As a state alchemist, Ed not only gets paid, he has a government acount specifically for funding any research. Considering his research typically just costs him a train ticket, kid is rich

It not explained in the anime, but doing the taboo is not only against alchemy law, but also government law as well. So if others find out they could be arrested, so they keep quiet. Since alchemy is hard to learn, but the military want as many talented scientists/alchemists as they get and to retain the most talented so the high amount of money. Also in the manga Ed’s notes are coded as a travel log, Mustang notes are listed as women’s names (his dates).

I'm still playing catchup on FMA Brotherhood reactions, but u just wanted to say that I love how you are reacting to both FMA: Brotherhood and ATLA at the same time. These two shows, in particular, have a reputation for being as close to perfect as any show can get. Enjoy both journeys.
