Answering your ASSUMPTIONS about FAMILY MEDICINE 

I am an Ob/Gyn and would encourage anyone not to go into any specialty for the money. Also, do not compare your salary, specialty, or job to others. You decide what kind of career you want and shouldn't compare to others. My family is more important to me than my salary or even my job/career. Also, as your life changes your priorities will change. Before I got married and had a baby, I had different priorities. Now my family is the most important. I do not want to live back on my life with regrets or what if because I was chasing money or my career.

Having just matched into Emergency Medicine residency just last month..I will say there is NO EASY SPECIALTY...being a doctor in any capacity is a privilege that takes tremendous sacrifice and perseverance..if you make it into a specialty you love..you have won! Lastly...being a licensed/board certified physician ...you can literally make as much money as your heart desires independent of specialty...work 2 jobs, work locum, consulting, adjunct professor, etc...its just about what youre willing to sacrifice...so in essence dont let anyone or anything chose the life you want..you only get one.

Thank you for this video! When I had chosen family medicine for residency I felt like I had to justify my choice to other people. Family medicine is so amazing. I like the fact that I can have continuity of care with a diverse patient population and not restrict my knowledge to certain organ system. Also, if you end up wanting to concentrate in a certain area of family medicine there are so many fellowships out there.

Everyone tells me FM usually ends up being a few basic cases and gets boring, which sometimes makes me apprehensive about going into it. Still planning on it though ;)

Thank you for helping me decide on FM. There is a lot of stigma on going into FM and I had hesitations before this video for those specific reasons. I am now more settled that this is the right career path for me as an MD.

You are doing a good thing. I have a Fm but he also delivers babies.he does it all but he doesn't do like heart surgery. c secs yes but heart surg no. He was top 5 in his school and he's very smart. He chose to go into it because he knew that is where he could be his best. I think some of the best doctors go into FM because you have so many different ppl coming in for dif things and that would make it more interesting!

I am doing Training in General practice in UK, I think it's similar to family medicine in US. I have finished my hospital posting and now working in GP surgery and I love it. The variety and trust the patients have in you is the most rewarding compared to hospital medicine. Loved the video and answering the assumptions.

Really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. I'm a mom of two, and I prefer the pace of fam med. Before family and marraige I would've been in ER if I had chance but each specialty is as valuable as the next. All the best in residency.

As an RN, I worked for a family medicine doctor for a year. It was very interesting and I learned so much. The patients really appreciated having a great dr to trust their family care to. Our patients became family.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I had learned a lot of these same misconceptions from so many people. I’m currently in the fifth week of my core and have fallen in love with the specialty especially after learning all of the possibilities moving forward. I’ve definitely found my niche. Thank you for your video! I came from a family with doctors (10+ specialties ) that includes from Plastic Surgery to Internal Medicine, but among all, I like Family Medicine and Internal Medicine because these branches are so broad and covers almost everything.🙂

Yay! Was waiting for this video! I’m starting medical school in July and believe in OMT and want to be a family Medicine physician! So grateful to have you to look up to.

I’ve commented before, but i wanted to again because I LOVE our family care practitioner. She takes care of my 18 month old, myself, and will also care for my newborn when he makes his arrival in July. I have hypothyroidism and she manages that better than my endocrinologist did because she looks at the whole picture of my health. She has taken such good care of my son in his first year and a half of life and never made me feel like i was being a crazy first time mom. It was also super helpful during my son’s first few months of life to see her so often for my son’s check ups, but she also checked in with me to see how I was doing not only physically but mentally! I 100 percent would tell anyone who is hesitant to go check out a family care provider!! Family care providers are angels on earth and I so appreciate what you guys do!

My boyfriend had a 248 and chose family medicine and got sooooo much crap for it. His own school told him that he was “wasting his talents” and everyone telling him how anybody who dreams of going into a competitive, high paying speciality would kill for that score. And tbh I’m a bit guilty of having that misperception subconsciously too. However, starting medical school myself, I truly see why he loves it so much, it is literally the best specialty imo, and I wish people didn’t have such negative preconceptions of it before their rotations. I’ve seen several people at my school, even those who want to pursue highly competitive specialities, absolutely love their FM rotations more than anything, but care too much about what other people think, and it kinda breaks my heart. Like you said, there are those that are amazing at the clinical side of things, kill it in the classroom, love FM, but have always been bad at standardized tests, so there’s always two sides of the spectrum. I definitely appreciate you discussing this ❤️

I will never understand why Family Medicine gets a bad rep. In a specialty you learn it and things become repetitive. Family Medicine, you never know what is walking into the door. The smallest “clue” can equal a huge illness.

Hi Jenny, I know this Doctor who runs 2 Family Practice clinics and is also Board Certified in Palliative Care(1 year Fellowship). He is also the Hospice Director. Let me tell you, he makes a lot more than $600,000.00/year. I know because he's my Buddy:) As you said, all depends on how much you want to work. I am happy for you. Love the information you generously provide for us. The only concern i have about pursuing FM is the evolving other health professions such as NP and PA. What is your take on the future of FM in regards to competing with NPs and PAs? Some states, NPs can own and operate their own primary care practice and bill under their own number.

