Also, let's not forget that Atragon also ties into the Godzilla series. The ATragon is known as the Gotengo in Japan, and it also appeared in Godzilla Final Wars and Godzilla Unleashed.
ADV was pretty much all I watched when I started getting deep into anime around the year 2000. Compared to what else was available to me at the time, ADV always had the best dubs. Truth be told, I still think they did some excellent work, and frankly I don't take issue with them re-using the same small pool of actors. I just don't get all the hate for them, they provided a ton of material for budding anime fans and, let's face it, our subculture owes them a lot. I especially don't get the hate for Tiffany Grant. She's a great actress who voiced one of the most iconic anime characters in history. Ditto for Amanda Win Lee and Spike Spencer (Who, by the way, has a hell of a gift for being able to pull off a little boy voice at his age). And don't start on the "Evangelion was bad" BS, because everyone loved it back then and a bad series wouldn't spawn a positive legacy that lasts to this day.
"I will attempt to help Humanity........by helping one of the countries that make up the Axis forces, who committed horribly war crimes in this war (Except against the Jews for some reason............yes seriously, the Japanese even protected the Jews from the Germans, refusing to hand them over. Given who they were allied with, reading about that was pretty jarring.)." "And i will prove how horrible humanity is by Allying using the country who only entered the war when one of the Axis forces attacked them." wot?
Actually the reason was that the Japanese actually believed Hitler's take that the Jews secretly controlled the world, but pursued the exact opposite response, trying to court them and win them over. So, saving the Jews they could made sense from that particular conspiracist's perspective.
Name changes aside. Atragon is now a ship class. The first (Atragon) is the proven prototype, the second (Ra) is a heavier class hence the super, the third (Gotengo) is the modernized recent version. Its like space battleship Yamato, it has four based on the first, which makes the Yamato a ship class. Even the real Yamato is just as much a ship class as it is the ship itself.
14:46 Something about this scene reminds me of Evangel- oh, Sage made the reference for me. And speaking of Evangelion, doesn't the commander look like a gruffer Gendo Ikari? And doesn't our protagonist look like an older Shinji Ikari? ...and apparently he also has daddy issues. This was released in 1995? The same year as EVA? Wow. This HAS to be a coincidence.
aceotaku Now that I think about it, I realize that Sage was probably trying to avoid the "low hanging fruit". That, and he probably wrote too many Eva references already.
Also fun to note, both Super Atragon and Atragon where both brought to us by our lovely people back in Toho Co LTD. You may have heard of them before because they where the ones who birthed the all mighty Godzilla.
Always thought the liberty was Iowa # 6. After checking out the ships of WW 2, she's a sister ship to the British Nelson and Rodney Battleships. Still it's an older anime title and i like it.
I had no idea this was ever released on DVD. I never actively searched anywhere to buy the disc, but when I bought the VHS for some pocket change back in 2010 I decided to look up the title on ANN's Anime Encyclopedia. I vividly remember seeing no listing of a DVD anywhere on Super Atragon's encyclopedia page at the time, though that seems to have been corrected since then.
Holy Shit! When I was a kid I used to watch Venus Wars and this late night on Much Music (I think) I've been trying to remember what this was called for years so I could re-watch it. Thanks to Sage I've re-watched both... and they sucked the farts out of a dogs ass. Thanks Sage.
In a Manga UK podcast they said that Japanese licenses used to tell them that a show or film that had bombed, was really popular in order to get some return on it. Or in some cases bolt a successful title onto a failed one as Sage said. Though I have also heard they used to deliberately pick shows that had bombed, because the license was cheaper.
Really one of the most original, well scripted channels on RU-vid. The content pretty much doesn't age. Great work i could watch you all day. Still as a fat guy you where cooler just kidding not really
I just watched Atragon and found this looking for RU-vid videos on it. I repeatedly thought watching the movie that it could benefit from an Anime remake, but that would be getting a full season, hopefully two cores, not an OVA that has even less run-time then the original film. Not that it matters since this plot doesn't resemble that film much at all.
If you're going to review Barefoot Gen, then I know that you're doing research on Keiji Nakazawa's life and work. That said, please try to read Ore Wa Mita. It's a one issue telling of the Nakazawa's actual experience surviving the bomb that later evolved into Gen. It puts perspective on the changes made to the source material in reference to Nakazawa's biography. I can't wait to see how you compare it to Grave of the Fireflies.
Ships designed to travel within the arctic and Antarctic circles have stronger hulls in comparison to the navy warships of the time. Some are even made of titanium.
The original live action film did seem to do one thing better than the anime based on that trailer. It actually showed the underground civilization rather than just two members of it.
13:29 First time to see that someone brings up the myth of "The Bell" (Die Glocke), one of the wonder weapons from Nazi Germany... interessting. And yeah, i see the Evangelion reference too
Just curious, did you REALLY just pick something random off the shelf, or was that scripted? I don't mind either way, I'm just curious. Oh, also, Shamanic Princess. I want you to review Shamanic Princess.
I am waiting the sages reviews Geo Armor Kishin Corps. My opinion? It's military-mecha porn. But maybe I am a simpleton who enjoys watching shit without knowing it. I am saying that because I enjoyed watching Super Atragon, but since Sage ripped it a new one, I am now confused about my taste in anime. :s
karbengo It's okay, everyone likes different things and in general it's almost easiest to enjoy these kinds of movies, because they are easy to grasp, I kind of have the same taste as you since half of the movies on my Netflix list are under 3 stars. xD
I’m sorry but when it comes to the name I have to disagree with you. The target fans are clearly fans of the 1963 film, specifically those in America. Now you might go “Wait this movie has fans?!” Well yes… Godzilla fans. The Goten-go (the ship in Atragon) is a warship that frequently is put in Godzilla media it has been in countless video games, a few TV shows, and would later be in Godzilla: Final Wars. Also the Goten-go had a short name change to the Goten and was put in the 1977, WAR IN SPACE. The Goten-go has a mini film series going on here. Also in the original book Undersea Warship the Goten-go is called the Lightning bolt. So with the name changing from Lightning Bolt to Goten-go to Goten and with the 1963 English name being Atragon the new name being “Ra” isn’t much of a surprise due to its constant name changes. Also by this time the name “Atragon” became more of a name to refer to the story rather than the film.
You'd think someone like me would know better than to have been trying to take a drink watching this without taking a moment to hit pause. 21:10. My screen needs a wipe.
Praise the sunglasses who gave me the ability to see bennet's room in the middle of the review, also was he wearing white trousers or those where his review's notes on his legs?
This whole anime is just so...bizarre...Not in the typical way I'm used to seeing on this show. It's just executed so...the random combustion guy...And the Commander is my dealer...I don't know...
i've seen the Toho film Atragon and I can guarantee that it is a hundred times better than Super Atragon. Anyone who is a fan of Japanese scifi movies should check it out.
4:25 and we already having a conversation haha. That was like a DR who episode. (Oh man that joke was kinda far) "i make it here or there" ...pause... (ok thats hillarious) "thats what i thought"
