I like how even after they get mad at Anne, Marilla is like “yeah but why did she drink so much of it? She kind of deserves it for being so greedy” Diana had no chill and drank so much.
Also, I just recently learned that “cordial” in those ye olde days was a term for a FIZZY DRINK. Diana should have cried foul after the first glass when there’s no fizziness. Imagine pouring someone an orange drink thinking it’s Fanta, except it’s either plain orange juice or an orange flavoured punch and doesn’t have fizziness at all, and no one think that’s sus.
I’m just glad at least one of them was sober. Can you imagine Anne Shirley’s temper if she poured booze on top of it? She would have gotten in a street fight with Mrs Barry if she’d had half that bottle.
The landscapes in this 80s series are so much better. The lakes, the roads full of trees and flowers, just beautiful and just like the books described.
The gasp-inducing scene in the orchard with the never-ending blossom trees that they drive their horse and cart through made everybody that saw it dream of visiting Prince Edward Island. You've reminded me too that every time I watched a period drama growing up, I'd wonder if England really was that beautiful, if the villages and houses were still like that and real rather than part of a theatrical set up. Now I live in the UK and I can tell everybody that it looks EXACTLY like that in real life and I hope everybody will come and visit England to see for themselves'. English villages and the countryside when spring arrives is magical. It never gets old, the thrill is eternal. 😍💘
@@kellyhenderson9972 Thanks for this Kelly, I know where to mark on a map now. I'd love to visit Canada, so many hidden beauty spots that don't get the exposure, so people abroad don't know about them. Sometimes it's through movies and TV shows that people get inspired to research the shooting locations and include the area when on holiday. Thanks! It's gorgeous. I'm in the UK and it's unbelievably gorgeous in some places here too, EXACTLY like a period drama. It never gets old for me.
I love Anne and Diana's friendship. It's much indeed a bosom friendship. We rarely see any of those nowadays. Those two girls' story was so precious to read and to watch.
This is the first scene I remember watching with my grandma when I was little; I didn't understand until I was much older that poor Anne and Diana had mistaken currant wine for raspberry cordial
ANNE mistook it for raspberry cordial. Diana on the other hand took one sip and knew exactly what it was. Shame on her. I sincerely hope that once Anne was cleared of any blame, Mrs Barry gave Diana a bare bottomed Darn good Spanking for her naughtiness.
my meme got these videos for all of the grandkids when we were little so we could watch something wholesome when we came to her house and my sister and I watched them every time we went to her house we loved it so much
@@emillyhale7557 she had to. Cordial can be sweet or bitter. Raspberry cordial would I imagine be sweet. The Barry's must have had it in their house as well.
When I was 5 they used cartoons in sedifet (sue-da-fet) commercials so I ate my mom's sudifet (basically Tylenol like medicine) like candy...... Was puking and in the hospital as well.
Wine? The stuff I made (for gifts) was mostly brandy. Of course, my misbehaving hearing recalled blackberry instead of raspberry, and I went by *this* particular scene in my compounding of it!
This scene is one of my favorites! Poor Diana 😂Girl if you had it before then you should have known it wasn't Raspberry Cordial. The moment she said, "It doesn't taste a bit like it". She should have known. I just love how she kept reaching for the bottle, no matter how tipsy she got.
@@CadeD679 Marilla and her lack of labels. 😉 Or maybe they came off the bottles in storage. Ann also baked a cake and mistook the liniment for vanilla flavoring. 😳 Just knowing your bottles is fine unless there are other people in the house. I need to keep that in mind myself now that my children want to cook, too. 😄
The batch I made - for gifts - was mostly brandy and blackberries. I went by *this* scene to formulate it - blackberries, brandy, and honey, I think. Let the mix steep for a month in the fridge, then filtered into bottles. The girl’s facial expression when she poured the second cup *did* it. I had to make some up, given the recipients were really fond of this series!
It’s still pretty amazing how funny this is so many years later especially since this book was written over 100 years ago, the situational humor still holds up pretty well (I’m referring to the book because this is a scene in the book and the movie does a good job of adapting it visually.)
This was the best film version of Anne of Green Gables. I watched the series with my mother when I was a kid. Such a lovely memory and a lovely thing for people to be able to do: find a series to watch with a parent/family which you all enjoy watching equally. I fear in 2022 that doesn't happen anymore as so many families don't sit down to eat dinner together and everybody is glued individually to their own screen/device of choice. Also, so many shows are violent and inappropriate as family viewing with no gentle, sweet morality exploration and social studying to mull over and discuss together. Where's the glue, the bonding in family entertainment? It can't be cringey or kids will roll their eyes and leave-- you need that genius creative balance that transcends age. Thank you for uploading this clip and reminding me of being happy with my mother, watching this charming and wholesome adaptation together. The other series which I'd recommend to all people looking for family friendly shows different generations can enjoy together due to the wonderful moral lessons, great script & classic English language and great humour are: Lark Rise to Candleford, Cranford, Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, Emma and Wives and Daughters (with the last one being great for fathers and daughters). Edit: How could I have forgotten to recommend the entire box set of The Durrells?! What an oversight. One of the greatest things I watched during the last year or two. Absolutely charming, laugh-out-loud funny. I HIGHLY recommend it as both family viewing AND just something pure, evocative, non-political and beautifully filmed to enjoy on your own during a sultry summer season. Adaptations of this quality are rare.
@@ValerieGriner Thank you, I love a great recommendation so I will definitely search for it and give it a try. Thanks Valerie, I hope your week ahead is an exceptionally lovely one. 🙏🤗
At this point Anne is Marilla's child. She was pissed at Mrs. Barry for her treatment of Anne to the point of throwing shade at Diana. I love this story
Ahh I remember waiting for this to come on when i was 8 years old. I fell in love with the victorian era and all the home decor. I watched this with my mom. Meghan Follows was the best Anne there ever was and ever will be. Its too bad that shes not producing any of the rest of Lucy Maude Montgomery's books and bringing them to life.
