Have you seen the OG genga of that Ohira run circle and the effects? what do you think about yuasa's studio post processiong and flash pipeline and flattening and how it affects animator individuality. In general I like it but there is an argument to be made that it kinda minimizes and smothers some of the personality and details and effects of animators like Ohira
Hi, could you react to Mob Psycho 100's animation? Its one the best I've seen and its written by the same author who wrote One Punch Man but the two were animated by different studios. Studio Bones did Mob Psycho 100, its the same studio that did My Hero Academia.
The reason why it looks like they're being pulled by their waist is because they ARE. The odm gear they are wearing is connected to their waist and when they shoot that string out it pulls them by their waist (obiously haha)
ÆNIMEMAX-TV not just the fight scenes, the entire thing is animated amazingly (not like Demon Slayer where people say it has amazing animation because of fire effects)
Making hand drawn animation will take longer but it makes it much smooth as butter and makes much more better. It looks simple but if you make one it will take you alot of time.
Just as an added note, the guy also pushes with his waist because odm gear shoots the anchor from the users hips. This acts as a way to direct where the hooks shoot.
AOT: fast but SO fast that can be overwhelming. MHA: transition of slow and fast. That's an interesting perspective. AOT's world is so cold and unforgiving. It doesn't give a shit whether you can keep up or not. But MHA is such a shonen work that needs to emphasize the dramatic tension between characters so the underlying social critique won't be so in-your-face.
Honestly, I feel like if you’re gonna react to attack on Titan animation, you’re gonna have to react to the Levi Scene in Season 3 Episode 2. That was the best animation I’ve ever seen, anywhere. Ever
My favorite has to be Levi vs Beast Titan, but it might be for the episode it is in, "hero", just the hypest episode in the whole series, and Levi totally destroys Zeke
Every scene is the way it is for a reason. AOT is meant to be overwhelming and cruel. BNHA is about self growth and development, it's not meant to be overwhelming, it's meant to show you power and strong will
@@jaydee6574 You said exactly what I was thinking. Each show's animation works in the context of the anime and the moment in the anime. Like with AOT, it was fast because Levi was fleeing for his life through a crowded city while he was the only target of a large group of people with similar gear who were hunting him down to kill him, so of course he was moving quickly. It was pretty much like an escape sequence in video game, you only have so much of a chance to escape before something in the environment or people in the environment kill you before you can make it out. MHA is slow because it shows Todoroki's focus and confidence with his final attack after spending years holding himself back due to inheriting part of his power from someone who abused him. Just because there are things that often work in animation as a whole, doesn't mean they'll always work, context is everything.
@@officialAlexisMaun not really. most of their scenes are slow paced scene to scene attacks with maybe a big final attack with good animation. the only scenes I can think of with pure sakuga is deku vs kaachan 2 and the first fight between the 2 villains in season 4.
Oh I really like Violet Evergarden’s animation. I love that most of the time it’s the whole body of the character moving and gesturing whenever they speak.
If you don't mind imma steal that idea for my DnD campaign. Guns are in the "present, but rare" category in my game, and it just sounds like a cool name for a magitek firearm I've been thinking of. Also, just did a wiki dive and it turns out a Wimshurst Machine is type of electrostatic generator. Only a paragraph in, but going by the pictures it looks steampunk as hell en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimshurst_machine
1:12 I don't think the body has to do nothing very specific for the legs to move like that The legs are shaking and the knees are dropping a little, almost getting ready to fight being panicky/agitated/nervous and angry, I guess they exaggerated it a little xd Great stuff!
i think it is meant to feel chaotic he's an incredibly skilled person fighting for his life, being chased around the city by who knows how many trained soldiers who are trying to kill him best animation ever.
It ACTUALLY is made to be meant like that to SHOW how it would look irl and to show how fast paced and INTENSE the scene is so u don't even get a sec to blink and keep ur eyes fking guarded on screen which actually MAKES it a "storytelling through animation" to show how in one breath they could lose their heads and im glad it was made in that fasty way as its actually chaotic thing going on in story itself but it was in a directed manner like order in chaos and it really was a smart way to execute it. U really need MIGHTY UNIVERSAL LEVEL OF SKILLS to do that and If u follow what's happening, happened in story it MAKES A LOT OF SENSE why they made it like that it's really a good scene, non the way, how others say it or not.
