Genuinely the best round of golf I’ve ever watched. These days people either don’t know David Duval or forget how good he actually was - he became #1 when Tiger was in his prime - no easy task!

Yep, one of the best ever.

I remember man - Duval was a straight up killer and I still also remember conversations sitting around in the pro shop as schoolkids over who was better - Tiger or DD! Just crazy as bright as that flame was it went out just as quickly though! This was the peak of his powers though - something Tiger never did.

Watched it live on Sky, I was probably more nervous than he was. Glad he got a major, shame he faded.

Agreed 59 on a par 72..huge achiever to do it on a par 70 obviously but on a 72 it’s a joke how good that is

Duval was great back then, but it wasn’t Tiger’s prime. He was in the middle of a swing overhaul. By the second half of ‘99 his new swing clicked and it was game over.

I remember him teeing off with a 2 iron on one hole and just crushed it. I watched this with my late grandmother. What a round!

I remember watching this round, I was routing so hard for David. He was unbeatable when he was in top form.

Dude this deserves way more than a 2 minute video. That putt was also to win the tournament.

His win here was his 9th out of the 11 that he won in a year and a half stretch (Oct 97 thru Apr 99). He was definitely the best player on the planet for a couple of years.

I remember watching that round& it was definitely the best round of golf I’ve ever seen. Aside from the score, it was the fact that every single approach was RIGHT on the flag. Amazing precision with the irons.

I remember seeing some extended highlights of this around the time it happened, and as mentioned in the video by David himself, his iron play that day was on another level. The vast majority of his birdies were coming from inside 5 feet or so, and it was a bit like watching someone playing a golf computer game on 'too low a level' at times. Though I no longer play myself, I could watch Duval (and Els) in that era swing the club all day. Just made things look so effortless 'back in the day'. I'd clicked on this link assuming it'd show some of those shots (at least more than they did), but sadly it wasn't the case. And whilst I get that at the outset of the final round he was far enough off the pace for every shot not to have been captured on TV - until it was clear he was on a charge, the footage I'd seen previously (on BBC) had shown around 6-7 of the non-18th hole approaches, so you'd think there'd be more footage in the archives. Scary level golf.

Tiger only true rival , just imagine if he never had back injuries or vertigo, the most perfect swinging of a golfer since Bobby Jones , unbelievable swing that no one can re create!!

I was watching it in SLC, and right as he was on the 18th green, ready to putt, some idiots at the local station (I think it was Ch 4, Utah) decided to break away for some ridiculous news conference about the upcoming 2002 Winter Olympic in SLC. The greatest closing round ever, a 59, and the dingdongs think somehow ppl are more interested in a press conference!

I think that maybe Duval was the greatest golfer ever - for maybe a two-year stretch. He was downright phenomenal. It’s too bad he lost confidence or whatever happened. But at that time I’d turn on golf tournaments the final day to watch him play. (I think it was Bobby Jones although he was WAY before my time. But I believe he won everything and he was winning as an amateur.)

Awesome 59 shame he lost form and had injury issues he was the only one who could have competed with tiger in his prime what a shame for golf fans . My all time favourite swing.

I just got into golf last year and I've landed on Duval being my golf swing role model. I do a few different things, but when I think of his swing and try to emulate it, usually I'm pretty successful
@bfcfan2739
@bfcfan2739 3 года назад
@@AjaxNixon I'm exactly the same. I've watched his swing over and over and it's been the easiest way to build a reliable swing. Gone from 15 to 8 in a yr since adopting his swing keys
@AjaxNixon
@AjaxNixon 3 года назад
@@bfcfan2739 thats awesome. I just started last year so am still pretty inconsistent, but sometimes I pure the ball so well that it keeps me coming back. I'm trying to imitate it alittle better and my biggest problem right now is I have a tendency to get bunched up on my swing instead of everything having a nice flow. I think it has something to do with my club angle at the top

Hard to believe now, but l remember reading actual negative articles about his 59 back in the day. Where he was criticized for not emoting enough, or his fist pump afterwards was not adequate, or something like that. I'd like to see any of his critics back then shoot a 59 or anything close to it.
