The fact that even a preschool show like Paw Patrol did it better than Velma is so hilarious.

The fact that an animated G-film based on PAW Patrol had a better portrayal of a panic attack than a supposedly "adult" animated series has me snickering. 🤭

I think tmnt 2012 did the “snap out of it” trope the best: “…did you just slap me?” “I was calming you down!” “WHY WOULD THAT CALM ME DOWN?!”

Fun fact, someone actually tried the "Snap Out Of It" trope on me. Because I was already so freaked out, I slapped them back, harder. I wound up apologizing profusely, but they understood completely, saying that they absolutely deserved it.

Honestly, “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish” did kinda, sorta made an accurate depiction of a ‘panic-attack’.

I had a few panic attacks. If I had been slapped, I think my "fight" response would have kicked in and I probably would have hit back as an instinctive response. I'm not comparing humans to dogs, but if a dog was panicking, you wouldn't hit the dog. So don't hit people!

I don't even know that I'd call the Wreck-It Ralph scene a panic attack. That's just primal fear, problem solving and comedy. Felix's reaction is entirely on the level of the situation he's in. The danger is completely real, not imagined or perceived.

The Owl House clip at 10:27 is interesting. There's a few seconds cut out , but Hunter runs away after Eda reaches her hand out to him. Eda herself has dealt with panic attacks and knew to give him space after a traumatic event. Except when Eda reaches out a hand that's supposed to ground Hunter, she unknowingly triggers him because of his history with physical abuse. It's subtle, but shows that there's no one size fits all solution to dealing with a panic attack. And a few episodes later, he finds a method that does work to calm him down.

Fun fact about the Paw Patrol one, Chase was originally going to have a nightmare where he has to do a similar save to the one with the rollercoaster, starts using the zip line but it fails and Chase ends up falling from the building height to the street Mufasa style. It gets worse, he doesn't just hit the road, he hits an oncoming car calling back to what would have happened to him if Ryder wasn't there when he was a stray. That could have traumatized all the kids.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the kind of animated stories that the industry should invest more. It’s a movie for everyone. It has fun moments that the children can have fun, but also has mature and deep themes than the adults can get behind. Velma is what we should NOT have more often in the animation industry. That show is a spit in the face to Scooby-Doo and to animation in general.

Like were not even talking about TV-Y7 shows like Avatar, we are talking about a show who's target audience is below the age of 6!

When Naruto hyperventilated, my world was changed. That seems intense, but that show meant a lot to a lot of people, and it was just so sudden. We've seen him scream and cry, and break down before, but that was just...so real. So bluntly underdramatic for Naruto, the show and the character. And yet it hit so hard.

My older sis has panic attacks brought on by a mix of agoraphobia and kenophobia. I've had to help her through quite a few panic episodes, not all of which I've handled correctly unfortunately, but I know what it's like from a secondhand perspective. Seeing media handle panic attacks correctly, not berating the characters for feeling scared and acting like a slap on the face or yelling at them will solve things, is so, so important.

There’s a scene in the first episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(2012) where Mikey encounters a Krang for the first time and starts having a panic attack. They did do the slap thing but Mikey just had the right response of going WHY WOULD THAT CALM ME DOWN?! But his brothers don’t really help him emotionally after that.

It irks me how quickly people (especially on Twitter) got tired of this new way to move forward with depicting mental issues in mainstream media. For years we get unrealistic and exaggerated depictions that harms how the public perceives mental illness, and now that recent animated movies are being more accurate and nuanced about it, people started... getting tired of it? I don't get it.

The thing I appreciated most about the scene in Puss in Boots was the demonstration of pressure therapy from a service dog. Puss in boots was such a hugely popular movie and I don't doubt people may be more educated now about what service dogs provide to people with anxiety--it is not uncommon to have a panic attack in a public place and have to lay down on the ground where you are (most people, me included, can pass out/collapse during panic/anxiety attacks so it can be dangerous to run around looking for a secluded place to calm down.) Education is important so people understand why they might see something like that in public, and less chance of bystanders trying to remove or interrupt the service dog. When I watched that scene, I felt so known and understood in that moment. To elaborate, pressure therapy works because pressure makes you conscious of breathing and helps slow heart rate. It's also used to help people with heart conditions stabilize their blood pressure. It's the same reason weighted blankets can help people with anxiety sleep.