I’m in medical school right now, but I have much experience as a paramedic then a flight/ critical care paramedic. I’m in a US MD program and am truly considering family medicine for the reasons she listed. I don’t see family medicine as a “non-elite” field. I’ve shadowed many FM physicians and it is not a boring specialty at all. I appreciate family medicine and the physicians who chose it. Some people chose FM even with amazing board scores because it is an amazing specialty. Congratulations on your FM residency it is an amazing decision. You’re going to change a lot of lives!

I find the referrals assumption funny because in my 22 years my primary care doctor never referred me out unless it was for eye care so I needed to see a Optometrist. I actually had to find my own Psychiatrist and OBGYN because I didn't feel like my PCP was in depth enough. I think a good PCP should know their limits and know when to refer out!

I’m planning on starting in family medicine once I graduate in August 2020 from PA school. I want to go into other specialties later (specifically GI) but doing family medicine first will give me a great background to start off with and to learn about all different types of things.

I was assigned by by insurance provider to a doctor who’s a DO. In an effort to better understand her background, I recently went and educated myself on the distinction between a DO and an MD. Although, there have been some hiccups in our doctor-patient relationship, I haven’t given up on her yet. For instance, she played a part in me having abstained from alcohol for the past two years. So that’s a pretty significant win. A previous doctor made a subtle suggestion that consuming alcohol was working to aggravate certain conditions, but I didn’t latch onto it. And until this video, I didn’t know that OMT was an actual practice unto itself. As a man, it’s oftentimes awkward having a female GP, but there are pluses too. Sometimes it really tests me as a man to stay on board. It requires quite a bit of introspection to process some of the feelings that we’ll up. Keep going though. Some of us male patients might be difficult in the beginning. But over time, you can potentially win some of us over.

Hi Jenny, I always enjoy your videos and thank you so much for what you’ve shared with us. I was wondering if you see PAs/NPs “threatening” the field of FM? Or any other field? Do you feel that they will “take” the jobs of physicians, and that the health care arena is shifting toward an mid-level provider model? I am a D.O. student and secure in my goals, but I keep hearing things like the above from currently practicing physicians. Thank you for your perspective. My daughter just matched into FM and she finds out tomorrow where! Her partner who is one year below her in med school is planning to go into FM and specialize in sports medicine. His dad is an ortho surgeon and and very supportive of his son’s choice of FM.

I think you are going to be a great Family Physician. I had a great Family Physician until she moved out of state. Since then I am on my second one. The first left the practice I go to, the one I am going to now is not great. She refers for everything! I sometimes question her knowledge since she doesn’t handle much. I wish I could find another great Family Doctor. Our Family Doctor that moved knew our family. She was invested in us as patients. This one keeps asking the same questions over and over about us even after three + years seeing her. I don’t know if she is disinterested or just overwhelmed. If you end up practicing in our area in Western Washington I would move our family to you in an instant.

Speak for yourself, colleague! My family residency actually has a good lifestyle. Multiple electives built in and most weeks are between 45 to 65 hours. Yes, be jealous! Har Har!

Board score is just a number, I guess what matters is that how you care about your patients, how much time u give, how you reassurance them, how compassionate and empathic you are as a physician

Thanks for the informative video! Do you have formal OMT didactics incorporated in your residency training, mentors who are proficient in it and can guide you to improve your manipulation, or is it the resident's volition that determines the amount of OMT performed on patients? I'm looking at different FM residencies and would prefer one that has strong OMT instruction but wondering if my manipulation skills will wane if I don't have faculty that do it regularly.

Board scores are like MCAT scores. Higher scores get you into more competitive places but your overall profile is looked at to get accepted. Scores don’t mean anything. It just indicates your performance on randomly generated standardized questions. It doesn’t signify your overall performance in real world Medicine where you don’t have a the answer choices in front of you

Wow!! That's crazy! You know in Israel, only a surgeon /er doctor will suture an injury. And an IUD will be inserted only by an obgyn doctor. I find it very interesting that family Medicine is so diverse in the USA. I'm a med student at my last year and studying for finals currently. So you were my break during breakfast and I really like your videos! Thank you!!!!!!!

How much time you have left in residency? Also, I agree with you that family medicine doctors still make a lot of money. Even if the pay is in the 100s for some, that is still enough money to live comfortably! It is still more money than what most of the population makes. I don’t get why people think that they “need” to make over $300,000 a year. As someone who has lived in poverty pretty much all her life, I can tell you that I can live more than comfortably with anything over $100,000, specially if my income is not the only one in the house.

How did you get trained in injections or the obgyn stuff? Is that just part of the fam med training?

I think it’s mostly people not in medicine and those “aspiring” to medicine that contribute to the negative assumptions. No physicians speak poorly of family docs, because fam docs LITERALLY do everything and know a bit from every specialty. Family docs make the world of medicine go round. They are the gateway to patients getting all other specialized care.

I would just like to ask, when will I start earning money as an aspiring doctor? Do we have salary while under residency training?

If the board scores for family medicine residency we’re high like neurosurgery or plastics we probably wouldn’t have a lot of family medicine doctors today. We need primary care providers and if we had a higher board score requirement a lot people probably would get into to family medicine because of it being a hypothetically competitive speciality. It’s not a bad thing that they accept lower board scores because everyone doesnt perform well on standardized test any way. Performing well on these test doesn’t make you less smart then the next doctor. It’s so much more involved in being a physician then one or two test. I am only a premed and I realize that now.
