Oh boy...
This 2012 Ford Focus didn't even make it to 100k miles, and is having MAJOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS with it's fancy "Dual Clutch Automatically Shifted Manual" DPS6 Transmission.
It BARELY made it to my shop under its own power!
Anyone surprised?
Let's diagnose the issue and see if we can make the car drivable again without breaking the bank.
Yes, some parts ARE required!

Why would that surprise you? They kept making the 1.6 liter Escort for five years, even though they knew that the water pump would strip the timing belt and bend the valves, and the car would then run hot. They knew it had problems with splitting the thin cylinder walls. They started building that engine in '80 for the '81 Escort, I believe, and didn't upgrade it until '85 1/2. The 1.9 was only marginally better and still had major issues.

You notice this after owning the car for a while. I have Forscan diagnostic equipment and can do the same as workshops if I dare. The Mondeo mk4 is far from the worst car to repair or far from the worst car when it comes to parts prices. Power shift is not a good automatic gearbox! The internal large oil filter, which after several years clogs up, cannot be easily replaced. Things, particles can stick to solonoyder to create problems! Then the gearbox often goes into limited function mode. Then you have DPF. the diesel particle filter system on the diesel cars which always causes problems on diesel cars.

My Daughter had a 13 Focus. First, when it was running correctly it was a great car, very peppy and good MPG (32-36). Second, It did have several transmission issues and had to be reprogrammed several times for jerky shifts, stalling and not shifting at the correct points. The TCM did fail resulting in a "No Start" condition and had to be towed to the dealer. The dealer said they needed to install rubber shocks in the replacement unit and after almost a week the received the parts and it ran good for another few months. She traded that POS in a few months later and never looked back again. At 24:35 the second from the right right driver FETs is missing in your TCM, most likely blown off of the board by high current. Those are indeed 3 phase motors. Love your contend, keep them coming. Thank you Ivan! Oops, Just caught your "damaged by the air hammer" comment. My bad.

There is an active recall for the TCM's on that vehicle that expires at the end of August'23. Transmission Control Module Ford Focus Recall Power train: Automatic transmission: Control module (tcm, pcm) Recall no. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Focus Electric vehicles manufactured September 15, 2011, through August 23, 2013. I had my TCM replaced 2 years ago at the State College dealer free of charge. The TCM wouldn't auto learn and had a code (can't remember exact code) that indicated the non-volatile memory had failed. I didn't pay much money for my car, and only have 35K on it, and with 3 clutch replacements since I purchased it 5 or 6 years ago. For the 'typical' shudder issue that everyone seems to experience, I follow the procedure that FordTechMakuloco posted 8 years ago, and this works well!! I do it every time it acts up which is 2-3 times per year. Here is a link to that video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-msA0p87O2y4.html

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics, Actually that was typical for those years. When I was talking to the tech at the dealership, they had one guy, full time, replacing clutches and rear main oil seals on these cars. The reason they kept changing clutches, from what they told me, is the manf. was changing the clutch material to solve the shudder problem. Essentially, the clutch material was to 'sticky'. The final clutch they put in, definitely slips a tad more than the original sets. I don't have the shudder problem any more, but the computer algorithm gets wonky after a couple of months of driving, so I have to perform the procedure laid out by FordTechMakuloco in the linked video... At least it was all covered under warranty... I still hear of some people getting the clutches and rear main seal being replaced free of charge, but only one in the past 2 years. This car is a love hate relationship. I hate the tranny, I love the gas mileage. Once you get on I-70 west, I get 40+ MPG... If I draft behind a semi, I can sustain 50 MPG.. My 2012 recently started acting up. (115000) miles. Check engine light cam on and began shifting in an erratic manner. Nursed it home and car would not go into reverse. Coincidentally, while I was contemplating what to do, a letter from Ford informed me that TCM’s in those cars would be replaced up June 2024 with 150000 miles or less. I took it to a Ford dealer and they said that there was a bulletin on reprogramming the TCM. Since that time the car has driven well. It probably shifts better than it ever did. The typical shudder that these transmissions have has gone away. Fingers crossed that it stays that way for sometime.

My 2012 focus TCM died at 45k miles. Nothing but issues with it until that point. Dealer I bought it from was no help and the manager all but threw me out of the shop when I told him I wanted a real mechanic to drive the car and feel the transmission shifts because he kept saying they reprogrammed the module and there were no error codes so no issues. Then I had a no crank no start. No comm with the TCM. Had it towed to a different dealer. Told them my symptoms, no comm, and my troubleshooting. They said, no problem, we'll warranty a new TCM and then asked if I was having shifting issues. The said they'd warranty a new clutch pack as well, transmission is an issue and they want to hold Ford accountable to their word. Since that repair, I'm over 100k miles issue free, drives great, averaging 34 mpg. Big kudos to the dealers that still work to take care of the customer, even if you didn't buy the car from their lot.

Ivan, here in Brazil, Fix it Or Repair Daily and worldwide shot it self in the head by putting this stupid powershift trans on EcoSport, Focus and Fiesta I think 🙄, to do a clutch service costs roughly $2000.00 US which is way too much , most clients when they figure out how deep into the pockets they have to go they cry. This goes also for GM with easytronics, VW with imotion, and Fiat with automation. GOOD THING you told your client to get rid of it ASAP! Excellent video for your viewers to see and avoid these Trans.

