Vogue magazine is about to hit a big anniversary. A new book captures the fashion's Bible's most famous covers, and a digital archive will bring 120 years of publishing history to your computer screens. Serena Altschul gets a sneak peek.
The US Vogue needs to balance between the celebrities and high fashion models covers. One of the reasons for today's models not as influencial as they used to be
being on the cover of vogue USED to mean something. It's time for Anna to pass the torch on to someone who is not so celebrity obsessed. Her team are too obsessed with trying to follow trends instead of making trends.
+BARTHOLOMEW ARMBRÜSTER BRAVO, i'm so waiting for her tenure at Vouge to be done, i used to LOVE VOGUE, i miss grace mirabella, she did gr8 things for vogue during her stay. I am pro Elle & Bazzar & anti-vogue because of this witch.
To be in Vogue USED to mean something, dear Anna. Up until the moment when you put Kim Kardashian on the cover. That was when Vogue stopped being a Fashion Bible, a Role Model, an Inspiration and became a regular cheap publication, synonymous with no respect for real, hard-working genuine talent.
I actually don't like that Vogue started putting actors/singers on the cover. I believe that was when the industry started to shift again. In the 40's even through the early 60's, if you didn't have "the look" or "undeniable beauty" you were completely nexted. The late 60's and 70's brought a breakthrough. A great shift where looking relatable and being relatable was much more revered. It was an empowering time for the arts and the films and music of that time are just better in my opinion. It was about substance over superficiality. Then came 1989 and Madonna on the cover and it changed the game. We regressed back to the 50's and made artists/actors/singers have to look like models. Now with technology and photoshop aps, it's bled down to the masses and we have become a superficial society just wasting away at the idea of having another follower or getting another like. It was ground breaking, but for all the wrong reasons.
Did she put Elon Musk's mother in her mag ? she is around 70 and used to be a runway model. A famous woman, being the mother of a famous fraud. Right up her alley !
I hate to say it, but those who criticize fashion need to check themselves. When you go to a store to purchase a shirt or pants you not only look for something that fits but also something that looks nice. That is fashion. Fashion is part of our everyday life. It's art in every sence of the word. Do you know how fashion works? Big designers like Galliano or Lagerfeld have runway shows. Then smaller brands copy them, then smaller brands copy them and so on until you get what you buy at Wal-Mart. So that funky outfit you have on with your unshaven armpits and hair legs was a decendant of the outfit in Anna Wintours office.
You’re glorifying something that is a lot more basic. Fashion isn’t going to revolutionize the world, it’s not going to do anything of any significant value. It’s pure aesthetic consumerism. People only care about so much because they are obsessed. It can be fun, but it’s not like it’s really doing much other than covering your back in a more stylish way.
Vogue has long lost its influence on the average woman. It's more like a parody of itself at this stage. I actually don't know any average, middle or certainly not working class woman who would buy it, it's just for the elite to circle-jerk over their amazingness, lol.
germankiwigal Average can't afford what is advertised in Vogue. Vogue is a catalog of advertised products with fashion in between to propel the pages. The purpose of the magazine is to make money for S.I. Newhouse. It is not some moral height to be achieved. The target audience can and does buy what companies pay millions to advertise to subscribers. Then there are the people who aspire to own what is shown in Vogue. They buy the magazine and that helps finance the printing. If I, a 67 year old man were found to help sell a purse or a scarf, or more profitably, a perfume, Vogue would put me on the cover. That's how it is.
Very true. I was flipping through it and yawned. Nothing in there is exciting or new or interesting. And I do enjoy runaway fashion so I don't even think the problem is that it doesn't appeal to the tastes of "regular" women, just that it's incredibly backwards and boring
Vogue was never intended for the average audience. It is intended for the imaginative souls in the vast crowd of mediocrity who ASPIRE for the higher IDEAL of DIVINE BEAUTY that the VOGUE illusionary costume of elegance allows as an attainable END in itself.
@@ladylaurenia VOGUE is about ART. Colors and shapes and textures and the senses overwhelmed with NEWNESS and amore sensient awareness of vitality itself. VOGUE is about OPENNING the SELF to a SUPERNOVA celestial display of BRIGHT NEON STARS blinding us dreary humans to our mundane, boring ,despair known ashuman existence.
