Paul Another good video and one that Ian and myself have also talked about. You brought up drag force and that is very very minute around 1 to 2.5 grams at most. The motor on a good turntable does not have any problem over coming. I personally think you did a very good job again putting things into laymen' s terms for those that didn't have a clue about. It is great to help others to come to terms with Turntable and HiFi usage. Thank you for giving those of us that need a deeper understanding for our own sanity.

Brother Paul!!! Fantastic demonstration!!! What can I say man! :-D Thorough, and you took the efforts to go to your retailer to use the Stanton Direct Drive for testing! And please don't worry this video is boring to us... it isn't at all! I watched with eyes fully opened and glued from start to finish :-D Please make more of such videos up to your discretion and wonderful knowledge. We cherish all of them. Belt drive motors require isolation because the motor noise is great. Motor speed / 60 will give you the rumble frequency. for a belt drive that is typically 60hz, for a direct drive it is 0.5hz. Direct drive motor rumble is simply not audible. Off topic, i know but I thought it was important since a comment is made in the video about it.

@BarakaPDub

+loonacy4 I don't know why it is but the Rega models all seem to have that inclination. Even the RP10 according to Michael Fremer. I find it strange that Rega wouldn't have resolved this problem in their higher end models. Regardless, the bottom line is that we both already have a star student, we just don't have the ace of spades ;) thanks for watching.

Always happy to get more subs but I am content with what I have right now so I can focus on responding to everyone. I like the interaction with folks and if I had more subs, it would make it more challenging. It may sound strange as there are folks that would love to have thousands of subs but it can be a double edged sword.

Something I notice is that the app display rotates automatically to be legible. It's using it's own measurements to adjust for rotation... so when it's measurements are 'off' the image on the display fails to maintain orientation as the phone rotates. You can see this on a previous video and I saw the same when I attempted to use an app for my turntable. So perhaps a good check when using an app is to watch the orientation of the image display, if it rotates, even very slowly as the platter spins, then you can witness the degree of error.

I honestly think there are people who are way too concerned about turntable speed being locked on at 33.3 perfectly, when, as you know, they REALLY should be concerned with the precision of staying true at a speed - I'd rather have a table with a lower wow/flutter but not 33.3 than the other way around :) That is where I hope the apps would be more revealing - even the strobe discs can be hard to read on fluctuation, especially with all the other dots/markers moving... and of course our ear can tell us something is wrong usually quicker anyway - I didn't need my strobe to tell me there was something wrong with my Sansui - the sax notes of Ornette told me :)

Excellent video! Believe it or not I have made it through all the videos you have posted on equipment and music. I think you do a fantastic job particularly with your level of knowledge, scientific approach and humility. I have purchased at least 30 pieces of vinyl / cd's based on your recommendations. I have never really been into jazz but i have purchased a Blue Note 14 CD boxset, the story of Impulse records boxset, the Prestige record story and the Riverside records story to dip my toe in the jazz waters. I also purchased a Rega turntable. Also the Michell clamp! I would love to see a video on the record pressing plants around the world that produce the vinyl of the artists you follow. I read today United is or has expanded there capacity. Ugh! Keep up the great work!

+Jason Lawrence Thanks so much for the kind comments and I hope you have enjoyed some of my recommendations. I do admit Jazz is not for everyone but I am happy you're giving it a go. There are still some sub genres in the medium that I can't regularly listen too (i.e. Free Jazz). As for the Record Pressing Plants, that's not a bad idea. I was looking to do a series of shorts on deadwax inscriptions and that might fit in well.

Direct Drive is a brushless motor so no motor rumble through the chassis or platter, don't believe bullshit. It doesn't effect the sound like other platters with an AC-motor or motor with brushes. It depends on the whole construction of the turntable.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 7 лет назад
While I do agree with the critically of the construction, brushless motors still vibrate and that just translates directly up the platter and into the tonearm. With the SL1200G, Technics went with a new design. In their words, 'the deck uses a newly developed "coreless" motor in an effort to remove cogging.'
@Zockopa
@Zockopa 6 лет назад
The Stanton deck in your video is actualy a Hanpin. Hanpin direct drives simply doesnt have the same precision and build quality of their paragons. Measure a old Technics direct drive like a SL-1600MK2 and you get the idea. Also S/N ratio will be higher on the vintage deck. Its simply throughout better quality. Not to mention way higher comfort and better handling for home use.
@mcgjohn22

