Tadayoshi Yamamuro was at the top of his game in the 90's, being promoted to animation supervisor, then character designer after the departure of Minoru Maeda.
However, today let's flick back specifically to 1995 with the movie Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn or known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection Fusion!! Goku and Vegeta, and breakdown among one of his top sequences on the show!
Hope you'll enjoy it!

Just a one off, but I noticed in DBFZ that Cooler 5th form and Janemba are very similar in character design. Other than that I think it's unique. I'm sure there's a whole chain of characters similar to each other, building from the first to the last.

The thing I liked about the later movies was that the directors at the time knew how to make the line work clean while still retaining its variety and roughness without it going off model. And the older movies tended to stay on model a lot more consistently if not seamlessly compared to the modern stuff.

Hot take but I think it actually did look a lot better to show clear choreography between the characters, which is what makes martial arts movies, and fights in general more interesting to watch, rather than the characters just darting around the screen with obnoxious camera angle shifts and rapid movements like they do in BoG and DBS Broly. That is something I feel like modern DB animation lacks, while it tends to lean too much focusing on making things more flashy and "cool" rather than flowing and memorable. This fight and SS2 Goku vs Kid Buu are my favourites because of the clear choreography.

@GeteMachine
@GeteMachine 2 года назад
@@alexism9656 Super's fights are bad because they're generic movements and very repetitive. The AATATATATATATATATATA meme came from that. While any time the animators just focus on the power ups and explosions it ends up poorly showing believable scaling between the characters due to how we naturally think the flashier fights are the stronger characters are. Even compared to the original Broly film and most of the movies, the fights always had clear choreography and consistent scaling between the characters in the fights. After Z, all they do is just over the top exaggerated stuff for superficial hype. A lot like Mastarmedia's fanmade stuff.
@alexism9656
@alexism9656 2 года назад
@@GeteMachine You're completely ignoring all the times Super was good and all the times Z was bad. I'll admit, late Z was more consistant than Super, but Z also did all the things that people complain about in Super and Super also did the things people praise in Z. I can't say Goku said "atatata" a lot in Z, because I watch dub, but he still definetly did that type of animation.

the fighting being kinda slowed down makes every hit feel that much more impactful and makes every swift movement feel that much more chaotic (in a good way). especially when janemba forms his sword and the fight gets serious. goku's knee into that spin kick and janemba's teleport and ki blast are some of my favorite parts of this fight. every fight scene in this film is a pleasure to look at.

I can't begin to imagine what a pain in the ass animating that teleport in traditional would've been. It's a simple portrait shot but you can even see in his sketches that he had to very VERY carefully plan out how and where each piece would fit over a "normal" frame and then design and move it piece by piece as it's own unique 3D part. And then coloring so each part of each individual piece changes colors each frame... jesus christ Yamamuro was nuts

This is actually the first Dragonball anime I've seen as a teenager. I was absolutely amazed and still am by the fight scenes in it. The pace and the actions/reactions of the characters make it interesting, we can actually follow what's going on instead of trying to figure out the action in a flurry of high speed FX as we can see in many modern action scenes. No disrespect, just my feeling. And Janemba's teleportation is just insane. The sound effects too are awesome, just like when goku's hand rotates in complete silence. Damn I love that movie.

I love the keyframes in this fight, but one of my main issues with dragon ball post cell saga is it felt like the characters became punching bags for each other without the types of fights like we saw between piccolo + 17, vegeta and recoome, cell vs goku, that it felt harder to gage how much stronger a person was, we saw huge sky covering blasts between cell and gohan but then in the next saga it's back to smaller type blasts and normal levels of destruction (which I could somewhat understand it being earth, but this is some type of shadow realm, have them show off :P). I'm probably in the minority but I feel the same way about the Majin Vegeta vs Goku fight and this janemba one. I don't know what exactly about the more recent stuff has made me feel that way but thought I'd mention it. Still some great stuff though.

The biggest mistake DBS has made is making SSj3 obsolete. SSG,SSB&UI don't make Goku look like a warrior that is bursting with raw power&steely resolve. The only form that comes close to SSj3 in terms of viciousness is SSj4 which is unfortunately non-canon. Toriyama changed the eyes of Goku in SSJ because he wanted to make Goku's gaze to terrify freeza. SSJ3 is the form that nails the "antagonistic stare" Toryiama was looking for in Namek Arc. This is just my opinion but i think Yamamuro's design of SSJ3 is the best. Without that Z yamamuro jawline, SSj3's face kinda looks derpy&blobby, you can see that in Super and even in some panels of Z manga.

Its really the overuse of the ugly highlights. I still like is Z era models a bit more than Shintani's because the angularity and longer faces just look better. It makes the characters feel stronger and have volume to them. Yamamuro's problem was the gradual decay he had giving them more of a blockier anatomy after Z. It just decayed over time. Yo Son Goku & Friends was the only time Yamamuro's designs didnt have that glossy, plastic post-Z. The colors were generally better, which made his designs looked better. Like in Z.

