What I love about the Mirror I sailed (that my daughter bought on line without inspection!) was how basic it was. It didn't have out or down-pull, kicking strap, toe-strap, cord for raising rudder or mainsail strap to the mast, but it was a delight to sail. It was fortunate it was so rudimentary as I had never rigged a boat or sailed before and I was 60 when I started on self-taught adventure.
What I did notice is that after feeding the mainsheet to the pulley on the boom you fed it directly to your hand. Normally this would go through the pulley on the boom and across to another pulley on the opposite side of the transom and then to the helm's hand (for a Rear Main Sheet). T his would enable the boom to be positioned more central on either tack.
Hey great vid guys. You both seemed so cool and carefree until you mentioned picking the kids up from school! 🤣 But as a fellow Mirror enthusiast I salute you ⛵️😊✌️
Enjoyed the video. I find the vang is a real nuisance when I have a crew, so I remove it. Regarding jib sheets, the modern racing idea is to have them inside the shrouds, but I do it the old way as the sail is better on a run.
Cheers mate, we have the jib sheets inside the shrouds. It's the way the last owner has it set up. We have a spinnaker and the halyard for it but no pole and no idea how it works and how to make one 😂
Interesting how the sheet for the mainsail goes straight from the transom to the boom for control. Thought the sheet then went from the boom back down to the transom for control. Was this a development in later Mirrors? Thanks for the simple fun side of sailing.
The tack should be secured around the boom with a clevis or a loop. The foot of the sail is too high. Learned to sail as a kid on a Mirror. Great little boat.
Worried about lack of block (pulley) on transom for main sheet. No purchase for close haul, and if wind gets up little control. But looks free n easy...
@@sailingsinkorswim4305 Not if your shrouds are in good condition, they should be smooth. Also they don't have much contact with the shrouds as the jib is usually holding them away, which is the reason for not having the sheet inside the shroud, it restricts the ability to set the jib correctly.
lol yep that's where your wrong its a Bogan Pirate channel which includes sailing and we are trying to do things differently to get a younger new generation interested in sailing, cheers for the comment happy sailing.
If you guys are really serious about sailing and getting others into the sport, get yourself some life jackets!!!! You may be the best swimmers in the world but if you cop a whack in the head from the boom and you go overboard, you are just shark bait from then on.