Me to the kid sitting next to me in the theater watching Puss in Boots: This is an accurate representation of panic attacks.

i kinda hate how depression and anxiety are the only two forms of mental issues that are accepted to talk about. in fact not only okay - but people almost want to have anxiety - to be a victims. they glorify anxiety i feel. but other disorders - and celebs that have them or movie characters - it's still such a stigma. i hate this world edit: interesting how sharing this, it's apparently an open invitation for people to share all sorts of things 😳

I was honestly surprised to not see Arcane being mentioned here. Especially with the panic attack that Jinx went through at the very last scene of the show was something that impressed me greatly. Not only did it have an absolutely phenomenal visualization, but it also showed how much it can escalate if you say the wrong things to the victim, as Vi did there. The scene went absolutely wild once the panic attack escalated, and it did a really great job at putting the audience in Jinx's shoes, with everything moving extremely rapidly, and things only stopping once she snaps out of it, and realizes what she's done. There were many scenes before, that depicted her having a panic attack, but that is the one that stuck with me the most. The show deals with Jinx's mental issues extremely well, and it really deserves more attention.

As someone who LOVES Wreck-it-Ralph, and who has frequent panic attacks, I think the scene is handled well, but isn't perfect. It's supposed to be silly, but if Felix was never slapped, it would have never set up for them to escape the quick sand. The slap was needed, because when Felix was panicking, no other "funny" moment could happen. Although I don't like that he automatically calms down, I think this deserves A tier.

There's always room for Velma hate

The scene with Rocket and Thor didn't work though, Thor runs as soon as he can. Just because he got quiet after the slap doesn't mean "the slap worked", Thor was in shock and clammed up, which is something most people would do in that scenario. I would argue the scene shows that the response Rocket had doesn't work imo

hunter from owl house exemplifies a subtle yet deep-rooted panic attack ,,, he does it so well because of his realization of something he’s been so convinced of his entire life

The PAW patrol scene was 1000% my acrophobia summarized in a moment. The line where you said that someone shouldn't force him to continue or shout at him really hit hard. I have extremely bad acrophobia, but nonetheless, I made the dubious choice at summer camp to attempt a rope course. This was several years ago. Of course, the moment I found out that the end of the ropes course was a zipline, I freaked out and demanded that I get off the course. (There were actually other ways to get off the course outside of the zipline.) For some reason, the guide wasn't the most receptive or understanding of this fear and spent 20 minutes trying to force me to go on the zipline and caused me to have an emotional breakdown. (Crying, shaking, curling up, etc.) Eventually, they let me climb down, but I got the feeling they were already really annoyed with me.

Ted Lasso, that show perfectly describes a panic attack, and how to move on. It really is great development.

I know after the Spider-Verse short comes out, all of the internet will go "SO COOL THAT IT WAS INFLUENCED BY SPIDER-VERSE!" when any character has anything close to anxiety in animation.

Can we also talk about how absolutely INTENSE that scene was in Puss and Boots though? I swear I almost had a panic attack from the sheer stress I could feel from him.

I love how in the clip of Gumball, when Darwin started doing the snap out of it trope, he literally said something perfect, that he was making it worse. I’ve had a panic attack before, and, depending on the context, hitting them can and will make it worse. The context to the clip, where they think they’re going to be attacked, is not a good time for it. I love TAWOG and I’d totally recommend watching it if you somehow haven’t yet.

10:80 this is a scene from The Owl House, and I was waiting until the video was over to mention this moment to see if it would bring it up first. But since it didn’t brief over it, I will :) basically, the character Hunter is having a panic attack after experiencing a traumatic experience. The younger characters rush forward to comfort him, but the oldest there holds them back, telling them to give him space. He is unable to immediately communicate with them and throws off his cape, which had direct ties to the trauma he had experienced. He runs out of the house and the other characters call him but don’t follow, except for his bird. It is implied but not shown on screen he receives comfort from his bird (it’s a magic show, so the bird can communicate telepathically lol). Later in the series, Hunter nearly experiences another panic attack, but is told by another character to breath. They remove themselves from the situation and work on a breathing exercise together quietly, which breaks him out of his panic. Out of all panic attack scenes in kids shows, these were extremely accurately depicted and I would definitely recommend giving the show a watch :)

Can we talk about how far American animation has come in the last 20 years? So many great movies and moments nowadays.