interesting video. static running speed may not be the same as dynamic speed with a stylus in a groove, since the load is going to be constantly changing. Another option to do a dynamic test is to get a test tone record. play the record through the phono preamp. Feed the preamp output to a frequency counter. You can see how much or how little variation the turntable as a system is producing under dynamic conditions.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub Год назад
I will concede the stylus will add a little amount of drag but I think you will find it very negligible compared to other forces acting against the platter. I do have a test tone record and the results were the same.
@CactusCowboy57
@CactusCowboy57 5 лет назад
Regarding potential stylus drag impacting speed accuracy. That force is so insignificantly small compared to the torque driving the platter and inertia of the platter. If there were indeed a measurable effect induced by stylus drag, that would indicate a design wherein torque driving the platter is marginal to the point of barely being functional.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 5 лет назад
Hello Cactus Cowboy! I agree with you completely. I am sure it could be measured but you would really need to have something specialized because it should be very, very marginal. Like...0.000001% or something like that.
@yankeedoodledandy11
@yankeedoodledandy11 5 лет назад
Hey Cactus Cowboy, I found it was measurable but only a very small margin. Increased tracking force shows this affect up more However, the stability of speed (in my opinion) is more important.
@idtubenod

Awesome AB comparison. I checked out the video that prompted you to replicate the test. Your testing was IMHO better - simply because you positioned the phone in the center of the TT. Placing the phone off center would generate uneven force and additional stress similar to an unbalanced spin cycle in a washing machine.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 5 лет назад
Thank you sir. Yeah I figured having it most central would produce the best results. While there is some error factor with the accelerometers built into the phones, I figure they are quite small. I should look up the specs if their available.

BarakaPDub Using my Galaxy S7 with the “RPM Speed and Wow” app I placed the phone at the center on my ‘ol Technics SL-220 - the app reads slower when the strobe reads 33rpm at 60Hz (lowest the strobe band is stationary). I’ll try to replicate this on my NAD 533 when I find a good strobe disk. Thanks again for your invaluable VC videos.

The platter isn't really in contact with the motor in direct drive turntables. The plater is essentially the spinning part of the motor with a circular magnet built in and is turned by the changing field in the stator mounted in the plinth.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 7 лет назад
I guess it's a matter of interpretation but you are correct. In most cases, the platter is connected to the spindle or rests on a subplatter that drives it.

Did the same test on my brand new Rega P1 plus. I found the drag was measurable. On a Technics deck, the motors are very strong, high torque and have a fast start up time.. There is a measurable difference when using a standard belt Vs upgraded belt by the likes of Edwards Audio on the Rega.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment and I really need to do a follow up to this one. I did the same test with the record on the platter and found the effects of drag to be negligible. I mean...a good turntable/cart designer would want them to be.
@yankeedoodledandy11
@yankeedoodledandy11 5 лет назад
Also, I don't think the Technics deck has a direct connection between the motor and spindle. It is separated by magnet so that DJs can stop the platter while the motor is still spinning, while avoiding damage.

The motor and the spindle are essentially one in the same from what I've seen. It uses a Stator design to induce the torque.

There are direct drives and there are direct drives..... The good ones, like the Technics SL-1200 series, won't transmit any kind of rumble up towards the platter. The bad ones though, like the Stanton and some other bottom of the range turntables like the Audio-Technica clone AT-LP-120 (with or without the USB facility) of the Technics, will transmit the motor rumble to the platter, audible! The Technics, as a matter of fact, is dead silent, even better than many m.o.t.r. belt driven turntables. Look at the figures, that is, if a manufacturer states those figures. REGA doesn't. Why is that do you think? I guess you guessed it. Simply because those specs can't compete with the specs of the Wheel of Steel.......
@BarakaPDub

The new Technics has me intrigued because they have found the solution to the problem by using a cog-less motor. Again, I am seriously considering making the 1200G my next table.

