Since David Duval has been doing commentary (which I really like, by the way) for the Golf Channel I have gotten quite a bit of interest in going back over his swing and my opinions as to how his game slipped so much. Here I show all the swings my friend Mark Diamond and I took during a practice round for the PGA Championship at Medinah in 1999 when David was ranked 2nd in the world. It was the best golf I have ever seen played: he never missed a shot and was 8 under through 13 holes. It wasn’t long before he won his first and only major, after which he pretty much fell off the face of the earth. I have always contended that his main problem was his hand path dropping in transition, and here I also note how he flattened his backswing plane at P3 and got his left arm deeper across his chest, leading to the dropping hands and a “stuck” approach position at P6. He recently did a bit on the Golf Channel explaining what he was working on (which I show here), but as I point out his swing is still doing the same things that got him in trouble in the first place.

Around 1996 or so, Jim Furyk and I went out to dinner in Palm Desert during The Hope. We were old buds from AJGA days. Jim was playing well and had a win or two by then and living at TPC Sawgrass and played a ton of golf w Duval. I asked him who was the best player out there. He said that Duval was thumping him during friendly games around TPC. He said he drove the sh_t out of it, right down the middle. Tough to beat that when you combine it with a great putter back in the day. Enjoyed the video. Thanks Wayne.

I saw Duval play the PGA at Medinah that year. Was playing with Greg Norman. On 5, Norman crushes a drive. Duval then gets up and busts one 40yds past Greg. Duval definetly had an extra gear

I was at the 1997 Tour Championship held at Champions Golf Club in Houston for the second round I believe. I watched Davis Love play #8 and #9 where he drained a 60 footer for birdie on #8 and hit driver and 4 iron to 10' on #9 a relatively long par 5 but I never saw a better golf shot in my life than the tee shot of David Duval on 10th hole that same day. I had played Champions several times and hit the ball at the time a long way as my swing was up around 110 mph five or so years later. From the back tee I had trouble making the corner on #10 from over swinging because it took a tee shot of 280 yards to make the corner on the dogleg left and have a good look at the green. David Duval walked up on the tee in a nonchalant manner and kind of threw his ball down on the tee, grabbed his 3w from the bag, quickly set up and when he hit the ball it sounded like a black cat firecracker going off. It took off dead straight (the trajectory was perfect) like a laser shot for 250 yards and fell off maybe 5' to the right on descent. I have watched a lot of tour pro's in many tournaments hit tee shots but I have never seen a shot like that with such accuracy and effortless power. That shot sets in my mind as the greatest shot I have ever witnessed. It is exactly how you describe in your video reviews with a little one or two yard fade. I truly believe this is when he was playing his best as this would be his third tournament win in a row.

I played a round with him in a junior tournament in 86 at San Jose Country Club in Jax. I was 16 and he was 14. I watched him almost drive a couple of maybe 500 yard par 5's which was pretty good with that equipment we had back then. I didn't see him again until the 2004 Players on the 10th tee of the first round. Swing looked the same.

Hi Wayne, great analysis. How do you correct the hand path and get the hands coming out? Is there a drill?

Would like to an iron swing comparison. Even though the camera angle is off, he’s clearly dropping the hands and coming under the plane compared to 99’. I wonder if those differences were simply a gradual result of trying to keep up with Tiger off the tee over the years. Also could be spine angle, he’s definitely more upright in his transition in the latter years. Love this swing though, very similar to Annika as far as body rotation and finish. Great video per usual Wayne.

I don’t know if he for some reason just got into some bad habits or if he changed his swing because of excessive weight lifting but he was such a great ball striker, I watched him at the LA open at Riviera and when he hit his irons it was such a different sound from other players it was a very solid heavy hit. His ball flight with his irons seemed different the ball would get in a high trajectory very quickly and then it would just flatten out, like even though he hit his irons height the wind would not effect the ball much.

Wonder if he felt like he was dropping the club over the plane in 99. He certainly was more on top of it. It's a feel that really makes you open up and swing left. Snead looked similar.

So four years later, how did he digress to more across and flatter? It appears as though he is also coming out of his spine angle a bit. What happened? I know that pro impact does not have a stuck or closed look. It looks exactly like when you videotaped the practice round with him.

I played in college with Ted Tryba and later in various pro events and he hit it the same way although differing on a few points. But the sound of those shots at contact it was like a rifle. Now Ted did have a lot of spin from a more descending blow (most on Tour at the time) which contributes to that sound. Stricker was also in our conference and never hit it as good but would win more. Go figure, that is golf. DD back in the late 90s was the best out there.

Two Color Analyst observations: 1 - Really strong grip. 2 - Clothes were much baggier back then and the sleeves went to the elbow. Color Analysis over/

Looks like in the later photos he just set up further away from the ball, and changed his swing to accommodate that greater distance from the ball. Mr. Wayne, you do mention this as a difference in his swing.

Got injured. Lost confidence. Affected his mental health. Struggled to regain form. Lost his card. Had a family. Went in to TV commentary. Attempted comeback.. One of the all-time greatest to ever play the game..

You'd think a player of his caliber would have SOMEBODY in his corner who could have spotted these differences and told him he was getting too flat and stuck. Video recorders existed at that time.

I wonder if the mental side of golf contributes to may pros ending their careers before their time. There is an excellent program at www.hk-winning,com that deals with this subject in detail.

The comparison part 04:50 is way-off. The more recent footage is taken from about 2 yards offline! You can't say he's 'stuck' from that. You're clutching at straws. Loss of form doesn't always mean loss of swing-form...
@alanrobb9934
@alanrobb9934 5 лет назад
Woden of the Angles well said mate. Is ridiculous to equate Duvall loss of form to a tiny swing change. So much of it was down to injury,illness and the mental side. His swing was always a bit crazy looking, even at his peak
@wodenoftheangles3339
@wodenoftheangles3339 5 лет назад
+Alan Robb - Yes, absolutely. It has never looked a 'crazy' swing to me though, on the contrary I see it as one of the most free-flowing ever in the game. At the top of his game he produced possibly the closest to perfect golf we've seen - just such misfortune with the issues you mention. Very sad for the game, not least for David.

Also Wayne Defrancesco is wayyyyy off when he thinks that the video on the right is "4 or 5 years later". That video was actually shot in 1998. You can tell that by looking at the Purple and Gold UST driver shaft that he briefly used in his 975D Titleist Driver that year, as well as the Titleist hat and Tommy Hilfiger clothes, which he stopped wearing at the end of 1999. He switched clothing deals to Mossimo in 2000 and he stopped wearing the Titleist hat in 2001 when he switched to full Nike clothes and clubs. Wayne - You are actually comparing two swings from almost the exact same time period in which Duval was a ball striking machine. Get your facts straight.