Was glad to see you included Ladybug's panic attack from Strikeback. I felt that was handled really well tbh. Adrien did what he could to calm her down, and when that didn't work, he gave her privacy to detransform. If you haven't seen it, Ladybug gave the Dog Miraculous to Adrien's cousin Felix, thinking he was Adrien because they look alike, which he then used to steal Ladybug's yoyo to trade the other Miraculous to Shadow Moth for the Peacock Miraculous. When Ladybug realized what was going on, she started having a panic attack, because it was her job to keep the Miraculous safe and she failed. Also, if you haven't seen the show at all, the Miraculous are magic jewels that grant super powers, and Hawk Moth/Shadow Moth/Monarch (he changes his name when he gets new Miraculous) wants Ladybug and Chat Noir's so he can combine them and change reality with their powers of creation and destruction. So yeah, she had a pretty good reason to freak out. There was another episode recently that really tacked the source her anxiety and PTSD. There's this character named Chloe who's a spoiled brat that's been bullying Marinette(Ladybug) for years. Her dad is the mayor, and any time an adult gets involved, she threatens to call her daddy to get them fired, resulting in Marinette getting punished instead so they can save their jobs. Her parents also are no help, resolving to only tell her "don't worry, it'll get better next year because there's no way she'll be in your class AGAIN." This came to a head after Chloe convinced the boy Marinette liked to pull a really cruel and dangerous prank on her when she confessed. This really traumatized Marinette, to the point where when she would eventually fall in love with Adrien, she couldn't even manage to tell him how she felt.

As someone who had a panic attack on one of my closest friend's birthday 2 days ago, let me tell you, as much as people tried calming me down, the situation escalated so bad when a video I was making for the birthday person went all sorts of wrong, I had been working on it for 2 weeks, and it has caused me so much stress. Because the birthday friend was looking at the projector and had their back turned, they did not see my state and instead jokingly said comments like how bad we are at this and that we're such bad planners. My friend is a jokester and was trying to lighten the mood, but they were utterly clueless to the series of visible signs of my sheer panic. I just broke down crying in front of everyone and ran into the kitchen in another friend's lap, repeatedly saying loudly, "I can't take it anymore!" It took the friend helping me with the video, the birthday person, and the friend I was crying on their lap to get me to calm down. After that, I was just a mess and I still haven't contacted anyone from the party because I'm still ashamed and embarrassed. I have a strong feeling that I really upset the birthday friend because they really care about me, and that was the first time I broke down on what was supposed to be a day to celebrate and have a good time, but instead, I bit off more than I could chew and ended up in a terrible state. I really messed up. I hate panic attacks so much :(

When I think of a panic attack scene that's comical without being harmful, Bocchi the Rock comes to mind. We actually see what's going on in Bocchi's head and it's hilarious. And her friends just treat it as a normal thing, which is also really funny but super supportive at the same time. Now that I think about, a lot of anxiety/panic attacks happen throughout the show.

An interesting point I’ve heard on this topic is the concern that scenes that feature an anxiety attack will become selling points for movies and shows. Like studios will cram a panic attack in a trailer or borderline just brag about having one in the movie with the expectation that itll help sell the show or movie. I don’t think I’ve seen too many examples of this currently, other than the Spiderman short film, but I wonder what other peoples opinions are on this.

One really good example is in Steven universe “mindful education”. Id definitely check that one out, the entire episode is based on Connie’s stress/anxiety attack about something from school and it’s really good

I’m gonna give a stupid example but it’s important: In Rio 2, Roberto (yes, Bruno Mars’ character) is a character who has PTSD and he has panic attacks in the film, he even goes as far to start screaming stuff (repeating what he has said during the traumatic event as he relived it) to himself and not being able to listen to anyone. And my biggest issue with with that is that it’s mostly played up for laughs bc “haha smooth and suave character is actually a mess” and it does the stupid “snap out of it” trope. As far as I’m concerned (as someone with panic attacks), Roberto is a good example of someone with PTSD and panic attacks but the way it’s handled is awful.