Agreed! I own and use two Technics quartz-locked direct drive (SL-1200MK5 and SP-15) in my studio and the speed accuracy is superb. As for alleged cogging and motor noise, nonsense. That's BS promoted by belt drive manufacturers whose turntables cannot match the precision, accuracy and performance of a well designed direct drive.
@robertnicholson7733
@robertnicholson7733 3 года назад
@@BarakaPDub Cogging is unfortunately a bit of an old wives tale that gets perpetuated. Cogging, what there was of it, and there wasn't much, disappeared when the Japanese manufacturers eliminated cores from the motors (this also made the motor cheaper to manuafacture and lighter - when Pioneer changed the motor to a pancake in the PL-L1000A from the old high top in the PL-L1000, they had to bolt a 9x3x1/4 piece of flat steel to the underchassis to avoid changing the suspension). The argument for cogging was based on the change of reluctance brought about by having cores and slots rotating pass each other. You can see cogging in effect with a stepping motor which is designed to have high cogging. When you turn it by hand the motor will jump from one position to another. You will not find that in a DD TT, even the old ones with cores. Once the cores were eliminated, the cogging effect was gone, all you had was a magnet being propelled by a two phase rotating field, there was nothing to cog to! As a side issue, with careful design you can actually get a stepping motor to turn smoothly, no not turntable quality but nevertheless better than you would expect. At the end of big vinyl, there were no DD TTs that cogged, even the cheap ones. Amongst my 20 TTs I have a Realistic lab 2200 that was bought for a project for almost nothing. This machine, like most turntables, was built by the same manufacturer that built about 80% of TTs (I can't remember the company's name but I have a vague recollection that it was subsidiary of NEC), even this TT (AKA a Sherwood) used the same style of "pancake" motor used by all the high-end DD TTs. The only other option you have for a DD TT is the eddy current motor used in the B&O Beogram 8000 & 8002 turntables. Eddy current motors are not new in audio, they were used in open reel tape deck reel motors for many a year. But B&O made the eddy current drive suitable for turntables. Its precision (in these circumstances, stability may have been a better term) is very good. If anyone wishes to argue that cogging existed in DD TTs at the end of big vinyl, please muster your arguments of what the motor is going to cog to. Regards, Robert

I like my old Kenwood direct drive. Always right on. I have not had rumble/etc issues but. I got a weight/clamp that was fairly heavy. It was putting too much weight on the motors bottom bearing and causing noticeable rumble. So I'm not using it. I need one of those light plastic clamps.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
+Richard Riley Yes, you need to be cautious when using a weight. Too much weight will definitely accelerate the degradation of your bearing and bearing wear will cause a rumble. Some of those old Kenwood turntables are built like tanks.

You know, since doing this video I have tried different things and the weight addition to the motor has a negligible effect. That's not to say it doesn't but once the platter gets up to speed, the centripetal force helps to keep it locked in.

I'm a subscriber of Ian's and watch a lot of his videos, but didn't catch that one yet. I have the AT-LP120 and have done the check with my Samsung Note 4 and mine comes in exact. I've read that belt TTs tend to be slightly on the fast side, but I can see it's not true for all. My TT has several mods, but the first one I did was to spray the underside of the aluminum platter with Flex Seal. Direct drives has their trade offs, but I believe they can be modified to rid of most of any motor noise. I enjoyed your detailed video!

As for the phone apps, wouldn't the gyroscope in the phone have to be centered on the axis of rotation to be accurate?
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 4 года назад
There is always going to a bit of inaccuracy, even if it was dead center. I have been trying to find Apple's published specs on their digital gyros but I couldn't find anything. It's probably all proprietary. I do think the information is reliable to the tenth's of an RPM and there is always going to be tiny fluctuations. That's just my opinion though so please take it with a grain of salt. If I was really on my game and had a lab, you could do some true measurements to find the true error bands.

@BarakaPDub

+Gilbert Giroux The weight of the phone has minimal impact on the reading because the ball bearing the subplatter is resting on is taking the load. Once you get the centripetal force going, that much weight doesn't matter too much. That said, it does take it a little longer to get to speed with more weight added. Good question.

I have a question you maybe able to help with. I just ordered a mono version of The Mom's and Papas on gold vinyl and I heard someone in another video say that mono disc should not be played with a stereo cartridge that it will harm the disc? So on a previous video on setting up the cartridge it took the guy a few hours, so do you change cartridges each time to a mono one or get another turntable or is this guy mistaken about this? Thanks I don't want to damage my first new mono album!
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 6 лет назад
My suggestion is to ignore that advice. A stereo cart will not damage a mono album at all. It's really the interior make up the cartridge that is different. That said, older Mono recordings may have a lot of static caused by the stereo picking up a dead channel so it's best to invest in a Mono Switch if you can or just build a Y bridge to cancel out one channel. Now, if you have a lot of Mono records, there are some that swear that a good Mono cart will produce better results. Personally, I don't want to mess with it because my tonearm doesn't let me change carts on the fly. You really need a Technics or an Audio Technica to do that. Hope that helps.
@yankeedoodledandy11

What troubles me is that while it's fine comparing the speed by strobe and the app, neither allow for the drag created by the weight of the tone arm on the record.
@BarakaPDub

While I do agree there is drag, it should be minimal. The diamond stylus is polished so the coefficient of friction should be small. If the coefficient of friction was high and the torque was high, you would basically be chewing up your vinyl.

