Hi everyone, my name is Ovi, and welcome to Ovi.Med!
I'm a 4th year medical student at the University of Dublin (Trinity College Dublin) and I'm from Quebec, Canada. I create videos with the intention to share my experiences, progress, and challenges through Medical School. My goal is to make informative videos to give an insight to viewers around the world on what it's like to study medicine at TCD as an international student. Also, I hope to break common misconceptions and myths about med school and give it to you straight so that you know what you're getting into. I also hope to increase awareness about the need for more health care staff and convince people to pursue health care careers!

Hi Ovi, im freakishly checking how this is as i just randomly booked a room in the E block. Do you know what block you were in? How was the rest of your stay at this residence?
Don't - Go To visit Book of Kells!! I had the most outrage treatment at the gift shop of the Book of Kells exhibition at the Trinity College - with my family including two 5 & 6 year old children. Because there was no public bathroom at the exhibition building, their father had to use it at another building. While I waited with the children at the shop, a male staff wanted us to leave even though we bought their merchandises. I explained the situation and pled with him to let us stay because the shop was our meeting place and their father's US phone did not work in Ireland. He replied "I gave you 5 minutes. Leave." I was so shocked and speechless at his rudeness and callousness. We were their customers, we had two children just waiting for someone to return from the bathroom, and it was pouring rain outside. Seriously, this guy didn't care about the customers, or children. He wanted to kick us out in the rain outside! Fortunately their father returned shortly. But this will always be my bad memory of Ireland. I do not recommend Book of Kells and the Trinity college for any visitors - based on my experience, I think it is overrated. People should know about it!! BTW, most shelves in the library are empty. There are only two pages of the book that you get to see at the exhibition.
Sorry to hear about your experience. As a student I've been about 5 times and it's always been a pleasure. I think they might be doing some conservation/renovation works at the library at the moment. I would suggest getting in touch with the staff to let them know about your experience.
@@ovimed How long ago was that? The culture certainly has changed. The staff told me that his manager told him to request us to leave. They just don't care about the customers. They know that they can treat their customers horribly without any consequence. I had much better and more professional customer service at the Guinness Storehouse. I think that the management of the shop and maybe the college should be replaced and led by the professionals from the Guinness Storehouse. Huh?
Hey this is awesome content! I’m also looking to apply to TCD as an EU student and was wondering what I would need to do in order to apply? Thanks a lot for this content!
Really useful info in this vid. Apart from observing, were you allowed to do any clinical skills such as taking blood, cannulas, catheter insertion etc?
Glad you enjoyed it! No, not when you're observing. You do that if you're on placement in medical school and have the authorisation to do so, otherwise you absolutely can't do any clinical action on patients.
As I said in the video, it is to a certain extent. However, it all depends on your roomates, you can hear them speaking on the phone if they're really loud. The walls are not the thickest.
Thanks for your video. I'm an author here in the U.S. and doing research on the old library that will be the main setting for a fantasy book I'm working on. Thanks again and good luck in your studies!
The window issue is a funny one, its a building regulation to stop suicides from a window. Its basically covering their own backs so they don't get blamed for any suicides, and get bad PR for their company...... Inconvenient and also it feels weird having autonomy taken away!
Of course! I wanted to do one on my 2nd year but as you saw each semester is quite different so its hard to say what a typical day looks like when they are all so different.
Someone who can guarantee that you can pay. Often like a parent or someone who lives in Ireland that you can list as a 'backup' and if for some reason you don't pay well the residency will go and ask them the money.
@@ovimed understood. Something similar to a sponsor. However is it necessary for the guarantor to be from or in Ireland? Also thank you for the quick and prompt response. If only the student accommodation reps were as quick😓🥲
@@StonedNoob I'm not sure if they have to be from Ireland, I guess it depends on the residence. Some residences don't even ask for one so you'll have to check with them... when they answer haha
@@ovimed haha yes I shall do that. Thank you for the info! Btw I’ve been reading up a lot and it seems Dublin has become quite dangerous (or maybe it’s the exaggeration of the internet/ subReddit). But I heard O’Connell street isn’t safe. And your accommodation was like quite near it. Did you ever face any incidents or felt unsafe? I’ll be staying at Beckett House which is right opposite K. Court
Hello Doctor. Your video is really informative. I am an MBBS graduate from Nepal. I am taking USMLE exams. Could you please tell me how can I do postgraduate in medicine (internal medicine or pediatric or family medicine or GP) using my USMLE scores. In addition, can u please provide which websites will have authentic informations about it. Thank you very much!!
Hi Ovi, thanks for the review of Scape Dublin. My son is going to Trinity this September and has a place at Scape, Dublin. As a new undergraduate I want him to meet other new students. From your experience does Scape have many new students or are they older and already have friendship groups? Would you therefore recommend for a new undergrad who wants to meet people or is there another place that would be better (he didn't get a place at Trinity Halls). Thanks
From the pharm project? It's definitely not common. Everyone sort of tries but it depends on quite a lot of factors like what type of project you're doing, if the research is actually novel and publishable, if your PI is interest in publishing, if you get grants to pay for submission, if you have time lol, etc. You might end up on a project where its quite easy to get it published while one of your classmates might give their 110% to a project and still not end up published. From extracurricular research, yes definietely. It's very time consuming and quite hard but you have way greater chances of being published since you can choose the project/PI you're working with.
Hi... So I was wondering. What's the exact difference between college and med school? I'm going to be done with high school this year and have a great passion to study medicine... Does it mean I can't enter med sch direct? I'm a lil bit confused
college/university/med school is all the same - university level studies. For entry it depends on your country, in the USA and Canada you need a university undergraduate degree to be able to apply to medicine.
Hello, I am pleasantly surprised. I love that Old Library. I would love to visit that library someday. I am always rushing when I travel to Dublin and I never have enough time. I am surprised to receive this video. Thanks for sharing.
do international medical students in Ireland get equal opportunities for research or is it less than Irish students? and how competitive or difficult it is to find a research internship or project there as an international student?
I don't think there is any discrimination. The only difference might be in obtaining research grants since some are only available for Irish/EU students. However, I didn't really look into it that much since I'm doing research here in Canada.