A little curve ball but in the video game Celeste had a panic attack where Madeline and Theo were stuck on a gondala. Theo being the chill guy he is stayed by her and taught her a breathing and it was up to you the player ease Madeline's panic attack.

That is a great idea! I have a anxiety disorder, so I have panic attacks quite a bit now and then. When I saw Puss have one, I felt like crying and same goes for Chase in Paw Patrol. I find panic attacks in movies a bit underrated sometimes, but it’s great for character development as well, not just for comedic purposes.

Another animated one I'd like to mention is in Finding Dory. I had just started having panic attacks when I first watched it, and a scene in this movie nearly brought one out of me because of how uncomfortably realistic it was. Dory just found out that her parents likely died, and she started having a panic attack. The muffled sounds, the blurred vision, the hyperventilating, everything. Mediocre film, great depiction of a panic attack, much to my dismay at the time.

You included that one clip of The Owl House (10:27) as just "a character panics, it happens". And while plot-wise, that is the extent of it, it's a passing sort of scene--the way in which Eda in particular handles the situation is also S-tier. Luz and Hunter are brought back from the mindscape, and she immediately stops King and Hooty from crowding them. It's a small moment but this is huge!! From personal experience, being surrounded by people fussing and asking questions makes the panic (or really any heightened distress) so much worse. She asks if they're okay, but without insisting when they don't answer, and leaves them space to process. Luz is in silent shock, but Hunter quickly begins to hyperventilate. Eda doesn't know him, doesn't know what he just experienced, what he's freaking out about or what he needs to calm down, but stays grounded and simple: "Kid, breathe." She gives a placating gesture and offers him a hand to help him up and/or steady him. It doesn't work; tragically, Hunter's a victim of physical abuse, as well as conditioned to fear wild witches like Eda and her demons. He sees the hand held out to him and flinches, tries to get away, fearing both his former alliance/home and the people in front of him, and after a moment, sheds his cape, turns and runs out the door. After Luz's call out to him, they let him flee, because he's clearly scared of them and feels like he has to get away. You're left worried for him, but the characters handle it well, to the best of their knowledge and ability. And that's all not to mention the (much more character-development-moment) scene later, in the episode Labyrinth Runners, where he starts to panic and hyperventilate. Gus shows him a breathing exercise to help steady/ground himself, which made me really wonder why such simple, important techniques aren't shown in kids media more!

The Owl House has another panic attack scene (also with Hunter) and it was handled SO WELL, at least for me. I have had multiple panic and anxiety attacks too (and probably will have more) and the way it was handled in the show was pretty much how I deal with them. Hunter started to have a panic attack, and another character (Gus) sat with him and helped him calm his breathing. He taught him a breathing technique in case it happened again, and when Hunter calmed down a little, Gus talked to him about something else and the scene ended up with both of them laughing. Later in that same episode Gus is the one who starts to panic (because they're in a very life of death situation) and this time Hunter is the one who helps him calm down and I just love that episode 😭 when I finished watching them I 100% told my friends who also watch TOH because I related so much, that's the way I calm down!! I need to breathe, take some time to let it pass and then I really apreciate having someone to talk to so I can distract a little and if they manage to make me laugh that's all I can ever ask for!! Acurate panic attack scenes are important to teach people what to do if they or someone they know have one, but also because there's something very special in finally seeing something you struggle with be represented properly

Bojack did so many things really well. Even I use the looking around the room technique.

It would be cool to see an artistic, visual representation of a panic or anxiety attack. For example, the walls of the room pulsing in an out with every rapid breath; or the lights straining brighter and brighter, buzzing louder and louder as the anxiety increases.

While Puss in Boots is my favorite animated panic attack, Ted Lasso is easily the best in terms of realism and fear because the music mutes and rings, Teds fingers start to curl and he runs. It’s probably the most realistic depiction I’ve ever seen. When his friends find out they support him and talk him through it to calm him down and it’s genuinely great character building

I've had Panic Attacks several times in my life. If you are a filmmaker and you want to include a Scene with a Panic Attack, go ahead! (Just make sure it is made well and fits the story you are making.)

I've experienced a panic attack only once. My mother kept telling me to stop being dramatic and to just calm down, but when I did try to, I just panicked more and I was crying because my mom kept yelling at me. I did eventually calm down when I was by myself.