Anna Wintour is a genius. I love what she has done for the magazine over the years. I have been a subscriber for years and I have never been disappointed. Anna always knows what is going to work best for the magazine.
I admire Anna for what she is, her way of dealing with things and showing the world fashion is not that superficial steriotype people have in mind. But I think it's time to bring a different concept to Vogue, like inclusion of not thin-to-the-bone girls on the cover. With the influence and power of that magazine, would help A LOT womens to accept their bodies. (Sorry, english is not my first language!)
The fact that you're all speaking about the Kim k edition on all of these vogue videos I've been clicking on is the very reason she was on it. She's the talk of the time whether you love it or hate it
I'm tired of this fantasy that every Kardashian fan has : they all think everybody hates Kim because we're all allegedly jealous. But the fact is we simply don't care. It was heartbreaking to see her on the cover of Vogue. Just sad.
it made the magazine look cheap ! a woman who cannot act, sing or play an instrument , made a sex tape and her mother promoted it. It's all it took. I hear, they also belong to one of the famous Hollywood satanic groups, so I expect, that is her real connection to the famous people. Most of Hollywood is decadent, deviant, hypocritical and many are actually , criminal. Adrenochrome is their new " drug " of choice. Look it up. Of course, I need to say ALLEGED ! as I did not see them do it . We still have freedom of speech and freedom of the press and we need to use it !
@@linanicolia1994 Actually, her insecure crowd of followers make her popular by buying into her act.A real life Barbie like doll to emulate because her followers don't have interesting lives of their own to live. They feed her weak ego making her feel superimportant.Deflated she is nothing if not an empty bag of wind.
It doesn't stop with her. Her dad was OJs best pal. And KrisJenners EX was SO jealous of herhis six feminine daughters that Caitlyn Bruceproduced a seventh female by herhimself for herhimself to be. A gold medal encore. Indeed.
@@linanicolia1994 Anna Wintour is an All Class Act.Vogue reflects her refined taste .She sees the real thing through her shades. She is thin, driven, eloquent, quiet spoken with a firm unwavering mental toughness. Also,an iconoclast, not daunted by being riskily experimental.A dropout at 16 to be running forward at Vogue for 32years as a soon to be septuagenarian.A beacon for women worldwide.A ROLE MODEL for human empowerment.
@@linanicolia1994 Lina Nicolia reflects my thinkingfeeling , also.Things MATTER to you, also.I sense your disappointment and disgust with Vogue because you genuinely believe in it and love and appreciate it as your own.You personally feel let down as I do. Perhaps you are Irish or Italian as I am. Hollywood is a BLACKHoLE when the artificial lights Go out.It does not glow in the dark.Eventually even the shadows disappear from view and leave it's captivated inhabitants feeling empty, lonely, lost, and homeless as they really are in the still of the night vainly desperately searching for THE WAY out of their darkened Burned out souls.
I love watching interviews of her, dislike her or not she's really a excellent role model to have, especially for women. She's definitely one of my top role models. She knows what she wants and makes no apologies for that. She's courageous enough to take risks and follow her instincts. That's the definition of strong person right there. Women take note: you're not going to get ahead by pandering to everyone's opinion and being too meek to make bold moves.
I will buy Vogue the day they start to put engineers, doctors and not famous but successful people, short people, curvy people, real people who are really contributing but no ones know can be fashion too.
I once picked up an issue and looked through it because I was shocked by how thick the magazine was. Ads, ads, ads. I sat down and didn't read anything. I counted each page that had an ad. If it was half a page, then two of them counted as a single page. End result: 75% of the magazine is advertising, 10% is columns and letters and the rest is where the actual stories are. It's trying too much to push a celebrity-based story these days and seems to have moved slightly AWAY from fashion.
i really want to be a graphic designer working for the magazine editorial of vogue i love beimg surrounded by fashion imfluemce and people who love to work and enjoy what they do. one can only dream.
LOL. Ridiculous. Then she goed and puts the same three Faces on Vogue on repeat meaning gigi bella and kendall. Its all about followers these days which in turn means nothing and cheapens a magazine that used to be prestigous.
