I know I’ve said this before on here but it bears repeating. Her 1986 Rapture album is one of the best albums ever made. Not one bad song on the whole album. It’s the kind of album that you just put it on and press play. You don’t have to fast forward or skip a song. It’s a masterpiece sung by the great Anita Baker.
I appreciate her, and always have - especially since we have a career in common - and I do not mean singing! ("Rapture" - which this was originally from- was one of my travel cassettes.)
I’m a Chinese guy who was born and raised in Shanghai( a city of China currently lol), I first heard her song in a Uber ride while I was traveling in Chicago back in Sep 2016, and that song was Been so long and then it came sweet love, when I searched her album on Chinese music platforms, guess what? I was able to find all of her albums even including her live tour back in 1987! There are so many of her fans there, and it is a country she might be never visited, but we love her music so much just as everyone else here does!
From Hong Kong and found the “city of China currently” interesting. Anyways, been an Anita fan since 2017, her voice and her music are just impeccable. “Lately” is my favorite. Good to know there are some Chinese guys into Anita✌🏼
If you're reading this, please pray for my friend Annie. She is a homeless, recovering addict. She has been through every type of pain you could imagine a person could go through. She has experienced loss, abuse, suicide attempts... And yet with Jesus, she has such a loving, strong heart. I have never met a woman like her. Please pray God will bring miracles into her life, and turn her situation around. I ask in Jesus name, Amen.
What a good friend you are. The world is a better place because of people like you. God Richly Bless You. Hope Annie is doing well and in a better shape today. Sending love and prayers from Ghana❤
Perfect pitch control. Graceful looks. Soulful performance. Amazing band. In a nut shell, Anita Baker is super freaking amazing. One of a kind. A legend.
I'm French and for me Anita is such a fantastic and unique vocalist ! But like so many great voices : Carmel Mc Court , Toni Braxton , Bettye LaVette , she's less in the spotlight ...As we know ,the ladies that are permanently in the spotlights are the ones who dance half naked on stage , acting like sex objects and who have a tendency to say bitch every two words ...Even Madge can't stop saying bitch and cannot stop the porn cheap attitude !! So, classy acts such as Toni Braxton , Bettye LaVette or Anita Baker are less talked about than the over marketed Minaj & co ....
True in a way if you are referring to masses with no brains. I heard that Christina Auguilera popstar try to sing Etta James and she was a total flop trying to emulate her, but that video had over 7 million views with only a few comments that spoke the truth
When you don't have stage props, back up dancers, insane outfits, stand in one spot the entire concert and captivate the audience...THAT'S when you know you can SANG!!!!!...
They are the Perri sisters. They sang background for Ms. Baker for years. They also had an album in 1990 with the song "Someone Like You." It didn't go far but it was a solid single.
I cannot find a single fault in this performance. Sung truly from the heart. Anita Baker is a legend, it's people like her that make me fall in love with soul music.
D3IM2NTEII Absolutely agree, well said! I start each morning, with coffee and a play of this! Legend, as you say, and I have recently fallen in love, and this hits the button.... which is what 'soul' is all about.
I love her voice--it's perfect to me. Her range is great as she can go low and husky and all the way up there..talk about runs. It came out in 1986 on her album Rapture. I bought it. I love how she puts her whole body into this. She's a natural. Every wannabe who thinks high notes are so impressive should study this to see why going low is impressive. Then she adds those little growls. Her vocal control is outstanding. She's 28 years old here.
I’m a Hong Kong 🇭🇰 born Chinese boy , I waked infront of the stage for her Toronto gig and gave my tie to Anita and said I love you Anita at least 3 times and ask her to sing Been So Long acapella 🫶 that was 1989
I was a young professional in my first job in L.A. in the 80's and in walks Anita Baker - nobody knew who she was except me! I had been listening to a radio station, all R&B and knew all her songs from Rapture. I grew up with this genre of music and I knew she was headed for stardom. She was at our building to get some outfits for her upcoming concerts. She had no idea how great she was. It was literally months before her record hit the charts. I got to escort her around a little. She said, "you know my music??". I said I cant believe I am meeting you- they play all your songs on such and such radio station. I knew she was going to be a star. Such a great memory.