Yeah I’ve heard those solenoids/actuators are junk. Thankfully when I bought a 2017 focus it had a manual transmission a five speed. Must have been one of the earlier ones they put in mine or they changed the design by 2017. Haven’t had a lick of trouble with the transmission. But other issues plague it. On your advice I picked up an mk 808ts Autel scanner. It’s a slick little scanner. Scans all the modules and shows Ed all the codes. Went to all data and paid for a years subscription. I found a ground missing for my wipers(dredded little critters chewd on a few of the wires. I’m glad I picked it up. Thanks for the tip Ivan. Good luck with that focus.

The boards don't come apart from what I saw; they are connected with press on design; there are people that rebuild them but from what I experienced, they are hard to separate, I only fixed the solder joints that I could see but the rest live in between both boards that I could not separate. These modules have been on backorder for years now and the only viable option is to send it out for repair, a lot of eBayers that offer the service.
@zzoinks

I bet the engineers who were (I'm assuming) too lazy or management that was too cheap to make a repairable design didn't wager on a global pandemic and supply chain shortage. So they've screwed the customer service reps, who are the ones to break the bad news of the supply shortage, and the owner by making a hard to repair design. Now I'm curious if John Deere who tried to disable tractors when owners diy fixed them would ever anticipate some Internet connectivity problem or attack that would brick all their locked down farm equipment that's needed to give people food. John Deere ended up being forced by regulation to stop their anti-repair practices.

If you look at how the 2 boards connect inside the TCM, they are just push-fit onto the pins, not soldered. This is a common failure point, so if nothing else is faulty, they can sometimes be fixed by soldering all the pins. I get this exact same failure on some Sega arcade boards

Love your videos, thanks. The trans died 3 times on my wife's '13 Focus. Last time it was at the dealer so long waiting for a TCM that it came back with a family of mice inside. It's unfortunate because the rest of the car is pretty reliable and it's nice to drive. I would feel bad selling this POS to someone, so we're just trying to get the most out of it until the trans goes again and we have to buy an overpriced, overcomplicated newer car.

In India, we had issues by the boatloads of DSG(DQ200), DCT dry clutch transmissions cooking up with weird mechatronics failures. Only solution proposed by the independents was to shift the transmission to N in case the vehicle stops for more than 5 seconds and changing the DSG fluids more frequently. That reduced the failures but we did keep a piggy bank labeled DQ200 fund for such a contingency as it cost 20 percent of the car value to replace it. Oddly, the DQ250 which was a wet clutch DSG, did not suffer from such issues.
@papapetad
@papapetad 10 месяцев назад
The dq200 is mk5 golf era 1st gen dsg, right? I saw a ton of mk 5's for sale in Europe with f'd dsg's. Really wanted a mk5 but seeing all those dead cars for sale kept me away and I went mk6 instead despite preferring the mk5 shape. This has a 7-speed dsg. It still makes me uncomfortable, especially with having an extra gear I don't see a need for. I'd prefer 6 beefy gearsets with less parts but seems this trans is much more reliable overall. Is this the dq250?
@gsudarshan7251
@gsudarshan7251 10 месяцев назад
@@papapetad we never had the golfs in India. We had the polo, Octavia 1.8 and the superb petrol 1.8 with this dq200 transmission as option. All these tanked in value the moment the warranty period got over.

I have a 2016 Focus, fortunately it's the ST with the MT6. Surprise surprise, zero trans issues and 180k miles on the car and it still runs great. @cjhs77338
@cjhs77338 10 месяцев назад
There are 2 big issues with the DPS6 transmission. 1. It is a dry clutch. Ford was told that it needed to be a wet clutch but went dry to save money. 2. The TCM remembers the bad driving habits of the driver. If the driver is light on the gas pedal it will cause stuttering later on. If you drive the car like it is a manual it does not have as many TCM issues.

Ivan, this must be one of the very rare ocassions when even a Dorman part is better than OE. I only know of Dorman's reputation becuase of Eric O. and I'm in the UK. Module repair services are the way forward as a cost effective repair and for when new ones become unobtanium. I'm lucky that there is such a service for my 2003 Volvo XC90 (I've had to call on their services twice already).

I'm surprised this wasn't covered under Ford's extended warranty for replacement of the this TCM component. I also own a '12 Focus (second owner) and just had my replaced under warranty at a local Ford Dealer. In late June '23 I received a letter from with my vehicle VIN that said my car was eligible for a one time warranty replacement of the TCM. Not three days later and out of the blue, the TCM failed. At first the dealership said they were going to charge me a $200 diagnostic fee, but I resisted, and they ended up replacing the TCM under warranty and at no cost to me. It may be that because the original owner took the car back to the dealership for all of the previous recall notices, the car was on Ford's radar for this warranty repair.

Make sure you can or want to deal with Problems others are having with said Vehicle, Knowledge is power only if applied, Many Car brands have Forum's online where people are logging their complaints, You would be surprised by what people complain about 😀.

The motors look to be Brushless DC, which are more powerful that steppers and can run at higher revs when needed; I believe you will find that there are magnets on the ends of the motor shafts, and the two 20 pin ICs near the centre line of the PCB are centred exactly behind them? If so, they will be magnetic angle transducers that allow the motor position and rotation to be tracked & the data is also used for "commutation" control of the three phase motor winding.

Interesting teardown of the TCM - really not made to be repaired. BTW, those two motors are BLDC (Brushless DC), that run on 3-phase low voltage, just like the ones in quadcopters, only much more powerful.