To measure drag force the stylus needs to be playing the music, no point in measuring on the smooth edge, it needs to be in the roughness of the music.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 5 лет назад
True but I figure the effects will be very, very minimal. I would figure working against the viscosity of the bearing oil, some friction by the ball bearing, and belt forces would be a greater impact.

That's interesting! By coincidence I was at a rehearsal and saw a guitar player tuning his axe with a phone, and wondered how the phone would compare to a "regular" tuner, though those have all but disappeared. Knowing that the AC line frequency can vary somewhat, I'd expect a better time base to be the next step up. A quartz crystal is probably good enough for human hearing, though I'd expect some to want an atomic time base just because. That raises an interesting question: Is there any need to measure your speed then? If so, against what?
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 6 лет назад
So one of the reasons I feel its good to adjust your speed is if you're power supply unit is adjustable or belts start to wear over time. I just acquired the new power supply unit from Rega that allows for speed adjustments. Straight out of the box it was not at 33.3 rpm and when you played the record, you could tell the pitch was off. I don't think you'll ever be spot on 100% accurate at all times.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 6 лет назад
Good point. I had assumed that there would be some factory calibration. Yet I know from experience that what's right in the factory can be different when it arrives. D'oh! I suppose you can spend a lot to have a calibrated reference that's accurate to some absolute standard, or adjust until it sounds right. Come to think of it, what if a given record was cut at a slightly off RPM. Cumulative effects. Thanks!

Nice looking turntable (the Stanton, i mean), nicer than my SL1200, i own. And..is it realy so important? 0,01 % slower or faster?? Maybe I'm wrong..

For most people...0,01% really isn't a big deal. Seriously. But for some, their is a claim that the inaccuracy can be heard in long sustained notes. I really don't recommend trying to pursue accuracy unless your an audiophile nut ;)

Hi Paul, Can you help me with a turntable speed query please? I have a new rega tt psu mk2 power supply for my Rega 5 turntable. I have used the iphone app to check the speed and its running at 33.75, ie fast. At this quicker speed would you be looking to adjust the speed on the turntable Paul? Many thanks in advance Andy H
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 4 года назад
Wow. 33.75 is a hair higher than what I would want it to be. If it was 33.4 or 33.5, I wouldn't bother much. The first thing I would try is to get a new belt to see if it makes a difference at all. If a new belt doesn't help, you may need to open up the motor housing and see if you can't pull the motor and pulley back a smidge.
@snakebite69
@snakebite69 4 года назад
Paul, Thanks for the reply. I will buy a new belt first and retry. The psu power supply has functions on the back to adjust the turntable speed, but the instructions dont tell you what tool to use to do this ie if its a small screwdriver. If the belt change doesnt rectify the issue i will ring my local hifi store for advise. Thanks Andy H

+BarakaPDub BTW I have used the app from Feickert. As I didn't trust my android phone with the rpm app. The Feickert app works with a test signal of 3150Hz or 1000Hz. Luckily I had picked up an old test record with those signals on it. With 1000Hz it worked, the 3150Hz gave a miss reading. Have you seen this app? It shows also wow and flutter. /Paul

Here's a question that for the life of me I can't figure out in my head. On a belt drive TT, does belt stretch lead to slower speeds? Or to put it another way, if my TT is running a little slow and I replace the old belt (which I know is a little stretched) with a new one, will the platter be spinning closer to 33.3RPM?
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 7 лет назад
Hello Andrew, great questions. Over time, the belts will stretch a bit and lead to lower speeds. A new belt, should be more taught, in theory. There is some randomness in manufacturing so you might end up with one that randomly might not be that taught. For the most part though, a new belt should get you closer to 33.3 RPM. Are you running an older belt now?
@Pamberjack_
@Pamberjack_ 7 лет назад
BarakaPDub Yes. It's REALLY old. I actually watched yr video where you were swapping belts yr TT and I guess it answered my question. I have ordered a new belt and I'll check the speed between old and new. Pretty sure it will fix my speed problem (-2.55% according to my iPhone) cheers!