Hunters panic attack in hollow mind felt so real

Thor is WAY too strong for the slap to do anything to him other than get his attention. Rocket is so far beneath Thor that he would probably need to be a little physical just to make him listen for a second. AND that scene even shows that it doesn't work because Thor immediately leaves looking for booze. It's not until his mom talks to him that Thor's panic attack dies down.

The most realistic panic attack was Floor in guardians of the galaxy. (Witnesses Lylla sudden murder and screams "Rocket, Teefs, Floor, GO NOW!" )And she died with those distressful thoughts. I still can't get over this

I never really knew what panic attacks felt like until I had a medically induced panic attack when I was on a 3 day school trip. I have really bad asthma to the point where I can't breathe sometimes because of the inflammation of my air ways and the mucus in my lungs but it rarely ever gets to that point due to my parents both going through medical school and one of my parents being a full time doctor and knowing how to take care of me if it gets bad. But this time I didn't have my parents, i had my classmates, my teachers and i was 2 hours away from my city. I went to the 3 day school trip sick because I didn't want to miss out on it. On the second day of being there, we had just come back from a really long hike and we were hanging out in the cafeteria. I was coughing a lot because I overexerted myself so instead of taking 2-3 pumps of my inhaler, I took around 8-10. For people who don't have asthma, taking anymore than your regular dose of your inhaler can speed up your heart a lot so after 2 minutes my heart started to race which in turn, caused my lungs to compress and I panicked and that turned into a panic attack. Thankfully, I was sitting with my wonderful friends who almost immediately recognized what was happening and told the teacher.

I'm a younger person who tends to be vulnerable to panic attacks. I have a very visual mind, so my description of one is kinda odd. I wrote about it one time. It went like this: "He could feel his mind slip into monochrome tones." How I feel right before an attack is basically, disconnected. "Everything began to return in a violent wave of bright colors. His breathing picked up immediately, and his chest beat like a steel drum. A tickling feeling went up his spine and into his brain and neck. His face flet like it was painlessly melting into warm milk. That same milk would drip out of his eyes any moment now." I often refer to other people as "It" in this writing, because for me it feels hard to identify anything and anyone while having an attack. I don't know why I decided to comment this.

i don't really have attacks like this, but when i start dissociating or can't stop crying, my favorite way of grounding is the rainbow method. you look around the room for something in each color and concentrate on that color before letting it go and moving onto the next one. it really works for me, so i thought i'd share it here in case someone hasn't heard of that one :)

Its not a film or a show but i found that the panic attack scene in the game Celeste did an incredible job of portraying panic attacks and how to help people who suffer with them. 10/10

When I have anxiety or panic attacks, it’s generally the same. I’m rather quiet, with the different between to two is just how antsy I am during them. Sometimes people will assume there’s nothing wrong because ‘It’s just heavy breathing’

I think the problem is that it comes out of nowhere and really comes off as corny or forced in some shows, it worked for Puss because it tied back to his character arc of believing he was invincible. For other shows it feels almost PSA-like.

i never thought about how usually panic attack scenes are played for laugh. And that reminded me of the panic attack scene in metalocalypse, in the episode bookklok, where toki has a panic attack onstage and skwisgaar decides to defibrillate him and then toki slaps the defibrillator away causing everyone at the concert thingy to die. i'd put it in A

I have an anxiety disorder, and I never noticed just how many panic attacks I've had throughout my life until this video- wow, I'm really glad that media is getting good at displaying how to help people through things like this, I learned lots of new things in this video too. Thank you!

I don't really think it started because of Puss in Boots. I think the whole 'animated panic attack' discourse started because of how badly they were presented in Velma and PiB was used as an example of that being handled more appropriately.

As someone who likes to claim, they're a panic attack veteran (i havent found any techniques that have helped and ive been having them consistently since i was born.), the puss in boots scene gets me. I mean, if it were me, it would go on for 2 hours, but it was so accurately portrayed. I kinda teared up, man.

Fun fact: I have an anxiety disorder and while watching puss in boots in theaters that scene got dangerously close to triggering an anxiety attack for me that’s how realistic it felt. (Realistic anxiety attacks in shows is one of my triggers as it turns out) So hats off to the team for that one because they portrayed how it feels so well.