True. Besides, I feel like it was meant to be as erratic and chaotic. It makes it feel like Levi was barely keeping up with the highly-trained assassins. That they're not giving him a break. And he still wiped the floor with them. I personally found it more intense than most of their battles against titans.
I never thought I will see a day when someone will complain about levi chase scene. Everyone is blown away seeing that for the first time. Nakamura's impact frames are good and I'm not an expert on animation but to me Imai's work is WAY more impressive with all the camera movements and such a high fps. How can someone expect everything to be slowed down during an intense chase lol. Levi vs beast titan is still his best animated scene though. Nakamura has done some incredible scenes but todoroki one doesn't even come close to how good imai's chase scene is.
both are impressive and complex in their own ways. Levi chase scene had different camera and dynamic use of the environment to emphasize chaos and tension. Deku vs todoroki had excellent use of buildup with different techniques blended so perfectly(the impact frames, smears and cross flares) an average animator would tear their hair off just to decipher how yutaka did it. considering the whole animation itself would've been a clusterfuck of mess if it was done even slightly off
Great content. You should do more animator analysis from legends like Ohira, Inoue, Itano,YohYoshinari, Muraki, shinji Hashimoto, Norio Matsumoto, Okiura, Yoshinari Kanada, Ando, Koji Morimoto, Kameda,Obari etc etc for some video. Going through their top sakugabooru posts etc.. I would love to see maybe a breakdown of some things certain ones are famous for. Like Itano's circuses and introduction of 3 dimentionality in air combat, Anno's explosions or Kanada's effects and how they influenced everyone
@@nrdnation in general the entire trigger yoh Yoshinari, imaishi style and school of animation that is basically a love letter to Yoshinari Kanada's animation and legacy would be a great video
If you plan on doing a lot of these reactions, you might want to break them down into shorter or one-series videos; it'll give you more content to space out, and minimize the chance that a bad day of copyright claims takes out one big video you did on multiple animations.
It's funny because "reactors" get away with just watching the video and not even putting in any decent commentary get away with it but videos like these will get copyrighted
I missed this kind of content from you, furthermore when I'm starting to be study Animation and investigating about sakuga and genga artists, so love to hear you talking even if it's only 20 min or less, you're great
As always great vid. 8:52 fun fact: satoru utsunomiya to my knowledge was first to draw cubic debris for his animations, e.g yu yu hakusho #26 and fullmetal alchemist the sacred star of milos
I really love animation and how animator manage to make awesome shot like this. Thanks for the video, it’s really cool to see you watching these japanese anime scenes with an occident/western animator vision
I'd love to see your breakdown of fight scenes in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I like the animation in the show, but the show as a whole has no Ma.
It's nice to hear the perspective of a person that isn't biased, however, there are a few things that -if you had had context- you would've known why they did it the way the did.
@@barley2469 I know. Those things are what I was talking about. Those vfx are too distracting to focus on the actual 2d animation. I'm contrast of lighting, they give more light on the vfx while the characters are let dim
So interesting to see your input on this I never thought someone would complain about AoT legs and say so much good stuff and My Hero Academia's explosions lol, really new opinions to consider. It shows a bit of the Oscar's effect where experts really see things different from normal people, I'm so surprised that you prefered Wolf Children over AoT sexy daddy Levi, but you still give your reasons that I don't share but make sense
Omg yeeees! A video about Mononoke would be epic... An incredible way of using 3d and 2d animation... It has a very unique visual style... Beautiful anime 👍
Awesome video, I could feel not only your great knowledge of the anime industry, but your profound passion for animation. You have just gained a new subscriber.
