I moved to Naperville from Greece in September of 2007. I am searching videos late at night as I’m having nostalgia about those days. I was 14 at the time and it was one of the most significant events of my life. Thank you for sharing and for putting this together. Hope all is well!
Bought this camera senior year of high school back 2007. I can't explain it but to this day, it was one of my favorite cameras ever. Beautiful design and excellent picture quality. I wish canon would revisit this design some day.
This camera has held up so well through the years i take it to nearly every music video or project that might need that soft vaguely dated look. A real gem
Hey! I was born in Naperville July 25th 2007 in DuPage hospital and I’d just like to thank you for capturing my childhood memories that I haven’t experienced for around 10 years. I specifically remember the Teds Montana grill. I know this seems like you solved a really neiche problem but thinks for combining two things I love
This will be my reference video when I get my XHA1s. This footage is perfect. I would ask what were your settings but of course this video is from 2007 and I will need to experiment with the camera.
There’s just something about the XL2 that’s reminiscent of a 16mm camera. I had the XL-1 when it came out and then bought the XL-2. I think it still holds up as long as you’re showing it on iPhones. I shot a ton of stuff on the ‘wide angle zoom’ that they sold separately. Also for some reason I loved the sound that camera could get just from the onboard mic. I still own my XL-2 and love shooting with it for things that will show on iPhones and small screens.
Excellent footage. This type of style was heavily used in Dawn of Dead (2004) with the strong contrast and half coloring. It also delivers in the style of 28 Days Later (2001) but they used the XL1.
crushing the blacks and high contract were def the in style for the early 2000s.. it also was one of the better looks you could shoot on DV as it didnt worry about dynamic range and worked within the confines of a small tonal range.
Not much. Most of this came from in camera on the XL2 years ago. The majority of my older work on Mini DV is me getting the look i want in camera given its weak codec. I just added a little more grain in this remaster and exported it out as 4k
I need ylu to help me understand how to get these results because ive been putting off purchasing this because im afraid the footage will look like crap. But you have proven that wrong.
I think to note because Mini DV is so compressed with so little information to begin with, its best to try to get as close to the final look in camera and bake it in. Mini DV likes shadows being crushed because there is not a lot of information in there to begin with and exposing with the purpose to protect the highlights. Dont let ANYTHING clip, try to control that as best you can.
Hello, really beautiful cinematography. I have the same camera, I can't get the best image out of it because I'm only taking a screenshot through quik time, could you tell me what cables I need or what is the best way to get the best result? I would really appreciate it, a big hug. @nicolasclausen
I captured this via firewire. It was originally cut on Final Cut Pro 7 in 2007 on a powermac g5, and the remaster was done taking the original prores file from 2007 and putting it into a 4k timeline in fcpx