As someone with chronic anxiety, it really does make me happy with the good representation of Panic Attacks. I do wish for more of a- wider picture of anxiety, but it's really nice to see that they're recognised as something very debilitating and impactful.

My panic attacks are always more internal, so I've personally never seen a panic attack in a film feel "accurate" but I've found some feel true to the general experience of one and what can drive one. The Hollyhock scene is probably the closest a visual representation has felt to my experience though.

I think we can all agree that the worst/ funniest panic attack scene ever put in a movie belongs too... The woman from Air Plane.

The S teir animated scene for me, that actually had a profound effect when I watched it (as someone who suffers from diagnosed severe OCD), is in South Park where Craig is having relationship issues due to Tweak's worsening anxiety and panic atttacks, but then Craig learns/has an epiphany as to how to help Tweak properly get through one and it works. Made me tear up, lol. It's similar to grounding technique; one of my friends who also struggles with mental health (MDD) used it with me once to great effect, even though I kinda knew what she was doing.... but yeah, South Park of all places can get this stuff right! So wtf Velma?!

the panic attacks im well known with is the ones that hunter (from the owl house) has. he has two of them (that ik of.) one in “hollow mind” and “labrynth runners.” the characters who interacted with hunter didnt rush with him and knew what to do to help (mostly in labrynth runners. i think that specific episode is the best to show the panic attack)

Panic attacks are not fun, I have had far too many and I genuinely couldn't breathe. My dad made it worse by telling me to "stop crying". He did apologize afterwards but at the time it was awful

The thing with the “snap out of it” is that it can work. The slap isn’t always necessary but the aspect of getting someone’s attention can work. I’ve had panic attacks and the best thing that could have happened was for someone to hold my attention to help calm me down. But I do agree, hurting someone in a panic attack is not a good idea lol.

I had a panic attack in middle school before. I told my teacher about it on the note app on my phone and asked if can go outside for awhile to help with it. My friends went outside though to help me, but they surrounded me and I felt like I was trapped. I didn’t want to be near people for awhile because it honestly made things worse whenever I had a panic attack. I tried to tell them that I wanted to be alone but nothing came out of my mouth. My teacher, called them all in. After they all left I had calmed my self down and did the 3 3 3 rule.

Hey, it’s me again. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur even had an accurate panic attack too, but S2 spoilers. After facing off Molecule Man, and as she and The Beyonder were on their way back home, she had some panic attacks about the fact that she “wouldn’t stand a chance against the big bads of the Multiverse”. I heard her heart beating super fast and that scared look in her face…😢

There's a show, Alexa and Katie, where they portray a very accurate attack as well as ways to deal with it. It's very underrated and I loved the series. Throughout the show, they show how she starts developing anxiety and makes it make sense(not too sudden) and the way people support her, even the guy that's considered katie's(the girl who's having the attacks) rival, helps her out and it starts a good relationship. It shows how it starts, and what happens when it happens and I really liked it

There was a kind of panic attack scene in Bluey where Bandit failed to make a Duck Cake for Bingo, and he just plopped to the ground and curled into ball. He wasn't crying, he wasn't making noises, he wasnt screaming, he was just sitting in silence. Like we alwasy see him as goofy, silly and funny father, and then at this moment, when he wanted to make a great surprise for Bingo, he failed at it, and he just was overwhelmed.

You did such a nice job explaining these scenarios. I was also shocked to see Chase having an anxiety attack like that too…the fact that a Nick Jr franchise explained an anxiety attack hit me. I felt bad for Chase so deeply. I saw the PAW Patrol movie and loved it a lot. Especially Puss In Boots 2, Miraculous Ladybug, Avengers Endgame, Ralph, Owl House and Gumball. Didn’t see Velma although (and I never will and I don’t wanna!). Other panic attacks that I know are when Dory in Finding Dory had the panic attack when she thought she lost her family but then she did find her family, and when Marinette (Miraculous Ladybug, episode: Derision) was having panic attacks about her flashbacks to Chloe’s pranks. You did an amazing job explaining everything. Well done. I am excited for PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie 2.