I really don't like Vogue. I subscribed to it for a year and really regretted it. You can rarely find any ready-to-wear clothes in vogue. The entire magazine is like a fashion show in a gala or something, nothing an average person can really wear in real life. I would recommend Glamour or Lucky instead, those two magazines are more practical for people who wants to wear something fashionable on a daily-basis.
Vogue or any fashion magazine is not about telling you what to wear. You can do that yourself if you are of average or even below and above average intelligence. It is about inspiration, escape, and understanding that fashion, clothing, accessories, beauty, skin care can be so much more than just a piece of product on a shelf. If you need daily inspiration, you can check out ASOS or Dailylook without paying a cent!
Christine L EVERY fashion magazine is about "inspiration, escape and understanding that fashion, clothing, accessories, beauty, skin care can be so much more than just a piece of product on a shelf." You would be a really snobbish person if you were trying to say otherwise. Vogue's fashion is obviously more tailored to shows, not for ready-to-wear (yes, there ARE such things as ready-to-wear fashion as well in the market, or are you living under a rock?). I actually have many very high intelligent friends who have no clue how to dress fashionably, sometimes not even properly. Because fashion is not exactly in tune with most people who do high intellectual/intelligent stuff, as they spend less of their brain-cells on it (hence the stereotype of "nerds"). Other magazines, such as Glamour, are just better inspirations for me personally. I don't read a magazine to try to dress like the people in the magazines, I read magazines that I like precisely for inspiration, Vogue just gave me none. And actually I DO also JUDGE whether their fashion is good or not, and I don't always agree with what looks good, because I CAN think for myself, not just pouring my arms out to whichever magazine is the most hyped. Get over yourself.
Yes it does Vanessa. I was in the fashion industry and went to design school and modeled . Kim looks like a basic cute girl you see at the mall with hair extensions. She's no Kate moss or Linda evangelista. That is who Vogue is or should be reserved for. Leave Kim to the TMZ nonsense. She is a publicity rat.
The thing is not about beauty, but be actually relevant for fashion industry or relevant at all. I personally think Kim Kardashian hasn't the most exciting style nor any further relevance. Although Keeping Up with Kardashians may be my guilty pleasure sometimes, I recognise it's not good and remarkable.
Beauty is very subjective. Kate Moss would be considered average, even ugly in quite a few cultures and places. Beauty according to you would be based on your exposure to a certain kind of look or constant reinforcement of the idea a certain type of beauty, through mainstream media in your country or culture.
@@sunnyk3770 Au contraire.Beauty is an eternal elegance which defies aging pushing back the clockhands of time counterclockwise to an eternity of youthfulness. Oh,the BEAUTY of the HOURGLASS figure forevermore.Eternally childlike, never AGING beauty. The GREEK IDEAL. CLASSICAL BEAUTY. The Vogue Ambience is the passport to a new beginning of eternal bliss at some other place at some other time. The IDEAL DRUG of humanchoice to ESCAPE and DENY DEATH itself to the extent that Vogue FANTASY allows.
so vogue has to mean something? well it don't mean nothing when you cheapen your magazine that is supposedly known for it's high standards by putting someone on the cover who's done absolutely nothing to earn the fame she has.
I think they should've been on the cover bc they have influenced the world with their style. I agree it is in a negative way, but Vogue just made it obvious what the people want nowa days... suddenly, that is a or all the kardashians. 'We' made them famous, why complain now?
Nothing except selling her soul down the river, embarrassing herself, and losing respect for the sake of money, which I suppose is its own sacrifice. She'll never be taken seriously as a person and is famous for being a complete waste of life and a joke. She's overpaid, surely, but it doesn't sound like the greatest life to me.
It's part of our culture. What might seem like a crazy fashion trend in the magazines now could end up being "everyday plain clothes" or something that "everybody's wearing" in the future. High-waist pants and skirts used to be the norm, but now mid to low-rise ones are more popular, however, we're seeing a resurgence in high-waist outfits again in the magazines, so they may make a comeback as popular in the future.
