I worked on 25 of the first 26 episodes of Jay Jay The Jet Plane. I was a lead at David B. Sharp Productions, and we built really extensive miniatures in different scales of the airport, the town, various houses and buildings, and different environments for each episode. It was a TON of work. I would then dress the miniature sets for the "shoot", which was really a small crew with an early DSLR shooting plates for the CGI characters. Those plates were taken into Photoshop and cleaned up or augmented, like skies being added or backgrounds extended. We would shoot one shot with foam core cut-out versions of the characters to frame everything and give reference, then we'd pull out the little cut-outs and shoot a clean plate. When it came to the CGI, which I admit I did not see a lot of that process, I know there were "digital input devices" that were basically assembled shapes of the different characters, cut from white delrin, that had input sensors on them that when calibrated could recreate in the computer the motion of a puppeteer moving the device on a surface or in the air. The devices had a pretty good bundle of cables coming out of them. As for the faces, I think there was an attempt to make that a "real time" process as well, but that was less successful. All the filming and production was done at an old facility of some kind near Point Mugu in Southern California, where the rumor was they used to assemble missiles! Despite the less "appealing" design, it was quite popular with little kids at the time. Working on Jay Jay actually gave me bragging rights in some circles, especially with parents who could sit their kids in front of the TV for a half-hour!

For me the most impressive part about the Encanto "under the bed" scene is how much effort was put into the breathing animations, how the body expands and contract and the clothing and hair's movement in relation to that. It really feels like they are actually breathing

I appreciate what Alex is doing here. You can tell he's a true student of the human-centered ART of animation, and subtly trying to push the Crew away from their recent "AI for everything" kick. He came today with an excellent bunch of auteur animators, from the extremely subtle and fine acting choices in Encanto and Strange World, to extremely stylized motion of Cas' recaps and Genndy. None of which the computer will ever be able to invent by itself. He's making a strong case!
@himan12345678
@himan12345678 6 месяцев назад
There's no reason an AI couldn't theoretically make those same creative decisions. To think otherwise proves a fundamental misunderstanding of AI. We can pass down the knowledge from teacher to student. So an AI could do the same if it gets access to those same learning resources.
@henningKO
@henningKO 6 месяцев назад
Sure, I suppose. Once the AI is truly just a human brain in silicon.
@himan12345678
@himan12345678 6 месяцев назад
@@henningKO no. That would be terribly inefficient. The human brain has so much superfluous connections for something as simple as being a creative artist/producer/director. Honestly you wouldn't really even need a neutral net for that. We've written books on how to make art for centuries now. Technically just a state machine built to follow those guidelines would be sufficient. You do need NNs in such a system tho because for plenty of those tasks because they're more efficient at them than a state machine would be.

@matta728
@matta728 6 месяцев назад
They did try to evolve the show as it developed through four seasons and for the time, it worked. The latter half of the full show would still hold up today. If you stuck with it to the end of the third season (and to its full 'completion' with the two S4 movies) you'd see they took it from corny experimental cliche/trope filled kids show to something poignant with big ideas and long reaching character arcs. Yep, I was a fan.

Which he's both right and wrong about. There's no actual reason a future AI couldn't make such decisions and have that creative discernment. But at the same time, something like that I feel like is so above and beyond a "good enough" production AI that it might not be really considered worth the effort to give such an AI that ability. Tho ofc for Hollywood production, the money is there enough that it likely will be worth it. But in plenty of other aspects when running up against diminishing returns in AI most likely won't put in the effort for what they will see as "polish".

The "CHARGE " Blender short would be awesome for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second Chronicles of Narnia movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! Here's one I'd like to put out there. Bluey, it's arguably one of the best kids cartoons out there and very good storytelling. One that would be especially great to check out would be Season 2 Episode 26 (Sleepytime). The story in it is top tier, but bundled in it is music composition that's out of this world, and the good old animation that makes Bluey what it is (features planets and asteroids so I might be biased). Could be a great animators/directors react.

In terms of really bending the animation for story effect, oggy and the cockroaches is really good at that. A room can turn from small to massive in a moment, or going up the stairs can be a regular short trip, but going down will be like a massive rollercoaster ride with loops and such. It's used a lot for comedy and to portray a characters state of mind.

