Of course! I wanted to do one on my 2nd year but as you saw each semester is quite different so its hard to say what a typical day looks like when they are all so different.

Is it common for 2nd year students to get publications from their research?

From the pharm project? It's definitely not common. Everyone sort of tries but it depends on quite a lot of factors like what type of project you're doing, if the research is actually novel and publishable, if your PI is interest in publishing, if you get grants to pay for submission, if you have time lol, etc. You might end up on a project where its quite easy to get it published while one of your classmates might give their 110% to a project and still not end up published. From extracurricular research, yes definietely. It's very time consuming and quite hard but you have way greater chances of being published since you can choose the project/PI you're working with.