I feel like the portrayal of panic attacks on children's shows are SO incredibly realistic for no reason Like they can show EXACTLY how it *feels* from an inside perspective but also how it *looks* from an outside perspecitve and im left thinking "why is that so well done??" That's the case in miraculous, paw patrol, puss in boots and so many others Its also something done in adult shows and it can be very well done and amazingly portraid like in arcane but i feel in adult shows its more common that theyll pull a velma and put it as a joke or as a way for the character to manipulate others into pitty-ing them and its so annoying Why is that so switched?

As someone who suffers from panic attacks a lot and loves The owl house Hunter’s panic attack really made me feel some type of way and I think was rlly well done. (Also the way Eda tries to comfort him, I just want her every time I have one now)

I personally have panic attacks due to pretty severe social + generalized anxiety. It's honestly a lovely thing to see shows accurately depict them, or at least TRY to accurately depict them, because I seriously can sympathize with the character in the moment. I feel like animated shows are beginning to get better at properly portraying mental health struggles in an accurate and non-stereotypical way, and that's such a wonderful thing because it adds an extra layer of inclusivity that nobody ever really thinks about. With just one character, someone in real life suffering from depression or anxiety can feel just a bit less alone in the world, because they can see that someone- somewhere- has seen similar hardships, and understands their everyday struggle. But anyways, yeah, Velma sucks.

I think the “snap out of it” thing comes from the idea that shock will kinda overpower the crushing fear of a panic attack. But what people don’t realize is that shock can be a fear response. If the way someone is responding to a life threatening situation is with shock, then a shocking action like a hard slap will not overweigh their fear. You wouldn’t suddenly be able to focus if you had a gun to your head and someone slapped you. In the same line, if someone’s having a panic attack, they are experiencing the full force of the fight or flight response. A hard slap will not pull them out of their fight or flight response because now you’ve given them a REASON to be scared. And if that panic attack was triggered by something (ex: alcohol or fireworks), which it isn’t always, then now their association with that trigger that was originally all in their head is REAL. So now they have something to direct their **fight** at, or something to run away from. And if you’re the slapper, that thing is YOU.

Another great panic attack example is Pablo's portrayals through the first two seasons of The Backyardigans, it's humorous yet also empatethic; the perfect balance using the classic 'snap out of it' method. And speaking of Bluey, the show got a less drastical way to portray a panic attack; in the episode "Movies", Bluey gets anxious by attending the cinema for the first time, as a scary scene shows up, she has a minor panic attack, her dad notices and kindly offers her to leave the cinema by taking her hand. It's a less conventional depiction, but quite opportune and significantly felicitous; not to mention exceedingly appropiate considering the girl's young age.

There's also a couple scenes in Alexa and Katie that do a good job of portraying panic attacks. In the season 2 finale, Katie starts getting overwhelmed before taking her ACTs. She hyperventilates and says that she felt like she was dying. Alexa then sits down next to her and assures Katie that she's here for her, which is the right way to handle it. In season 3 when Katie is closing up the coffee shop where she works, she gets nervous being alone and has another attack. When her coworker comes by the shop and sees what's happening, he sits Katie down, and tries to get her out of her panic attack by distracting her with funny small talk, which works.

a fun irl fact: once, in middle school, my friend saw me start semi-freaking out and then thought 'ah yes, this would be a perfect time to slap my friend in the face like they do in the movies' and she did. it did nothing except cause me to slap her back (because why the fuck would someone do that in real life) and my mom almost went down to the principles office to get her in trouble for smacking a student. dont slap people when they're having panic attacks, kids.

I haven't seen anyone talk about the one from miraculous ladybug, but i think that it's handled SO well. As someone who has constant, long panic attacks, it was really refreshing to see ladybug experience a bit of a "longer" one than commonly portrayed in the media (then again, it is rare to see mental health even acknowledged in modern television, so props to any filmmakers who've incorporated examples). Ladybug's fast breathing and shaky words are incredibly accurate, I could literally feel her panic. Her mind is going a million miles a minute as if her world is turning upside down and that is exactly what a panic attack feels like (shout out to Cristina Valenzula!). Adrien also trying to comfort her is amazing; he bends down to her level and talks to her calmly despite all the chaos happening. After this, he lets her go in his bathroom for privacy, which is also sometimes required during a moment of heightened anxiety. The sense of sheer panic, stress and worry in this scene is captured so nicely that it feels extremely real. While Puss in Boots is an EXCELLENT example, this one somehow felt more raw and intense, often what attacks actually feel like.