80's KID SUGGESTION - [ GEN-X KIDS UPVOTE THIS!!! ] Review Hanna Barbara late 70's/80's VERY low quality but very cheap production (re-using cells and animations from Johnny Quest, Thundarr the Barbarian, etc), moving forward in time to Transformers / GI JOE and the slightly better quality, transitioning to comparing the Transformers TV show and the higher quality action shots in the Transformer's 80's cartoon movie. Finally, there's a crazy change in animation quality and camera angles when Macross (Robotech) and Thundercats hit the screen (and compare how Thundercats and Silverhawks basically pulled a Hanna Barbara by having Silverhawks have similar or copied animations, similar characters, but Silverhawks are cyborg hawk-themed space cops?? Also, the music from this era kicked ass, so hopefully note that too. Thundarr the Barbarian music is sick as hell, while not dismissing Thundercats or Robotech/Macross! Thundercats and Silverhawks were so disturbing that they had psychological advisors. Which, Inhumanoids SHOULD have had, and Inhumanoids had bizarre art direction and crap animation.

1:22 I'd kinda contribute that "looseness" to something like ed, edd, and eddy. That show had a "notebook sketch" style where's even still characters in the show would still be constantly changing like pages in a flipbook. Very nice, and unique style

For the next episode of Animators React, you should consider reacting to the animation in (Curious George 2006) movie, because the animation in that film looks very impressive for the year.

Primal is beyond art. It’s honestly magic because it depicts a time none of us truly remember no matter how many history books we read. That series brings in a world that’s long forgotten.

It doesn't really depict a "time" since it is anachronistic. It's mostly about how it feels to be just another creature in a hostile ecosystem

I would love to see the crew cover the animation of the cartoon segment of the Star Wars Holiday Special. It definitely has some cool moments like the ships flying into the gooey alien pink ocean, but something (or a lot) about the way the main characters are designed and animated has an almost disturbing and eerie element that makes it hard to look away. Also it’s about that time of year!

Hey Corridor Crew! 👋🏻 I spent a lot of my teenage years playing 3D Movie Maker and The Movies PC games, which spearheaded my interest in filmmaking. There are a few websites that still host a huge library of these “short films” and they could possibly lead to some fun videos for the channel! At the very least, it’s a decent way to spend a lunch break at the desk haha Keep up the great work you guys!

ROLY POLY OLIE!!! That show somehow stuck with me as a kid, and when I eventually learned what 3D animation was as a teen something clicked in my head of "ooooh, those were blinns, and spheres, and cubes. They had a basic rig that conencted them all..." mind blown, then I started my (short-lived) journey into 3d animation.

World of Warcraft just released the cinematic trailer for their next expansion (The War Within) and after seeing a tweet from a Senior Animation Editor at Blizzard (Michael Bancroft) saying that the trailer had no motion capture at all, I would love to see it being featured in the next Animators React. It looks absolutely amazing!

The BBC's "Hey Duggee" is my recommendation for a kids animation you should look at, it's aimed at under 5s and has an incredibly minimal style but it's just so beautifully executed. It's also great for hiding things that will make parents (or in my case grandparents) laugh - see how many film references you can spot in the episode called "The Cheese Badge".

Suggestions for future episodes: Robot Carnival has some absolutely fantastic animation featuring short stories from different animators. Manie Manie has a very beautifully animated segment by Katsuhiro Otomo (AKIRA) and another, equally good segment by the great Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Vampire Hunter D: BLoodlust). Redline might be the last truly great hand-drawn animated film out of Japan. Mazinger Z Infinity has computer-assisted action scenes done in the 2-D/cell-animated style and would likely blow your minds.

I love the 3D animation that feels motion-capturey (realistic). I have an appreciation for the performance acting in most 3D cartoons as well, the arcs and the shapes and the beats etc, but it can also be dangerous when it comes to nuance or unique movement across characters. It's definitely great to be super intentional, but if you look at a lot of animation across films, all the characters act more or less the same. There's always that "awkward glance away and back again," clumsy/bashful smile, etc. A lot of emotions are hit very similarly at a surface level feel. Not all characters are the same, not all characters have to always be moving. Throw in some "somewhat still" performances sometimes. I get that we want to take advantage of the medium, but we don't have to use every color in the crayon box for every illustration.n art form
