How to animate behind a mask (also known as the pan behind effect) in Adobe After Effects
In order to create the 'pan behind' effect in After Effect just set a keyframe for both the mask path and the position. Now use the 'pan behind' tool to move the logo or graphic (works as well for text layers) out of the mask. The mask will stay in place.

Thanks, Cole! Unfortunately RU-vid pushes consistent uploads more than anything. Even when it's nonsense. Your comment will help push this a little bit though. Thanks for the time.

for those who didnt get it to work, watch 0:38 and make sure you have both mask path and position keyframes selected when moving with the pan behind tool. I was so confused and did not realized I had to select the mask path as well. Terrible ux design from adobe. Great tutorial though had he not explained about the feature animating the mask too I would have not figured out the issue. Would be better if the information was displayed more linearly however.

Hot tip: if, when you get to the keyframe easing part, your graph editor looks nothing like Video Mark's, right click in the graph editor and make sure that you have 'Edit Speed Graph' selected! I thought I was going absolutely nuts because my graph looked nothing like his - it's because I had 'Edit Value Graph' selected instead. Great tutorial!

It's hard to get this one right, but finally foun it, thanks bro!, most people teach about animating the mask but not the shape inside.

There is no position for value for the mask. It's not there. There is a position for the layer we are masking, NOT the mask itself. Clearly I see it on your screen, why don't I have the same options?

WHY don't they just add a "lock mask position" path option??

Many things in AE should be easier to do that's for sure. That's why there's a huge number of helper plug-ins to make life easier.

When selecting all the nodes to add Easy Ease it seems to move the mask as well, messing up the pan behind effect, unlike in your example.
@videomarknet

hm not sure. Let me check with the new version if this technique has changed.

Also, how do you move the layer precisely, rather than using the tool to move it manually? Every time i change the x position value the mask moves. Great tutorial btw
@videomarknet
@videomarknet 5 месяцев назад
good question. Since you set a keyframe at the beginning and work backwards it never occurred to me to do it numerically. You just move the logo 'out of frame' (out of mask that is) and reverse it. After all you can always look at the position values and do it that way. Just a matter of numbers.

Thank you for the video I've been working on this for hours. It blows my mind that Adobe charges a subscription which basically makes the price infinite for the software and it is so unintuitive clunky and confusing to use.

That's where pre-composing always comes in handy. Just nest into a new composition and do the masking inside

I'm trying this on a 3d layer(which is actually a 2d image) and can't seem to get it work..
@videomarknet
@videomarknet 6 месяцев назад
only works on 2D layers. You can't mask 3D layers directly. Doesn't matter if it's a flat image (which 3D has always been for the longest time in AE, only recently it's capable of importing real 3D objects).
@gumz4183

@@videomarknet I am trying to get a photo to pop up into a frame. The photo itself, the backdrop for the photo and the frame are all 2d images IN a 3D space. Is there a way to achieve this?
@videomarknet
@videomarknet 6 месяцев назад
You could precompose it into a new composition and do all the masking in there. While the 3D movement happenning in the parent composition.

If it still doesn't work, this one worked for me Using masks on the actual text layers to do these type of moves can be very painful, because the position of the mask and the text are always linked, so there is no independence. The faster and easier way to what you want to do is to use a solid or shape layer as a Track Matte. This way the matte shape replaces the mask as a totally independent layer, so you can animate both the matte shape and the text layer freely without upsetting each other. Create a solid above the text layer. sized or scaled to match your previous mask. Set the Track Matte setting of the text layer below to Alpha Inverted Matte. AE should automatically turn off visibility of the matte layer. An inverse Alpha Matte acts like a reverse stencil: the text will be visible anywhere in your comp, UNLESS it is behind the matte layer.

Sorry but this is total bs ...just because you can't replicate 3 simple clicks in a very short tutorial that doesn't mean it's not working. It works just fine as it always did. YOU are doing it wrong. If you have 'better' ways to do it feel free to put up a tutorial on your own channel but don't confuse my viewers here with this bs. It's just wrong.
@MuhammadAbdullah-kl8nq
@MuhammadAbdullah-kl8nq Год назад
@@videomarknet I didn't say your method is wrong or anything. I said It didn't work for me as for some others in the comments section. The mask itself moved along with the the shape I was trying to animate. Mask doesn't stay stationary. So I just posted the solution I found from adobe forum in case anyone else wants to see. I'm beginner myself. So I might be doing it wrong as you said. No need to be hyper about anything. And you are doing good work. Cheers!

Also found this one, ""Use the Position parameter of a Text Animator to change the text position (Animation > Animate Text > Position) or Pre-Compose your animated text (Layer > Pre-compose...; Move all attributes) and then apply the masks in the containing Comp. Either of these will have the text moving before the mask.""

It would be a pretty big deal if Adobe silently changed the behavior of masks and core parameters. Works as usual just tested with the latest version to make sure.