Brings me back to being a child in the 80's. My Mom listening to this with a cigarette and cleaning the kitchen. My Mom passed great taste in music to me!!❤️❤️🙏🏻
That is what you call a singer. Harmony, power, stage presence. No skinny dress or dancers everywhere. She makes it look so easy and fun. I miss her songs, her voice. Love u Anita.
I grew up listening to Hendrix, Clapton, Doors, etc. But the first time I heard Anita Baker, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. What a voice !! "Sweet Love" made me shed a tear too. Thank you, Anita !!!!!!
This lady an amazing singer, I felt like I was in a ride, going up and down , then taking a curve here and there, as she was going thru the notes, I don't n know how to explain it , she's incredible, soulful, and a electrifying performance.
I was at that concert on an incredible date with my son Bruce. I kissed him goodnight when he took me home. Some ladies from work saw us, said isn’t he a little young for you? 😍. He had his arm around me. I wore her albums out!! He is gone but the sweet memory of his sweet love lives on
Look at this amazing raw talent in vocal performance, she's not juggling, stripping, or going for the shock factor, she is simply singing what she knows. I'm 30 and heard her albums back to back as a kid, I kind of feel like that's why my expectations for Rhythm blues and soul are so high these days. I miss this.
Thank u so for mentioning her dance. It is quite clearly a reflection of her soul it is sensuous, sassy, jazzy and contemporary and classical, it light and airy and there's a morning star shinning in there!
I see where Toni Braxton got here style from. ANITA BAKER ruled the mid 80s and beyond. Hands down my favorite female singer. Her lyrics and singing style is like no other
+Debonair 1 Toni Braxton's song "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" was originally written for Anita Baker and Toni sang the demo vocals to emulate Anita's as closely as possible. Anita was pregnant at the time and couldn't record it, so she told Babyface to Toni record the song instead
I remember hearing her songs in the 80’s as a little girl . Her music video , and my grandma playing her songs . And I was so in love with her music even as a child . Still listening to her till this day ❤️❤️
Mom mom loved her music she would play this and start dancing to it when I was a kid ... Whenever I listen to this song it beings back memories of my mother .... RIP terry Blanco.
I am so happy that am not the only one that thinks she's amazing. This performance takes my breath away even after so many years. She's just in a class of her own!
Many years ago I was a big fan of Sarah Vaughn. When she passed, I thought there would never be another singer like her....then along came Anita Baker. There will never be another singer like her.....
Legend. The way her growls and crescendos and swells blend into each other is so unique to her that you can't mistake that voice for anyone else's. It's like a hearing a master horn player completely in their element.
Introduced this song/album to my then boyfriend, high school sweetheart, and now husband. Thirty-three years later, he still says that I mesmerized him with the music 😂❤
When I was a child I would play the radio and I would sing to this song in my living room, I lived in the projects; I would sing so loud! I still listen and sing! I am a man but love to imitate her sultry low voice! Anita Baker has such a beautiful voice! ❤💜🤍
YOU see something beautiful happening on stage, SHE performs like she's in some other, magical world, and I just can't stop the tears and musical frissons from taking a hold on me. Utterly magnificent!

As far as I'm concerned, there's never been a more electrifying and sexier singer than my girl, Anita Baker, and she's always fully clothed. Good God Almighty!
I listened to this amazing Anita Baker way back when she sang this song. Now here in 2024 she is still such a fabulous singer and 1) no racy outfit 2) no 10 backup dancers 3) no screen or big light show. JUST a beautiful lady with a SENSATIONAL and lovely voice
Film & Video have given us a window into the highest aspirations of the human spirit which these recordings of Anita's songs give us goosebumps, makes us tingle and our hair stand on end, transport us into heavenly realms.
James Ingram, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Brian McKnight, Michael McDonald....the list goes on and on....I miss those day so much...where did music go man. Now I'm reduced to reminiscing on my computer longing for those days again