The simple answer is he didn't watched any other anime outside of what he worked on leading to his work getting stale. He also seemed to have got comfortable with were he was skill wise. SS3 Goku vs Janemba is a well choreographed fight and shows that DB battles doesn't always need the fighters moving at hyper speed for it to be great. GT might have more staff to help with their episodes. Uchiyama's episodes still stand out badly. His work could be better if he had more staffers on his team. I think he has the lowest staff studio. This movie has alot of cut out scenes that makes the storyboard kinda inconsistent, for example hisada had a lengthy cut with ssj2 Goku that never made the final movie, so he only had like 2 cuts we know of that are of any note, it's really odd lol, I assume this cut has inconsistent angles and characters facing in different angles than the last cut for the same reason, but who knows lol, good video regardless, I never understood people saying yams timing is "too slow" I enjoy that most about his work that u can actually see what's happening, unlike shida for example, sry for the long winded comment lol

Yeah man I was leaning to the same conclusion in regards to some of out of place shots, definitely the most likely reason.

Its sad to see that DragonBall being the masterpiece it is doesn't get the same treatment in terms of animation quality like the dbz movies did, or some episodes. I mean cmon its one of if not the most popular anime and they're just gonna let dbs look as silly as it does?

Kinda everything you mentioned haha. I started taking art seriously in 2017, drawing every day, then went to University in 2018 with a course that covered art and graphic design. Then continued on with other online courses/books throughout the following years :)

@forgottenrelics1197 2 года назад
It's not uncommon for there to be unused cuts within a sequence and my guess is that 4:18 was a leftover from that (Hisada's ssj1 scene in this film is an example), could be wrong, but regardless it still seems to be an error in terms of framing.
@Memarzuq

@@forgottenrelics1197 You know animation better than me, so you may be right. But I always thought that maybe Goku faked out Janemba as if he was gonna strike from behind but instead hit him head on to essentially "sneak" a clean hit
@forgottenrelics1197
@forgottenrelics1197 2 года назад
@@Memarzuq That's not a bad conclusion, again though I wonder if he was originally animated to have teleported behind, but that cut was removed. The fact that Goku appears in a bunch of speed lines much like when using instant transition definitely makes it possible.

Super Saiyan 3 looked so much better back when the hair used to move and fall behind Goku, rather than to the side. Depending on how it's drawn, SS3 is simultaneously both the best AND worst looking form in the series.
@forgottenrelics1197
@forgottenrelics1197 2 года назад
I'm kinda unsure what you mean, the overlapping action of hair can vary depending on what direction the character is moving, so sometimes having it swinging off to the side is a valid approach. Could you give an example of what you meant :)
@jamesr6959

@@forgottenrelics1197 I was unsure what I meant too. That comment is a bit mindless upon reflection. I‘ve gone back and looked at the SS3 designs, and I’ve discovered that I just really like the design a lot better from the front or back than from the side or 3/4. Toriyama’s very first manga panel of SS3 is 3/4! Thanks for helping me clear up this nebulous misconception I’ve held!

Am I the only one who finds Yamauchi’s direction repetitive to the point that it gets unoriginal? Though his work on DBZ movies is the best work of his career (which the very dynamic and stylish flair of the animators contributed to), there’s a lot of reused camera shots even here with a lot of focus on the feet or hands; which in the case of DBZ since kicks and punches are an essential key factor, it absolutely works but for people who know his work post DBZ namely on Saint Seiya, Digimon or Sailor Moon, sometimes it just feels out of place and suffocating to the viewer. God knows how many times I’ve yawned before scenes of the characters walking to the screen. He also loves to show characters with ‘poker faces’/confused faces trying to mimic the acting style of the 90/2000 of J-dramas which hopefully didn’t blend in DBZ. Also as good as the explosions’ intensity are here, thankfully it was before he started to fade into his so called ‘contemplative’ style; like in the disaster of the 13th 2003 Saint Seiya OAV whereby the most destructive and important explosion is done… off-screen… and focusing on the damages unrelated to the actual attack itself.
@forgottenrelics1197
@forgottenrelics1197 2 года назад
I think in isolation it's fine, your general viewer probably hasn't watched every single one of the aforementioned shows, so any formulaic tendencies would go in most cases go unnoticed. For me personally though, if work can deliver impact despite repetitive traits, I'm fine. But then again you seemed to have studied his work far more than I have so forgive me if I'm downplaying any major problems haha.
@ricchan_108
@ricchan_108 2 года назад
@@forgottenrelics1197 Personally I never was particular intrigued by his work despite in my childhood, his work was all over animes I consumed namely DBZ and Saint Seiya. It’s only as an adult I inadvertently started to spot the traits of his work that were very easy to pin-point. And sometimes it really works well, sometimes it’s just feels uninspired. I tried to watch Casshern Sins which was the last major work of his to date but I honestly couldn’t get into it - the dank expressions of the characters, 90% of the time the characters are just talking with each other from a distance of 10m with no work on the atmosphere or lighting (it’s supposed to be a desolate world, but still build the scene!) even the fight scenes though good are damped with YamauchiTM with no ‘new’ stuff - characters flying from a distance to deliver kicks, punches that have no weight, quick unnecessary cuts on the torso, arms,thighs (places that are not even targeted by the kicks/punches), characters with the ever so ‘what is my life’ expression on the face… Though it seems his work on the street fighter movie is really good! It seems that when Yamauchi is given restrictions like in the 90s, he does good stuff but when he is given full liberty (Digimon & Saint Seiya 2000 movies/CS), it’s either a hit or miss or worse complete boredom. Personally as much as I’m thankful for his work on DBZ, I honestly don’t want him on the franchise again since we’ll probably have a movie with always hearing the characters getting beaten but never see the actual scene but only it’s aftermath…
