
This also gets at what I thought the "Um Actually" was going to be, which is that there were no Animalities in "Mortal Kombat" as they did not appear until the Third game.
No surprise that Brennan won, but good on Siobhan for keeping it that close. One remembered "Um Actually" and they would've tied! Also, the Animality discussion made me spit cereal out of my nose.
Um actually, “I’d like to say that this is very fun and I like this” perfectly describes my thoughts about Um actually. I’m still waiting for the home version Trapp mentioned in an interview last year, I google the home version every 2 months to see if anything’s been announced.
Wow. These older episodes were cut so much tighter, with less room for the digressions that make the series so fun. But, still, it was nice to seen Brennan's first (official) game.
Um actually Vader can and has used force lightning but due to his mechanical arms it is incredibly dangerous to him and nearly killed him when he did it.
I’m watching these out of order bc I just discovered them, but I feel so proud when I play along at home and get more right than Brennan. I got 13 dragons (and would’ve possibly gotten two more if they were bigger than my cell phone screen).
So this means that Brennan takes over Adam's show and it is now "Brennan Ruins Everything While Wearing Adam's Head as a Hat!", right? "2 men enter, 1 man leaves." They never mention women so I figure she is safe.
@@svevo Instead of taking something people like and explaining why they shouldn’t, he takes some obscure property and rambles on for the entire episode on why they should get into it
Um actually, “People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually form a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff.”
"You don't want to be like those Harry Potter kids who know magic, but don't know math or how to write an essay." Man, that hits differently coming back to this after Misfits & Magic 😂
Um, actually, while "Deathwing" is a moniker he later gives himself, the dragon's true name is Neltharion, who was the Aspect of the Black Dragonflight before being corrupted by the Old Gods. Iknow it's way, way, way too late at this point, but I couldn't help but notice that no one has made this point, and I kind of can't help it.
Um, actually, the image depicts him at the end stages of his madness, at this point he has fully taken the name Deathwing, no longer responding to or viewing himself as Neltharion. The change of name became solidified when he took the power of the Dragon Soul, transforming him into Deathwing, which in the same event was renamed to the Demon Soul. So ultimately either name is correct, for while his true name is Neltharion, he later fully takes the name Deathwing and rejects the name Neltharion. Either name is correct when talking about the entity unless specifying a specific period in time before or after his transformation.
Um, Actually this isn't Brennan's first time appearing on the game. He appeared the first time on episode 6 titled "Um, Actually Ep. 6: Monsters, Moogles, and Side Mirrors" and have appeared a total of four times.
@@DesolateFields this episode have tweets from 2018, while Ep.6 have tweets from 2017. Ep.6 was also filmed in the old set, while this episode is filmed in the new set. Although, is it possible that they used to record/release different videos/versions for youtube and dropout??? because im kinda confuse how Trapp, the behind the scenes crew, and Brennan himself didn't realize that this wasn't Brennan's first Um, Actually. @@pseudonymous6921 I think they basically don't really see the pre dropout episodes as real episodes of the show as they were much shorter and less polished
16:22 Um actually force choke and telekinesis are different techniques, as telekinesis is a neutral power but force choke requires one to draw on the dark side. Also Vader is depicted using force lightening in his 2018 comic series, although things were a bit visiony there. It's likely he can't use it normally. So which canon Vader can't use force lightening is legends
I don't know how canon they count as, but Vader is stated to be unable to use Force Lightning as a lamentation by Palpatine when he finds him lying on the lava bank with his other arm removed in the novelization for Episode 3.
The best part of the last question was that anyone with a general knowledge of Canada's political landscape would lose it (as I did, it was a hell of a laugh) at Adam saying Calgary is the capital of Canada.
@New Jersey Youth I would also like to know this. I literally only know him from CH, and this is probably the most I've seen of him, so I'm really lost on all the hate.
