I was in the house for this production and thought at the time how moving this duet was. Their two voices are most beautifully matched and their acting complements the singing. I've just been looking at the clip of the recent Don Carlos in Paris and didn't find anything like the same emotion bewteen Kaufmann and Yoncheva. Neither production was particularly to my taste visually but shut your eyes and just listen to these voices. Perfection !

Good god, that's passionate.

Harteros is fine. Kaufmann is one of the miracles of the world since recordings have been available. Just criticism should be about what we have, not what we do not have. SO that we do not have a certain kind of tenor voice, a certain kind of voice production, a certain kind of physical ugliness, a certain dramatic ineptitude is one thing. What we do have is a glorious sound however we define the voice, a production that enables the music to be sensitively, musically, dramatically and beautifully sung, the ability to inhabit a role so very different from the usual romantic tenor and a physical presence that is a bonus - even if he looked like Pavarotti or Vargas he would still be a great singer. But for the dramatic purposes which ARE part of opera we are glad to have what we have.