I remember the very 1st time I watched this scene. It was all I could do to Not die laughing. I own the series (of course) and everytime I watch this...I simply can't help but burst out laughing. And LMAO if there was one. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Three glasses. It actually doesn't make sense because wine has a strong taste (I can barely stand it) Rachel Lynde commented that she smelled like a distillery. She was downing it as if it tasted like Welch's. I'm assuming this was a script error..
@@jonathancruz5932 Since most of us have been around other adults who had a glass of beer or wine at dinner before, it’s easy for us to think it would be ridiculous to not recognize the smell of alcohol, even if we’d never drank it before. However, I’m guessing that the adults around them never drank alcohol around them, so they didn’t realize that was what it was.
I cannot imagine my life without Anne and Gil, Marilla and Mathew, Diana, Kathryn even Rachel Lynd and Josie Pie Ruby Gillis Morgan Harris ❤ Them all! "Smell the blossoms Marilla drink them in.." !!
It's not Anne's fault. Marilla left the Currant Wine in the pantry and the Raspberry Cordial in the cellar. They look so similar it's hard to distinguish between them. I always feel sorry for Anne (Not to mention laughing my head off. 😂🤣😂🤣) Diana's mother punishment toward her was harsh, bullying and snobbish. It wasn't until over a year later that Anne was able to explain/apologize for what happened. That of course came after Anne saved the life of Diana's baby sister. Diana's mother Only cared about what people thought of her/family, and her social status. The way she looked down at Anne as she peeked through the window, when Marilla left for the political rally. Anne was lonesome and Diana's mother could Care Less!! They couldn't talk to each other at school. Diana didn't even take her college entrance exams. She focused more on becoming a wife/lady of the town/homemaker. Let's Not forget that back then a woman attending college to become something Other than a nurse or teacher (Hell attending college at all for that matter) was frowned upon and disdain as being Non-Lady like.
@@karineaudet6270 i know right? 😂 sometimes you have to go back there to escape the constant daily bs of adulthood we are consistently being subjected too
The effects of alcohol vary from person to person. Some can drink a crap load and not be effected (which is rare), while others it can take one glass to get drunk.
@@andieallison6792 It might. Don't forget, Anne and Diana are both children, and children were for the most part not exposed to or allowed to consume alcohol around this time period. Also 16 Oz of wine drunk in rapid succession like Diana did it could have a very swift negatively effect on a child. Factor in that Diana had possibly not eaten anything in preparation for have tea with Anne meant her stomach might have been empty which would hasten the process of alcohol taking effect.
@@andieallison6792 Actually, I stand corrected. 3 tumblers is equal to 25 fluid ozs which is just over 3 US cups. Yeah, she was doomed. Hell, I'm an adult and I couldn't drink 25 ozs of wine, beer, champagne etc as fast as she did.
It’s not shown in this clip but afterwards when Mrs. Barry is accusing Anne of being manipulative to Marilla, I was surprised Mrs. Lynde doesn’t side with Mrs. Barry but rather blames Marilla for making currant wine. Not that that’s much better but at least she didn’t gang up with Mrs. Barry and accuse Anne.
Shout out to RU-vid’s algorithm. First time I’ve been suggested Anne of Green Gables movie scenes, and it reminds me of when I used to watch this movie with my mom. ❤️
Oh I loved this movie. And this scene in particular is so funny. 😂 What Anne didn’t realize was that Diana was drinking wine instead of Raspberry Cordial.😂😂
This is a sweet scene of Anne of Green Gables, I'll tell you that. Poor Diana, she didn't deserve to get drunk at all when Anne managed to get some tea prepared on behalf of her best friend's visit.
@@ernestshackelton6278 Wow thanks for sharing this information… I grew up watching this movie (on VHS taped from when it was on TV 😆) as a child but had no idea who the actors were… for some reason I never even considered it as it seemed so old 😂
This scene struck me as odd because alcohol has a very distinct taste and burn, idk if raspberry cordial has that same taste or what but I feel like you'd be able to tell.
Having made raspberry cordial before, I can tell you it is VERY sweet! Delicious, but very sweet! Even if it isn't wine, you don't want to drink a lot since it's pretty strong and it'll make you sick or a little loopy.
I think Diana Barry is the one to blame for being drunk and also very sick and I think Anne should not be blamed for Diana’s pigging out on alcohol when she should have had the tea that Anne was making for both of them instead of getting herself very drunk and also getting violently sick at home in the bushes and her mother being down right rude towards Anne.
@@heathereframe It's a story, and she didn't know what being drunk was. Diana's mom says sorry later, but it should have been a lot more than inviting her to their family trip.
Oh gods me and my sister used to love this when we were kids. This is was a good recommendation RU-vid and a good blast from the past in which me amd my sister would laugh our asses off at this part like the monsters we were.
I LOVE Anne of Geene Acres. Loved the books and the PBS movie did great. If you've never read the books or seen the movie do either or both. They're so good!
Fell like I’m watching the 19th century version of Pen15. Just two girls trying to act like how they think adults act, screwing up, and then freaking out.
This reminds of a time I was a bridesmaid in my late teens and my friend took my satin blue dyed heel which I had removed to replace with flats and proceeded to fill it with wine. She drank up had blue stains all around her mouth, passed out on her parent’s doorstep and they blamed myself and my friend who had carted her home.
Given the teetotaling culture of PEI at the time this was waaaaay more scandalous than just a simple misunderstanding. It would be like your kids accidentally getting into your fentanyl patches.
