Jonas Kaufmann (Calaf) and Asmik Grigorian (Turandot) perform in Claus Guth's production of Turandot at the Wiener Staatsoper, conducted by Marco Armiliato. December 2023 Filmed by ORF
I saw Asmik Grigorian sing the role in Palermo where they set the opera in the space age.....it was truly hideous staging except for her magnificent performance. This set is equally grotesque in a different way. I hate these modern avant-garde directors ruining the beauty by their art gallery staging. I want to see epic sets as well as hear the singers. Such a tragedy.
I do not agree. Jonas is still one of the best. He has some better days. Nothing to do with his age...he has health problems and had to cancel many concerts...
Thank you for this opinion! Totally agree! The is one of the most fantastic timbres ever and tecnically very equipped but you need to catch him in his healthy days
Thank you very much for sharing. I saw this twice at our beloved Staatsoper. She knocked it out of the park, if you like her. Yes, the staging and his form, but I really enjoyed it. And nice to see here. Thank you again.
Haha, he could do with some forward placement, mask vibrations, whatever to brighten his voice and produce squillo. It seems to me his technique would be damaging and unsustainable. Muscular and confined to the mechanism plus some manufactured chest resonance. I have to commend him. Singing that way would quickly make hamburger out of most tenors.
yes - however there are small omissions- At the end Turandot and Calaf should sing "Ertenita". There is a complete version here on YT: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q09_thEg6AA.htmlsi=tii9gjlD_uPNyGQ8
More dramatic, less operatic. I don't know whether I am excited at it or I am enjoying it, though I am satisfied. This stage may be something similar to the New Bayreuth of 1950s.
Being a progressive thinking individual, I find this to be an interesting re-interpretation of the famous opera. But, sorry, but I think I will stick to the more traditional versions of Turandot. P.S.: I am a great Jonas Kaufmann fan.
This is pretty wonderful. Asmik's acting is absolutely Oscar worthy (as usual). Kaufmann is also quite good though of course I imagine this with Asmik and Franco Corelli...................
Both are very good. But they should not be dinging this opera.. it tears the throat out. Callas sang this role often in the beginning and she did not like it and hoped that it would not ruin her voice . That's a big red stop sign . As a matter of fact tell me one Puccini opera ( and God knows I love him) that is good for your voice .
Great singing and acting. I do hope that the odd stage design made more sense when seen in total. I found it quite distracting coming in at the end. But, what voices!
I was amazing. The sets and costumes gave the sense of an oppressive regime, created by Turandot who was then trapped in it. Kaufmann's not the greatest actor, but I adore him. Grigorian was spectacular. And the score, just when you think it's getting a bit cacophonous you find tears pricking your eyes.
Kaufmann is a great singer in german repertoire but in italian operas is voice doesn't match similar results. Grigorian is not Turandot (Caballé too has sung Turandot and my comment at that time was the same) but is one of the few great singers . Let's hope she doesn't destroy her voice with wrong repertoire. Grigorian, in any case, much better than Kaufmann .
What a hideous production. I love that Asmik is doing Butterfly but I think Turandot is not the right choice for her yet. She needs to protect her incredible gift. She is already adding heavier roles too soon IMHO. She is a great artist!!
Funny you mention that… Puccini was slightly influenced by the second Vienense school, which Berg was part of. You can hear this influence during the first act of the opera with the use of atonality during the scene where all the spirits of the dead princes are trying to warn Calaf. Moreover, Turandot was premiered in 1924, around the same time as Wozzeck. With that being said, this is an edited version of the original Alfano ending (because Puccini died before finishing the score as I am sure you know) which is very theatrical compared to later Toscanini approved version.
@@masonevans779 I suppose when you are dead no one can stop some other hack from finishing your work. It just sounds weird and doesn't follow Puccini's music. You go from Nessun Dorma to this? Come on.
Terrible production, how could they modernize a beautiful opera like this,if it is not Jonas singing,it would be a flop, even Jonas looks like he is bewildered and asmik can sing but her acting is so so.I was thinking going to see it in June but coming from Canada would not be worth it.sorry I was waiting for Jonas as calaf but this production doesn’t suit him at all. 13:18
Pressed and strangled voice. Just a constant squeeze. If Jonas Kaufmann had made his debut in Turandot earlier, he would have been a wonderful Calaf. Now he is too old for this role because his voice no longer has the clarity and brilliance it once did. What a pity !
Awful production and singers far from their fach. Pity Asmin has decided to sing Turandot. Not for her. Jonas is throaty, with that voce ingolata. Not good, sorry to say that. I love both singers, though.
Here we go with the stupid sets and idiotic costumes. Poor Puccini. Total lack of respect. Apparently designing awful "modern" sets guarantees success. Shame on Vienna
Terrible production and bad singers , Kaufmann and Grigorian are overestimated singes in these roles.Marton , Carreras and Riciarelli with Maazel were lovely to hear and see.Corelli and Nilsson , superstars between 1959 to 1973 are still best of singers in Turandot. This is Scheisse as they say i german.Who pays a lot of money for this ?
Marton burned her voice out with this role. She did not have a good high C after this opera . So don't offer her up as a better singer than this singer in this video.
It absolutely SUCKS that Asmik and Jonas didn’t sing the descant at the end for the broadcast. I saw them live on 22 December where they DID sing it (as verified by house recording), and I nearly fell out of my seat because it was so thrilling. Was monumentally bummed to watch the broadcast only for them to stop singing completely after her “Il suo nome è amore.” At least audio exists I guess. Jonas was in much better voice on 22 December than on 16 December when this was broadcast, apparently. Asmik is a triumph in this role. Her acting is incomparable to any Turandot I’ve ever seen. Glad there’s a video (even if it’s not perfect).