Vogue is relevant because they make mistakes as well. It's what makes this magazine and the fashion world so fascinating imo. Just because Vogue is changing with the times, doesn't mean they will get it right always or impress everyone who are nostalgic for the times of the past. We're not going back to Magazine covers and sales. Forging a way forward will have challenges. Models do not have the same enigmatic appeal than what they used to have. And when there is a model on the cover - the model will be either too 'thin' or too 'fat' or too 'white' or too 'black' or too 'straight' or too 'gay' or too 'right' or too 'left'. One could hardly blame an editor to choose public recognition over uncertainty. The USA cannot even agree on a Jeopardy host. And how the heck will we agree on a Vogue cover? In my opinion she's done a great job to keep Vogue relevant to those who actually love fashion - and the Kardashians, love or hate them, has done a lot for fashion. Let's be real here.
i’ve always wondered why Anna wears the sunglasses. and why has no one asked this in interviews. at least i have not seen any. also the older vogue covers are so much better.
She was was asked and she did give several reasons. One reason is that she doesn't want people to see her reaction when she goes to a fashion show. The other that she is photosensitive; on bright days, she constantly wears them because it causes pain(headaches probably) having to squint the whole time.
University fashion design, fine arts and journalism departments and other major newspapers would. It's not for the everyday person at that cost it's for businesses, schools and the wealthy who need/want access to 120 years of a publication. They said that part of the archive would be available to regular readers for a much lower price. Also It's a marketing strategy that appeals to the wealthy and the others I mentioned previously.
Kate B. She HAS to ..... she gets her orders from up above ..... they want to push a narcissist reality star mentality the most ..... that’s the most meaningful to them ..... to psychologically shape us this way
I remember growing up in the 80's & 90's, Vogue Supermodels caused a lot of teen girls to become insecure, bulimic, and suicidal. I'm glad Anna Wintour brought in celebrities.
That's like asking what the point of music is. Fashion has many outlets and purposes: Practical: To clothe people according to seasons and for different occasions. Artistic: Fashion is fine art.Like painting or sculpture, fashion artists and designers communicate a message through clothing. Cultural:It is one of the mediums through which a culture is created and perpetuated.Much like culinary arts and music, its an expression of historical and cultural identity.
Unfortunately for Vogue, they need to compete against Instagram. Once, Vogue was the place to check out photographers, models, fashion, accessories, well, fashion overall, but now, people are doing it on their Instagrams, and it is free, which is the most appealing thing of it all. There is a vast pool of designers and photographers that do not land on Vogue, but do on your FYP in TikTok or Instagram.
I don't see why people have a problem with Kim Kardashian being featured on Vogue. Sure, people say she's only "famous for being famous" and how she doesn't have any talents and what not, but it's not about that! I don't know if any of you people have seen Kim on just any normal day, but I must say, she has a great sense of fashion. The whole family has a great sense of fashion. Kim K's look is actually kind of iconic this day in time. This is why they featured Kim. Chill out, people, and realize that Vogue has always been and will always be the greatest fashion magazine. Petty opinions don't phase Anna at all, and after all, it's only about fashion, not about the opinions of Vogue buyers in relation to the person on the front page.
vince they have to sell magazines! It’s a business after all. Apparently, putting celebrities on the cover is what drives sales with the general public, in a perfect world it wouldn't happen. But hey! Go figure!
" ... it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff. "
i totallyl agree with suprheroman, there are way too many celebs on covers nowadays! we need to have a counter reaction and start putting more models (and not just the famous marketing models) back on the covers!
Fashion is an industry that involves work for hundreds of thousends of people. And has done for centuries ,Anna Wintour has just helped to bring exellance into a world where vulgarity has a very strong influence which is to be deplored
It used to mean something to be on the cover of Vogue. Now it means nothing since they put someone on the cover who became famous by making a sex tape.
I use to believe that until they posted Kim Kardashian on the cover and started recycling the same people over and over on the cover. Nothing ground breaking anymore
Really.... That's so bad.... VOGUE magazine has a history..... VOGUE cover has a history...... VOGUE articles tells abt the history..... I think VOGUE is just a VOGUE.... It doesn't have to be compared to any kind of magazines which deals with same kind of materials printed on those magazines.....
what is kim is on vogue? She has transformed a lot and has style and that is the reason she has millions of followers. Somewhere she deserved it because she has earned it.
I could give a rat's *ss about fashion. What I do respect are people who are passionate about something and as a result are very good at what they do. Anna Wintour is that. What I don't respect are nitwits who have so little going on for themselves that they feel they have to dump on things about which they know little or nothing. :)
