ANOTHER WORLD: Frankie Dies (Stalker Storyline) Pt. 4
The firing of AW alumni Alice Barrett was a sad and devastating blow to the fans of "Another World" for it set in motion the decision to kill off the character that she had portrayed for seven years: the beloved Frankie Frame.
Though brilliantly performed, the storyline is infamous for the controversy it sparked among the show's fans and the soap's executives as well as for the grisly violent way in which the character was murdered. The show never recovered from the loss of Frankie who, in many ways, represented the heart of the show.
In Part 4, Frankie bravely confronts the stalker and he momentarily blinds her with his flashlight, giving him enough time to get the upper hand. He grabs the gun from her and she fights him off, kneeing him in the groin area. She then grabs a tire iron and fends him off, after which he throws her to the ground, pounding her in the face. She manages to get him off of her and runs into the woods, screaming for help.
Rachel is outside with Matthew talking about Maggie's wedding to Nick (hurl!) when she thinks she hears someone yelling. Matthew convinces Rachel it's an old dog named Adelaide, not knowing it's actually Frankie.
Felicia fills Morgan in on Frankie's disappearance and Joe learns someone matching Frankie's description was found dead at the docks. He informs Cass by phone that the body is not Frankie's. When Cass asks if Joe's heard anything about Frankie, he tells Cass it's as if she's disappeared.
Frankie, in the meantime, attempts to find safety in the old Cory icehouse. She attempts to leave through the window but it's sealed shut. The stalker catches up to her and blocks her from leaving. She sobbingly declares she knows he is about to kill her and angrily charges at him, unmasking him in the process. She recognizes him and asks him why he's killing. She tells him he needs help and pleads with him to spare her life for the sake of her child. He then strangles her.
Rachel and Matthew are about to go in to avoid the impending thunderstorm when Rachel thinks to check the icehouse for garden tools since it's due to be torn down. Matthew tells her to put it off until after the storm.
Cass, overcome with frustration at knowing that Frankie is in danger and feeling totally helpless to do anything about it, leaves the house to go search for her.
The stalker leaves Frankie for dead in the icehouse with his necklace in hand. Frankie, the life draining out of her, grabs a rock and attempts to carve out a letter to reveal the identity of her murderer. She almost succeeds but dies before finishing. As she draws her last breath, Cass simultaneously cries out her name.