I love the talk of Todoroki’s animation so much. The reason that impact frame on Todoroki hits so bright when his hand sparks up rather than when it makes contact with Deku is because the biggest moment of this scene is not the physical fight between the two. While him fighting Deku is an important moment in the story, the more overwhelmingly important moment thats been lead up to is the fact that Todoroki is a person with 2 powers but absolutely refuses to use his left side’s power due to abuse from his father, who he gets that left side power from genetically. And the IMPACT of the scene is Todoroki accepting that he is not his father for simply having his genes, but rather that DESPITE his relation to the man that hospitalized his mother, that beat him as a child, and is all around a horrible human being... that despite all of that he is his own person and, to quote deku “IT’S [HIS] POWER” not his fathers. And the big burst on his hand is THE moment Todoroki accepts this reality and THAT is the game changing story changing moment worthy of its own absolutely massive flashy impact frame. Even if it may appear early in a fight to have such a large impact frame before any contact against an opponent has been made, its Nakamura using this, not just to make an important fight impactful, but to celebrate the story he’s working on directly in his visual work that goes beyond just “I’m the best of the best lemme show my stuff in this important scene.” Its him knowing the scene inside and out and how to best use his skills to make a fight not just look good, but also make sure each important moment in that fight gets its moment to shine.
To give a different recommendation For me, personally, Hajime no Ippo's fights scenes are the best hand to hand fight scenes I've ever seen, especially in "overselling" the impact and effect of each punch. Sadly I don't have the technical know how to explain WHY I love those scenes and what they do to get that reaction from me.
amazing video man ^_^ but i wonder if you saw Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works ?? or Fate Stay Night Heaven's Feel Movies?? would you please react on them?
You should react to demon slayer : Kimetsu no yaiba ep19 tanjiro vs rui To me its a really awesome animation just by watching it, its inspire me to do an animation
just a note on aot: The smoke trails are from their gear. The devices on their waistband has a gas that shoots out to propel them in the air so that they can change direction and maneuver easier. If you already knew that I apologize just thought I'd mention it.
Hey Howard, Im desubscribing (animation it's really not my thing, don't have the patience), so I wish you success (however you define it) in your artistic career. A hug from Argentina. Farewell space cowboy
Hey Howard, awesome video! I'd love to see you react to and break down the animation from Dragon Ball Super Broly. In particular, the Vegeta vs Broly and Gogeta vs Broly fights respectively. That film might have some of the most beautiful animation ever created.
I think Arifumi Imai made Levi scene quick and active because he attempted to give visual appeal to the character and it worked, his quick movements are not only exotic and for show-off, it gives you those goosebumps and feeling of excitement and tells us more about the character, even if you're an anime fan...or not, sometimes, you'll still feel that inspiration. It's easier to understand the problem the character is facing, he is trying to NOT to get killed, but, people are tryna kill him that sort of thing. It makes sense that the character needs to move quickly, pronto! Also he made levi fast to show he has skills, and is strong. Just hope your eyes and brain can keep up. He probably did it that way to show off his amazing animating skills. (ಥ﹏ಥ)so fine~ and graceful. Anyways, Yutaka Nakamura made his animation scene normal but momenty, zooming in to the main character to show off that determination and focusing on his quirk, cutting in slow and fast motion, to make it soooooooo dramatic. It's a jaw-dropping presentation only by placing the spotlight on Todoroki. Since they had a conversation before the fight, we understand where this is going. Attack on Titan Levi scene is like; gotta go fast, ain't nobody got time for standing and chilling around, he has got to get moving unless you want him to die, OF COURSE NOT!!!, AOT world is so cold, ruthless and cruel, what else-type of animation do you expect? slow and gentle... Dude, that baby stuff doesn't work in that type of place, and a situation like that, forget playin it safe, in fact, playing it safe, would be scary. My Hero Academia-Todoroki scene is focusing on body language and extreme zoom in. I really like how the two animators used fast and slow traits for the mood in both movies. If you an anime-type animator, pick one or two things from their work to apply to yours and practice it. It's gonna help you a lot! Thanks for reading😊
Animation styles definitely have their technical aspects. But they also serve the tone of the story being told. So in Attack on Titan, the frenetic animation is meant to reflect how the protagonists feel. Nervous, unsure, jittery. The camera or the effects don't calm down, because this is war, nothing ever calms down. Whereas in MHA, time and care is taken to carefully show Todoroki using his fire side for the first time. That is the point of that arc - what everything was building up to. This is a celebration of someone embracing his own identity, for the first time. That's why there's buildup, things slow down, and when he finally uses fire, it's pure awe. Neither of these scenes / animations are superior or inferior to each other. They serve different storytelling purposes.
