Kenny, honest mechanics like you are gold. I have a very good friend who owns and operates a three-stall garage. He is as honest and forthcoming as you are. He recently sold the entire business and is retiring. Two of his regular female customers broke down in tears when he informed them. Now, I need a new mechanic, too, but, I didn't cry (at least, not in front of him). You guys are gold!!

I've certainly seen broken park pawls, particularly in older, fully hydraulic transmissions (C4, TorqueFlites and Borg Warners). It's one reason I ALWAYS use the Park brake. Transmission park is meant to be a supplement to the park brake, not the main means of holding the vehicle. Good work on looking at it a bit more thoroughly than the others.

The real problem here is the dishonesty and/or incompetence of so many repair shops. Everybody wants a short answer to their problems, and the dishonest shops are more than willing to take their money and perform minor repairs for major prices. I'm glad we still have a few honest guys like you around.

The pawl is spring loaded because the engagement is purely mechanical. The transmission is designed to engage the pawl and hold it into position without hydraulic pressure. Engaging in motion will quickly round the edges of the pawl and cog. Same as missing a shift in a manual transmission, that grinding is rounding off the gears.
@tbyoda9475

i was thinking the same thing, so really while it not detrimental right away if you kept doing that you would wear out the gears and have no parking lock.

As other people have said, Ken your a true and honest Mechanic who knows customers will Always come back to you AND recommend you to their friends. 'Word of Mouth' is the best advertising you can get. I recently had a dash light come on (again). I knew exactly what it was and it just needed clearing before a planned road trip. My scan tool is a very very basic one so I can't do it myself, (currently researching an upgrade). My car (a Dacia/Renault) has a service light AND an oil service warning light. The oil light reset for some reason is in the Dashboard Display settings? I drove around 4 different shops and the cheapest quote was around $60 just to look at it and a 2 week wait to do it. To Heck with that!! On the way home I remembered a tiny little shop less than a mile from my house. I called in anyway. He was busy swapping a BMW front spring but when I explained what I needed he came straight over, cleared the light and charged my the price of a cold beer to do it. A good mechanic!

I always thought putting it in park while not completely stopped would damage the pawl. This makes me wonder then if backing up and putting it in drive before coming to a complete stop would damage anything. Again, intuitively I would think it might because you are slamming the torque converter in the opposite direction. I have accidentally done it and know some who do it routinely (again, from a crawl, but still moving) but I don't hear of them having to get a new TC or trans because of it.
@raoulcruz4404
@raoulcruz4404 10 месяцев назад
Putting the vehicle in Park while still in motion can damage the transmission. That noise is the pawl rounding off the corners of the sprag Might take a dozen or more attempts but will eventually cause the pawl to slip and the car will roll. The torque converter always spins in the same direction. Drive to reverse or reverse to drive while the car is in motion is bad. Puts a tremendous strain on internal components of the transmission.

I see a phone charger plugged into the dash. I had a Taurus and an Impala of a friend of mine that when you go out and open the door, it is like the battery was disconnected. No dome light, no nothing with both vehicles. Unplugged the phone charger and both would start. Also had a Ford minivan in the 90 or so year, would always refuse to start if the phone charger was plugged in to either of the 2 ports. I figure the Jeep if it had some electrical issue like you have, and I saw the charge cable looks like a dollar store cheap charger, that may create a funky electrical issue.

I just a mechanic install a transmission shift cable in a 1999 Honda CR-V and it needs to be adjusted so i can go from park into drive. 5 different mechanics in New Jersey can not figure out how to do it. All keep replacing neutral safety switch with no good results. Very frustrating. I am about to drive from n.j. to Kenny's new shop if he gets me an appointment. Any thoughts from the crowd?

Why was parking pawl heard trying to engage while you were in drive creeping forward?
@anonymuswere
@anonymuswere 10 месяцев назад
*snort* That's probably why it wasn't spotted and they thought it was broken; guys are so used to everything being electronically controlled, that they don't think (or remember) that there are still mechanical bits :P. That parking pawl saved my butt when I had an emergency. I was heading into town to get my parents an anniversary present when suddenly No Brakes...and I was behind a little Aveo waiting to turn. Hilariously, this was literally *right in front of a dealership*. turns out a weld spontaneously snapped on my rear axle...and the cross line for the rear brakes was attached to it. what caused the brake mess was the fact the vehicle had a single-chamber master cylinder instead of dual (and, inevitably, a seized-up parking brake)

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt if I can. Here I wonder if the diagnosis was made by a service writer, without even putting the car in the air.... Diagnostic time is so poorly paid, especially when news is bad, they tend to shoot from the hip by making a guess to prepare the customer for bad news. I like to think that with a closer look they would have taken the time to rule out the easy stuff right away. But with that bad news the customer pulls the plug and the next guy makes a little more effort to rule out the easy diagnosis. Across all industries we're in the process of a brain drain, with boomers retiring and the drift of young people away from blue collar careers. In a small shop the new guys may not have any mentor to offer guidance.

Disagree with your comment that putting it into park while still rolling will not hurt it!!! Many years ago I bought a Dodge Van that had a transmission leak. After checking everything else I found that the case around the park pawl had a crack in it. Had to completely disassemble the transmission and have the case welded and that stopped 90% of the leak. My belief is that the previous owner had been putting the Van into Park Gear before they stopped causing the crack in the case.