I did the test several times, and with the phone placed on the weight in the middle I got a near correct result ; 33.33 rpm (min 33.30 / max 33.36 ) Wow 2sigma ± 0.07% - test on a Mofi Studiodeck with MoFi Super HeavyWeight. But as said the results are always slightly different when done again.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 5 лет назад
Not bad for a Studiodeck and I think they're built better than the Rega's. To really do this right, you would want to do a number of tests and fit the results to a statistical bell curve but honestly, I think I would bore people if I did that.

+smfcpthowdy For what it's worth, the turntabulator app will work great even if you put it on the platter and for $2.99, it's a cheap investment if you want to kill some curiosity. That said, if you like the music the way it is, I would say skip it ;) I am always seeking out getting the best sound out of my system so I like to tinker.

Doesn't your cellphone create extra weight, thus making the results inaccurate?

You could say that it might add to the drag but not that much once the centripetal force kicks in.

just what RPM app are you using, while testing strobe disc what was the strobe source
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
+Richard Golden-DeWitt So I have used a total of three apps. The ones featured in the video are iRPM which is no longer available and the Turntabulator which uses an average over time. The strobe source is an incandescent light bulb which flickers naturally at 60Hz due to the AC circuit.

The accuracy of the strobe disk depends on the accuracy of the line frequency you're getting where you live. I don't think that frequency is as accurate as you think. The clocks on most consumer electronics will be so good that I do not think this is an issue with your phone. Consider this for example: leapsecond.com/pages/mains/

It's definitely a fair point about the line frequency playing to the results. Thanks for sharing the link.

Hi Paul: May I ask two jazz questions please? I'd appreciate your know-how, awareness and honesty... First, I picked up the new John Coltrane "A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters" 3 LP set. The Steve Hoffman forums are littered with misinformation and speculation on this release... Typical speculation from those who don't want to spend the money again.... In the accompanying booklet it says "This edition was mastered by Kevin Reeves at 4th Floor Studios, NYC. Is this a bad thing? A good thing? Sourced from analogue? Sources from a prior master? Also, I also found this used record I had never heard of called "The Giants of Jazz". It's live in London. Features "A Night in Tunisia" Live in London (and other tracks) played by art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespe, Thelonious Monk, etc. Ever heard of it? Of any value? Found it used today in great shape and it is made in sturdy packaging... Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

+Steven Cacciaroni Hello Steven! So your version of A Love Supreme is on my want list. I haven't acquired that one yet and I am really, really curious to hear it. Kevin Reeves now works for Sterling Labs and is a veteran of cutting Coltrane's stuff. He did the mastering of the Offering, Temple University live disc. I personally, don't have anything he has cut. I would be curious to see how it stacks up against other pressings and when I can get my hands on a copy, I might do a compare with a the Analog Productions copy in a video. I heard a rumor that many of the Impulse tapes were lost when the Universal Vaults caught on fire but now I am bit suspect that any of the Impulse titles were lost.The Giants of Jazz, yes, I have heard of that one. It's a common record but sadly something that I am kicking myself for passing up a couple of years back for other records. I also ran into it at a record show but at the time I was short on funds and didn't want to trade for a couple of Blue Notes I had found. I think it documents one of few remaining performances by Monk before he quit playing altogether in the early seventies. Personally, I would grab it and if I see it again because it has so many greats on it. The next time I am not going to let it pass by. That said, some of these ad hoc giants of Jazz records can make for a poor mix. Miles Davis put together a small group called the Modern Jazz Giants which included Monk on Prestige and it didn't work out that well. It's very interesting to hear Monk just totally get lost to the point were he stops playing midway through a song.

Nice video but I am quite sure you did it the wrong way when you used turntabulator to measure rpm with and without drag force. You need to reset the app between the measurements. Once it has done its measurement the app is stuck at the measured speed and it won't detect any changes after you put the stylus on the record. The difference in speed should be approximately 0.05 rpm. Try to use RPM app for iPhone (itunes.apple.com/us/app/rpm-the-turntable-tester/id1030889902?mt=8) instead. It will give you real time speed during the measurement.