I am Dreaming? Howard reacting and breakdown to my favourite studio wits and animator arifumi 😍👌 I hope you do more anime sakuga videos there really good and you would like Nataoshu shida style
He said in the past that he didn't like Naotoshi Shida, said that all of his works looked the same because have the same timing all the scene and the same camera movements
I really like seeing those roughs, like at 10:47. There's something pleasing about that roughness that is lost in the final images, and I sometimes feel like all that cleaning up doesn't really add much to the whole thing. If the roughs were cleaned up just a _tiny_ bit (like fill in the blank frames that are probably there for timing purposes) as well as having added some rough coloring, I feel like I'd like the end result way better than the actual finished anime.
I just watched your Vimeo. sad to see things being cut out. I love your new camera it looks very professional and I also like the mini advice aka the mini look into smearing. It felt a bit long/prolonged but that's fine by me, I'm just thinking with people and attention span. Overall great video and I'm excited to see your video next week!
Hey Howard! What does animation mean to you? Why should people care about animation when it isn't essential for survival? I love your videos and animation and art of course. I've noticed more and more that I have to continuously defend its importance in the world to my family and I wanted to get your take on it.
Hey M.G. thanks for the question. You know, I always figured that was a question I didn't need to answer - I make videos for people who already love animation, and I don't care about the ones who laugh at it. But the way you have put it - the fact that you need to justify your career choice to your family makes me realize that it is something that I should talk about. I'm working on a script, but in the meantime, I found this video / essay to have a lot of inspiring answers when it comes to art in the grand scheme of history. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YbgnlkJPga4.html Centuries from now, everything you and I have done might be long gone. My artwork/ animation is like my little hand print on the wall of the cave. And hey maybe they don't care about that, in which case you can say that you can make a lot of money as a commercial artist. Six figure salaries are common for experienced draftsmen, storyboarders, animators, directors. animation is connected to several multi-billion dollar industries, and the internet is an even bigger emerging market which involves visuals of all kinds. RU-vid is the dominating force of the internet. Does your family have RU-vid accounts? I bet they do. RU-vid is a VIDEO platform. AUDIO VISUAL. Our time is now. It's a gigantic commodity, with no sign of slowing down. It is a bottomless well of fortune, no exaggeration. Take it from me, I am thriving here. Sure it's hard work, and I always approach it tactically (most don't), but I'm earning more than my old school friends of the same age. Every year i've more than doubled what I made in the last year.
@@HowardWimshurst You know, I was worried I had worded the question wrong, but I'm extremely grateful you understood what I was trying to say and responded with a very supportive and caring answer. You can tell you really put time into answering it carefully, and I greatly appreciate the video you linked. It was profound and inspiring. Like a little beam of hope. And really, just receiving your answer was like someone supporting me, guiding me up, believing I could achieve what I set out to do and I really needed that. Thank you, Howard.
(Disclaimer- I don't watch BNHA, so apologies to any fans in the comments if I make y'all cringe at my terminology, lol) In the shot where Todoroki activates his quirk at 11:00, I personally felt that the directional lines, his forward-leaning stance and his slow movements also helped create a feel of very strong resistance, which I really enjoyed while seeing this shot for the first time (and still ove about it currently). It makes him look a lot more powerful and shows that he has an insane amount of control over this ability. The way Nakamura draws the fire streaming behind him makes it look like what you see from afterburners in fighter jets, which gives it way more impact than if he were to just draw shorter, more organic-looking flames, which helps exaggerate the whole scene more and adds to the points I mentioned above. Those two shots basically make Todoroki feel like a human F-16, which I feel like makes him come off as an extremely skilled and formidable fighter (that can also explain why he's straining like you mentioned during the hand shot). The contrast between fast effect animation and slow body movements can also emphasise how calm and in-control he is in the moment. Sorry if this is kind of a surface-level analysis, I'm still trying to improve at it.
You need to look at several scenes from Attack on Titan season 3. Especially Levi vs the beast titan. They had a freelance animator come in to do some scenes. I can’t remember his name, but he does some astonishing work.
You should react to animation by Monty Oum Like on Red vs Blue, season 9 episode 10 is my personal favorite. It’s really dynamic with great one shot camera work
